Lady Cats Win District 4-2A Tournament
BUCHHOLZ: Marc Ellard, first year coach of the Buchholz girls’ golf team, continued Buchholz’s tradition of success at the District 4-2A tournament, advancing to the regional finals for the third consecutive year.
Last year, Buchholz finished in the top three with the leadership of three seniors, including the Gainesville Sun’s player of the year, Nicole Boyett.
Even with those seniors gone, Buchholz placed first on Monday at Ironwood Golf Course with a combined score of 351, winning by 21 strokes over second place Orange Park Fleming Island (372) and 46 strokes over third place Jacksonville Bartram Trail (397).
“It’s nice to advance but at the same time it’s special to win the district after losing three seniors,” Buchholz coach Marc Ellard said.
Buchholz was the only team in the tournament to not have a player shoot over 100. Each player shot in the 40s on their respective front nines.
“We talk about that,” Ellard said. “Even though we’re individuals out there, they take the top four scores to go. We talk to them about shooting at or below their average. It just worked out this year that they we’re all in the low 40s or high 40s.”
Freshman Kathryn Gagnon led the way for Buchholz with an 82, the third lowest round of the tournament. After shooting 45 on the front side, Gagnon fired a 37 on the back which included holing out an eagle from 90 yards on the par four 11th. Gagnon closed the round with three pars and a birdie on the last four holes.
“That eagle really made me feel good and I just wanted to continue playing like that,” Gagnon said.
