SUMMER TRACK RESULTS
2010 TRACK AND FIELD JUNIOR OLYMPICS - SACRAMENTO, CA, JULY 27 TO AUG 1
Official Website - Results Page
Tues July 27 -
Steeplechase - 8th Shayna 7:56.54 12th April 8:23.69
Shayna, 3 sec PR and All-American, April, 4 sec PR. April is ranked 25th in the US, Shayna is 12th.
Wed July 28 - 4x800 Relay - YG - 8th Buffalo Babes 9:59.86, IG - 6th Buffalo Babes 9:59.73
Youth Girls - Renny, Miranda, Anna, Ariel 11 seconds faster than Modesto
Intermediate Girls - Allison, Claire, Kelly, Shayna 32 seconds faster than Modesto. THAT'S how you do it.
Thur July 28 -
800 meters - Fiona - unfortunately Fiona was sick and could not race
Sat July 31 -
3000 meters - 4th Cassidy 10:47.39. Noon start? Seriously?
Not the brightest time to schedule a 3000m race but Cassidy gradually improves from 8th to 4th during the race. plus a strong kick. Highest placing ever for a Buffalo Babes girl or team at the track USATF Jr. Olympics. What a Girl!
Sun Aug 1 -
1500 meters - 4th Fiona 4:53.05. Emotional week ends on high note.
After her off-on-off-again 800 meter episode, Fiona if nothing else was rested for her 1500m. Following a restart after 40 meters, Fiona stayed in a pack of 6, then 5, then 4 and surged from 4th to 3rd before settling back into 4th, just a few meters out of silver medal spot, running great splits and showing every last drop of courage we have come to expect and love out of this little pack of energy. Her time equates to below 5:15 for 1600m,,, and she only just got out of 6th grade. With the track season now closed, Fiona ranks #6 in the US at 1500 meters. (Her 4:53.05 would have ranked #4 in the US in 2009, #4 in 2008, #5 in 2007, and #3 in 2006, according to www.eliteyouth.com.) Fiona would have made All-American in the older IG and YW age groups as well. What a Girl Part II !

SUNDAY NEWS
--Redemption for Fiona -
Fiona impressively took Saturday's results in stride and came out firing and motiviated on Sunday for her 1500m. She nearly pulled off the win. Her time of 4:56.90 virtually matched her time in Santa Rosa vs. much of the same competiton... and what a blessing it is to have so many great runners in NorCal. We live in a talent-rich region and it helps everyone improve. So congratulations to Fiona for being the first Midget Girl to make the track and field JO's in an indvidual event in many years.
--Close call for Ariel, 3 Babes in Top Ten! - With 300 meters to go in her indvidual 1500, Ariel had just moved into third place, but the nearly 3 weeks of missed running due to the sore heel (despite the cross-training) may have been the decider. Ariel ran 4:59.97, breaking the 5-minute barrier (a time which would have been 1st place in the SoCal qualifier) but was a 4th place time today. She still ran great and deserved a berth but it just wasn't to be. Jerriann (5:09.30) and Renny (5:10.58) had good races as well, very good for a first season of running versus the awesome line-up of talent that shows up at the USATF qualifier - especially when the JO's are local. Three of the Top 9 in this Region is something to be proud of girls.

SATURDAY NEWS
--Fiona's Memorable Run goes Unrewarded
- After a bumpy start and some odd seeding, Fiona ran a first lap of approximately 72 seconds. Holding a tenuous spot of 3rd (yet only 5 meters off the lead), Fiona was passed with about 130 meters to go and did her best to hunt the 3 leaders down. She gave everything that little body had and PR'd by almost 3 seconds... 2:24.95... (and that's just out of 6th grade). Unfortunately only Top 3 go to JO's. But wait, there's hope. If the Central California Association (Region 14) only has 1 or 2 runners in that event, our Association (Region 16) gets to backfill the berths. Turns out Central Cal ran 3 in that event last weekend... so we get no extra berths. (Their first place girl was 2:43. The third place girl was 2:58. Ouch.) How fast is 2:24.95? Last year at National JO's - Nationals, not the Qualifer - 2:24.95 was the #1 overall preliminary time and would have been good enough for 3rd in the finals. 3rd. Nationally. And yet 2:24 doesn't even get a JO berth on July 10th, 2010. Ouch again.
--Anna never, ever gave up in her 800 meters. She ran hard all the way to the finish and PR'd by around 5 seconds... amazing for an 800. 2:34.67. Our count had Anna running faster than 12 girls seeded ahead of her as she took 13th overall. We think Anna knows now what the rest of us knew all along... she - and Lisa - belong on the Buffalo Babes and are both fantasic runners.
--Cassidy rolls to an easy 2nd place in the Intermediate Girls 3200. She'll be ready to pop one at JO's in late July. Thanks to Coach Greg of Lodi High for working with Cass for this.
--Claire overcame infrequent practice opportunities to steadily improve throw-by-throw in the javelin and became the first-ever Buffalo Babe to make JO's in any field event by taking 2nd in the Intermediate Girls Jav. Primarily trained in this event by the Napa Track Club, we have Coach Andrea and Coach Frank of Napa TC to thank for her fine form.
--Jerriann ran a hugely smart race and PR'd by 19 seconds!! to take 4th place and just miss a JO berth in the Youth Girls 3000 meters. She cracked the 11:00 barrier for 3000, which puts her around 11:44 for 3200... pretty awesome for being a year away from her freshman track season.
--Renny, who was racing this distance for the first time ever on a track, also PR'd. She took 6th place with a time of 11:22.20. Possibly disappointed, she should not be as running an 8-lap race takes some figuring out, she's at the bottom of the age group, and in two races, Ren has PR'd twice... including the #1 split for all Buffalo Babes relay teams with her 2:28 leading off the Youth Girls. Good job today all 6 of you. YOU ARE AWESOME!!
Kay and Joe
FRIDAY NEWS
Both Youth Girls and Intermediate Girls Relay teams advance to JO's. The Intermediates (Allison, Claire, Kellie, and Shayna) ran unopposed (3 entered/3 advanced) and now shoot. For Top 8 at the JO’s. The Youth (Renny, Miranda, Jerriann, Ariel, Anna-a) were in a field of 6 and took 3rd. Renny's split was the fastest at 2:28. After Miranda's solid split, there was no doubt the Babes would advance, and the girls cruised in from there.
Steeplechase - at 3:00 Friday on the very first event of the weekend, Shayna and April ran the 2000 meter steeplechase. There first experience ever over the water barrier occurred 10 minutes before the race started. So these five+ laps were a learning opportunity as much as a race and the girls did well. Natalie Dimits of Pleasanton Heat rocked the course with a nice time, but Shayna took 2nd and April was 4th. It does not appear that Central Cal had any Intermediates that tried the steeple, so April should move on too.
Thanks to Lisa and Fiona for coming down Friday and cheering the girls on, and to all parents... Hope your weekend in Modesto was worthwhile.

Great job to all in some mega-wind (and heat) on Saturday and fast fields on Sunday.

YG 3000m
- Jerriann is 11:18.16 (12:07.8c for 3200m) - Excellent 2-mile debut.
MG 1500m - Fiona was an absolute monster in her 1500m... battling until the very end and darn near taking the Association title
Her previous mile PR was 5:38 which is 5:36c for 1600m. Her Sunday 1500m time was 4:56.19 which is 5:18.08c for 1600m ... That's an 18 sec. PR
YG 1500m - Miranda teaches tenacity a lesson... no quit in this girl... none... zero... fuhgeddaboutit
Miranda's previous mile PR was 5:40 which is 5:38c for 1600m. Her Sunday 1500m time was 5:00.50 which is 5:22.50c for 1600m... 15.5 sec. PR
Ariel had some shoe issues, but still went 5:00.28 for 1500m... a 1500m PR and a 5th place medal... way to hang tough Ariel.
Anna and Lisa ran some pretty fine 1500 meters (both right in the 5:50 vicinity) versus some monster competition and have a lot more quality runs where those came from. Good job girls.
MG 800m - Fiona was in another great battle in this race taking 2nd a setting a new personal record by 1 second...
2:27.35
YG 800m - Jerriann ran a solid, near-PR 2:40.11 800m and just missed another medal (9th)

4/21 -  BOSTON MARATHON
Katie Drueen of Modesto High, who just decided on Notre Dame, is running in the Boston Marathon Mon 4/21.  She decided to focus on this instead of HS track, so that's quite a commitment.  She leaves for Boston Thurs. (a little sightseeing before the race) and the race itself is Mon.  Her bib # is 10025 if you want to follow along.  They'll have 5k splits on the event website.
Katie Drueen finishes the 26.2 in 3:37:15.  8:18 pace.  She's a top 2000 female and in the top 1500 for her 18-39 age group.  WAY TO GO KATIE!!  There were 25,000 runners overall.  She had some lingering foot soreness at mile 7 which didn't go away but she stayed on her goal pace of 7:45 for 20 miles until it became a bit of a struggle.  But she finished (and no walking!) and was under 3:40 which qualified her for Boston '09 so that's a nice bonus.  BTW local woman Midori Sperandeo was 89th (2:49) in the US Olympic Trials in Boston the day before.  Pretty good for a 2-time mom, eh?  California women went 1-2-3 in the trials led by Deena Kastor.

GOLDEN WEST
June 11, 2006 - Folsom HS - Folsom, CA
CLASS OF '09 OVER THE CLASS OF '07 ON THIS NIGHT:
ALEX AND JORDAN DUEL IT OUT.... NEW PR'S FOR BOTH
COLO. FROSH KATIE VANATTA POSTS #2 ALL TIME FROSH 2-MILE, MARIE IS 2ND

Jordan's 4:42.21 full mile is the fastest freshman mile in the US in 33 years, second only to Mary Decker! That converts to 4:40.38 which is the #1 1600m time in the nation this year.   Poor Alex...she runs the 3rd fastest mile in the USA (Her converted 1600 time is 4:41.10.) but loses to the nation's fastest time, for the second week in a row. But of course running the way she is, that's hardly 'losing' :)... amazing job to you Alex! A really good race for Marie Lawrence, but frosh Vanatta posted the #2 all time frosh 3200 ever with a solid and consistent 10:16 with some serious wind going on. (You-know-who has the #1 time!) Worth every penny to watch that meet... THANKS Jordan, Alex, and Mel! Great stuff.

DISTANCE NOTES
AMANDA MORENO finishes her amazing career with 5 individual section titles - 3 in cross country, 2 in track (3200 meters).
ALEX KOSINSKI'S 4:42 is the #7 California All-Time Mark, 2nd fastest ever by a Junior, and the #3 mark in the US this year. WOW. Amazing stuff! 5 of the 11 fastest 1600 races in California history have been in 2006. Nicole Blood's 4:45 (5th place) is the winning time almost any other year. 12 of the 13 fastest 1600 times in the USA in 2006 are by California girls. Of note: #2 All-Time is Eileen Claugus (4:39.1, 1973, Rio Americano HS) who later ran for the Buffalo Chips.

ALEX RESUME' CONTINUES TO GROW --------- Here's some of it...
- 2-time SJS Cross Country Section Champion
- 2-time Top 5 at California State XC Meet
- 2005 Footlocker Finalist (20th in the USA)
- 2-time Runner-Up 1600 meters State Track Finals
- Holds #7 All-Time California 1600 meter mark, #3 in the USA this year
- Broke SJS Masters 1600 meet record two years in a row

(The meet program was wrong and therefore the newspapers got it wrong too. Alex broke the 21-year-old record last year, not the 22-year-old record this year.)

missing and get more accurate times (some are proving elusive) and then try to post who's
done one of these feats, but not the other, which is a longer list.
NOTE: No CIF (HS) competition was available to Harms and Claugus.
They did the above feats as members of the Will Spikettes.
