BULL Bay stunned defending champions Meadhaven United 1-0 to earn their first hold on the Blue Cross of Jamaica/Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Under-17 title at the Barbican Football Field yesterday.
Ranique Muir scored the all-important goal nine minutes in the first stanza of extra time (89th), after it ended 0-0 in regulation time, which lasted 80 minutes. It was third time lucky for Bull Bay, having lost in two previous finals.
Coach Owen Wright was overjoyed about winning his and the team's first championship trophy. "We met them (Meadhaven) out by Bull Bay in the quarter-final and outplayed them... (but) they got three chances and we were upset about it, so we went back to the drawing board and did what we had to do and made sure we didn't give away any easy chances today (yesterday), and they had to be kicking shots from way-out," said coach Wright.
He also had high praises for his players, who followed instructions for the most part. "They stuck to the game plan... at one point I felt that we were going down, but the guys told me not to worry because they were going to give me my first trophy," added Wright, who was soaking wet having been showered with water by the players.
Meadhaven United controlled the game for most of the second half in regulation and extra time, but failed to drive home their advantage.
This did not sit well with their coach David Hunt, who while disappointed, was humble in defeat. "It was a tough game... (but) congratulations to Bull Bay," Hunt said tersely.
Asked what went wrong for his team, Hunt, who is also the National Under-17 coach, replied: "We made a simple mistake and they capitalised on it, congratulations to them."
Goal-scorer Muir pounced on a loose ball, which was suprisingly not controlled by the usually efficient Meadhaven captain Robert Plummer, before dribbling into the 18-yard box to beat Oniel Wilson between the sticks. Bull Bay then defended stoutly to hold on for their first KSAFA Under-17 title.
Teams: Bull Bay - Keithy Simpson, Odane Wilson, Miguel Stewart, Adrian Harrison, Andre Aikins, Romario Wright, Andre Beckford (Ricardo Jackson 70th), Ranique Muir, Andrew Whon (Rohan Blackwood 50th), Marlon Henry, Earl Bennett.

August Town, Meadhaven battle down to the wire
August Town could secure the Jamaica National /KSAFA/Super League should they take maximum points against Greenwich Town at UWI Bowl this afternoon starting at 3:30 pm.
However, second-placed Meadhaven, who trail by a point, will hope the front-runners drop points, while they score a victory against Maverley/Hughenden at Maverley Park to claim the championship and a spot in the National Premeir League (NPL) play-offs.
In other games, Santos travel to Bull Pen to play Bull Bay, the JDF tackle Barbican at Up Park Camp, Mountain View oppose Shortwood at Excelsior High School and Police Nationals take on Rae Town at Breezy Castle.
All games start at 3:30 pm.
August Town lead the table with 39 points. Santos are third with 34 points, followed by the JDF with 33, Police Nationals with 32.

Super League feature
Leaders Meadhaven will look to stay atop of the Jamaica National KSAFA Super League points standings when they tackle bottom-of-the-table Shortwood United at Shortwood Teachers' College this afternoon at 3:30.
However, the feature match of the round will be at Bell/Chung Oval where second-placed Santos play joint-third Maverley/Hughenden.
In other games, Bull Bay entertain August Town at Bull Pen, the JDF host Police Nationals at Up Park Camp, Mountain View oppose Greenwich Town at Excelsior High School and Barbican meet Rae Town at Barbican field.
Santos have 22 points, they trail Meadhaven by two, while Maverley are tied on 21 points with Police and August Town.
A win would be an ideal result for either team, while a loss would open the door for the JDF (17 points) to come closer, but the army men must first defeat Police National.
August Town will start favourites against Bull Bay, but the latter must not be taken lightly.
