Bull Bay, Boys' Town in control
Boys' Town and Bull Bay grabbed the advantage after the first leg of the JNBS/Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Super League semi-finals at the Harbour View mini-stadium on Saturday.
Boys' Town edged rivals Santos 3-2 in the first match while Bull Bay were 3-1 winners over the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF).
Captain Fitzroy Anglin (13th), Oneil Thompson (38th) and Michael Campbell (67th) scored for Boys' Town and Gregory Consingh (34th) and Raymond Smith (70th) scored for Santos.
In the other semi-final, Asa McIntosh (9th and 78th) and Jermaine Taylor (36th) got Bull Bay's goals with Terrence Jarrett netting JDF's consolation goal.
In the opening semi-final, Boys' Town received an early break after just 12 minutes when Smith blatantly handled the ball inside the area and Anglin rammed home the resulting spot-kick to put the Andrew Price-coached side ahead.
But Santos stormed back and got the equaliser when goalkeeper Marlon Mundy failed to hold Smith's free kick and Consingh latched on to stab home the rebound.
However the lead was short-lived as four minutes later, Thompson expertly dismissed a defender on top of the area and released a low left-footed drive that eluded the outstretched hands of Devon Haughton in the Santos goal.
Boys' Town started the better team in the second half and they increased the lead 22 minutes into the half, through Campbell's unstoppable 25-yard drive that left Haughton a mere spectator.
But Santos threw themselves a lifeline as Smith pulled back a goal three minutes later, after Herbert Allen nodded a ball back across the face of the goal for the midfielder to head home from point-blank range.
Winning coach Andrew Price said the margin of victory could be wider had they made better use of their chances.
"We got a lot of chances; we should have converted but we didn't and we gave up two soft goals," he said.
Santos' coach Carlton Dennis said his team was 'hard done' by the referee, however, he thought Boys' Town got the better of a keenly contested match.
"Boys Town came hard, we came hard, but they got the better of the draw. But this continues. We have 90 minutes more of football and it can go either way," he said.
In the second game, Bull Bay, like Boys' Town, took an early lead from the penalty spot, courtesy of top striker Asa McIntosh.
But 11 minutes later, the Soldiers found an equaliser when Jarrett beat Andrew Land with a well-taken shot from the top of the area.
Bull Bay restored their lead when Taylor was allowed to control the ball unmarked inside the area and shot past the hapless Luke Davis in goal.
Twelve minutes into the second half, JDF were reduced to 10 men when Michael Watted was expelled for a two-footed challenge on Taylor.
McIntosh should have added to Bull Bay's tally in the 75th minute but he skied a second penalty after substitute Milton Griffiths was brought down inside the area two minutes after coming on.
However, the striker soon made amends when Griffiths raced clear of the Soldiers' defence only to see his chip over Davis rebound off the bar, but McIntosh picked up the loose ball and slammed home from close range.
Bull Bay's coach Barrington Gaynor, who was ordered to leave the touchline by referee Peter Prendergast, is confident his team's two-goal advantage is enough to carry them through to the final.
"We are the best defensive team," he noted.
His counterpart Alverie Legister believes his team will bounce back.
"We proved that we can get behind the Bull Bay defence. Next time we just need to put away our chances," he said.
