Beyer High School - Senior - Division 1

HS Coach: Ruben Esparza
One of the new girls for 2007 is already in action representing the Buffalo Babes! Crystal wanted to participate in the J.O. track series and ran the 3000 meters last weekend in Livermore finishing second and if she’s in the Top 3 this weekend in Fresno, she’ll qualify for the national USATF Junior Olympics at Mt. SAC. Crystal has improved every year but her junior year was a huge leap, up to and including the transition from cross to track.
For cross country, Crystal was 3rd in the Modesto conference in 2005 and moved up to 2nd in 2006. She was the 5th place finisher at D1 Sections (#1 individual qualifier) and was the only runner from Beyer HS to make the state meet. Her time at Willow Hill was 20:19…right in there with Lindsey Dubs and Sam Dougherty, so that’s pretty fast company. Since Rebecca Hbtamu moved away, Crystal is the 6th fastest returning XC senior for 2007. At the state meet, Crystal ran 19:44… a 40-second improvement from her time at the Clovis Invitational a month and a half earlier. She also had top tens at Mt Sac (7th in Race 76), 4th at the Sierra Inviational, 3rd at the Lodi Lakes race, and 10th at Subsections. Crystal was honored by making the Modesto Area All-District Team.
For track, Crystal elevated her game to another level. She started with a 5:32 1600 at Buchanon in March and seemingly took 7-10 seconds off that time every other week until she got down to a 5:03.16 at D1 Section finals at Cordova. That time was good for 4th and put her in the thick of things for the 1600 Masters race, where she just missed medaling with a 7th place finish. Considering where she was last year and even where she was in March, Crystal had an awesome track season. She also had a 2:21 800m time but may have gone faster and we just missed it.
Crystal’s father is Ruben who coaches Beyer HS (who has an NCAA title to his credit that you can ask him about!) and her mom is Rosa. Crystal has an athletic sister Amber who runs for the Central Valley Striders and is also on a swim team.
It’s long overdue, but it sure is awesome to have Crystal on the Buffalo Babes. She’s one of the best runners in the section and they’re going to find out all about her in Kansas. She’ll join Merie, Lindsey, Hillary, Kelly McEnerney, and her Beyer teammate Samantha Reardon in that Young Women’s group with 1-2 others.
