Masters of Classic

Report by Rockin' Ray Bart

"Unkind folk would call us Old Fat Blokes in tight pants, more subtle types might refer to us as Mature Ballplayers, and perhaps somewhere in between lies the real truth.

The Club Classic Masters, as usual, was a snodger of a weekend and one of a few venues these days where old Bruins lineups reform and go to play.  Nursing our decrepit (Ray Lane excepted) physiques through the round robin stage, we managed to limp in to the semi finals where we were rolled by the impressive Hooter's lineup 4 to zip. We must have roughed 'em up good though, as they were then dealt with in the tournament final by the Bombers of Tweed.  It was a most ripping victory.

Many thanks to the new guys who played with us in the event, most of whom also were kind enough to chuckle politely at our 80's vintage jokes and stupid banter.  Next year, however, we probably will need to employ and interpreter for Spike (Sausages) Clancy as he is one of the few remaining humans who can actually talk in hyroglyphics .

Kiwi import Col Sutherland, frequent Bruin Gavin Lucas and new comers Greg Boddice, Bobby Biggs and Clancy Condren all were welcome additions to our team and we hope they are kind enough to come back and do it again when next we suit up.  As usual, Bruins legends Ray Lane , Warren Cutts and Simon Carr were all smashing, with the usual display of spectacular Laney catches, Carr home run power and Cutts bleederisms.  In addition, the terrible twoesome of Gyte and Stone were solid and reliable in and out of the beer tent.

Thanks to Tracey our scorer and of course the magic Christine Jacka who, despite outgrowing our usefulness as ballplayers, still finds a place for us older dudes to play.  We love ya, Cracka!

Bruins Masters will return........."

MASTERS SHOW THEY ARE THE MASTERS
Bruins Ruins showed they still have the right stuff by making the Grand Final in the Masters Club Classic tournament this Queen's Birthday weekend. It is the second year of masters for this annual event but our first outing as a masters team but not the last. It was a success not just for coming second but the getting together of our past greats Raymond Lane , Ray Bartorillo , Marty Connolly, Simon Carr and Warren Cutts came all the way from Perth to make his master debut. Add current Bruin Shane Emery and the master Geoff Michel and you almost have the Classic Team of 19 . PK Pride were too strong for us and in the end it was a one-sided event, but too much fun was had to not feel like a winner. Bruins would like to thank Gavin Lucas, Rob Jemmott, Darren Skipper. Ian Gyte and Neville Stone for donning the brown and orange to make a great team in 2007. Go Bruins !

BRUIN OFF TO SYDNEY FOR QUEENSLAND
Richard Devey was selected to represent his State at the upcoming Nationals being held in conjunction with the Womens Nationals in Sydney starting on the 6th of January 2007. It is a major anniversary for softball at National Level and that is why it is being held earlier this year so as both the men and women can be honored at the same ceremony. Richard was the only South Brisbane player to make it, although our Tyron Bartorillo will be playing for the Northern Territory as a pick-up. Also in the team are ex-Bruins Terry Downes, Hamish Monkman and Darren Pyke and the team is coached by master Bruin Geoff Michel.

We at the Club wish you all the best and bring home the shield boys !
