Burlington Mixed 3 Pitch Rules 2012
Burlington Mixed Industrial 3 Pitch
2012 Rules
This league follows standard baseball rules. The rules listed below are special rules for our league, in no particular order. These rules apply to all regular season and tournament games, except where explicitly noted.
1. Three pitches only. Pitcher pitches to own team.
2. During regular season, games start at 6:30 p.m. and last nine innings or until dusk.
3. Defensive team must have a minimum of 3 girls on the playing field. If a team is one girl short, they must play without a rover.
4. Every player must be listed in the batting order. There must not be more than 2 males batting consecutively. If you do not have enough girls to place through your batting order, the girls will need to rotate through the spots, so that no more than 2 males bat in a row.
5. No bunting is allowed. Ball does not have to go past pitcher as long as a full swing is made. Batter will be called out if umpire judges that a bunt attempt was made.
6. No stealing or leading off before batter makes contact with the ball.
7. No sliding.
8. Batting team must supply base umpires at 1st and 3rd base during regular season. 1st base umpire is responsible for the calls at home plate and 1st base, in the event of an appeal the 3rd base umpire is responsible for the call. The 3rd base umpire is responsible for calling the plays at 2nd and 3rd base. Please ensure that umpires for each base are capable of making calls in a positive and decisive manner.
9. Umpires will be supplied for the final tournament. When there is an umpire present, ONLY the umpire makes the calls at the bases. Their call is final.
10. In the final tournament, umpires reserve the right to eject any abusive player(s) from a game. Tournament organizers or league conveners may also eject player(s) from a tournament for un-sportsman like conduct.
11. A batted ball, which hits a pitcher, is a strike.
12. Pop-up behind home plate is only an out if caught after reaching a height higher than the backstop.
13. Maximum of 5 runs per inning, except for final two innings. **During tournament play last inning is open unrestricted for runs. (Will be called by umpire)
14. Outfielders, including rover, are not allowed on infield until ball is hit. Home teams to adjust this rule at diamonds where the infield is very large.
15. Infielders are not allowed to step closer than the base lines until the ball is hit.
16. The catcher must make any plays at home. If the catcher needs help because of a hard throw any fielder may make the catch and toss the ball to the catcher to make the play.
17. A “commitment line” will be placed across the 3rd base line, 15 feet from home plate. Once a runner crosses this line, he/she must continue towards home.
18. The 1st base line will be extended through home plate to the home plate. This will be done to avoid collisions at home plate. The runner need only cross this line before the ball reaches the catcher to be safe. If the runner touches home plate under any circumstances, he/she is out.
19. During regular season, catcher is responsible for calling foul balls. Catcher should move up to stand on home plate to make the call. Catcher needs to shout so that all players can hear the call.
20. Catcher need not touch the runner for the out at home – the runner is out if the catcher has their foot on home plate before the runner crosses the line. The catcher may still tag the runner if necessary due to being out of position on the play.
21. Substitute runner must be the last person out of the same gender as the injured player. Team using substitute must announce to opposing team their intention to use a runner. Batter must be safe at 1st base before a runner can be substituted.
22. If you are playing in the field you must be in the batting order and vice versa.
23. Runner takes free base if he/she accidentally collides with a player who is NOT involved in the play. Note that the runner will be called out in cases where a collision occurs while a fielding player is trying to make a play for the ball.
24. There must be a safety bag at first base, with the orange bag on the outside and the white towards the infield. Runner is out of play and cannot be tagged out if the touch the outside bag. Runner is still in play if they touch the inside bag when crossing 1st.
25. There should be 60 feet between all bases.
26. At diamonds where there is a fence, any ball which either rolls under the outfield fence or bounces over the fence without ever being touched by a fielding player is a ground rule double (all players advance 2 bases).
27. Any other ground rules will depend on weather and other last-minute annoyances and will be discussed among coaches and umpires prior to the game.
28. Infield fly rule: If an infield fly ball that can be caught with ordinary effort by an infielder in fair territory is hit with less than 2 out and runners on 1st and 2nd base or bases loaded, the batter is automatically out and the runners stay on their bases (must be called by an umpire at time of play).
29. Home team must supply a new Yellow "Gold Dot" ball per game. If home team does not supply a new ball they forfeit “home team” for that game.
30. Both teams must have a copy of the permits and rules at the diamond.
31. Dead ball rule: If a fly ball is caught behind a player’s bench this is a dead ball. Ball must pass players bench to be in play.
32. Once last batter on batting order has hit, no other players can join in. In some circumstances in regular season games, this rule may be “bent” as long as the two team captains have discussed and agreed upon prior to game start.
33. No metal cleats allowed in this league.
34. In the event of inclement weather, 5 completed innings constitutes a game.
35. Games will be played a full nine innings. If the game is tied, it will remain a tie.
36. Winning team is responsible for reporting the score. Please email or call in your score by end of the day following the game, or score will be entered as a 1-1 tie.
37. All teams are responsible for checking the website to ensure that your scores have been accurately recorded. Please do this on a regular basis; we don’t want to have to make all the changes in the last week of the regular season.
38. Home team has the final decision on whether a game is being played or not. If opposite team does not want to play when game is called on, game will then be forfeited.
39. If a player, who has called for a pinch runner in a previous inning, hits a home run, that player may round the bases and will receive his home run.
40. Rosters must be submitted at the beginning of the season and will be reviewed prior to playoffs.
41. Players playing in tournament must play a minimum of 50% of the season games.
42. As stated in Rule 2, all games start at 6:30 pm. In the event that a team is short players there will be a 10 minute grace period for players to arrive. At 6:40 you must be able to field a team or forfeit the game. If you have players arriving after the game has started, they are permitted to play, but their names must be added to the bottom of the order. As stated in Rule 4, no more than 2 guys can bat consecutively, so you may need to rotate your girls into the bottom part of the order depending on players added.
43. Masks to protect the pitcher may be worn, or protective pitching screens may be used. When playing with a pitching screen any ball that hits the screen will be a dead ball (strike)
All players must know and understand the rules before playing. If anyone is unclear on any of the rules, please contact convener for clarification.
