There have been some great Nevada state champions this decade – Shanna Sparks, Collier Lawrence, Mel Lawrence, Kelsey Smith, to name a few – but one Buffalo Babe is poised to join that list. It just might be a question of how soon. It’s pretty awesome to have someone with the talent and potential of Shelby McIntyre of South Tahoe HS on the Buffalo Babes list of runners for Foot Locker, and hopefully for many meets to come.
Only in high school for about a month now, Shelby has gotten out of the gate as fast as anyone could imagine. At the Reno twilight meet she was second only to Nevada state champion and fellow teammate Kelsey Smith. (Kelsey has run for the Buffalo Babes three times already and is a part of two US Cross Country team titles and a Junior Olympic team title for the Babes.) If that result wasn’t impressive enough, we had to do a double-take looking at the results from September 13th.
Shelby competed in the Seaside Invitational in Ventura and raced against freshman in a grade-by-grade format. She took 2nd place with a time of 17:45 for 3 miles which is just phenomenal. But upon further review, in a meet that featured the Saugus girls and several other tough teams, Shelby’s 17:45 was the sixth fastest of the entire meet… and there were about 1000 girls. Good grief.
You might guess she has some experience at this. Representing Tony Willams Track Club, Shelby competed in last year’s Junior Olympics at Rim Rock farm in Kansas. She took 21st and was All-American. Shelby has also been swimming since she was five years old, and has qualified for the Nevada state swim championships in at least one event since she was six years old. This year she has actually qualified for four events. This multi-talented athlete also snowboards competitively. She qualified for the USASA Snowboarding Nationals in Copper Mountain, Colorado last year where she took 6th place in Boardercross and 7th place in Slopestyle. Just to complete the package, Shelby played club soccer for the Tahoe Ice.
Shelby and her South Tahoe ‘mates have a big fall planned with Nevada state championships in early November, Nike Team National regionals in late-November, and maybe Nike Team Nationals in early December. She's got some great teammates (two of whom are Kelsey and Kira Smith) so you never know. Either way, it's going to be fun.
