Exceptions: "Playing up" a division
Note: Players who played in other leagues may also qualify for these exceptions, but BRSLL will require a recommendation from their previous league.
Note: Final division placement for Majors, AAA and AA will depend on tryout performance.
Exceptions: ”Playing Down” a division.
Choosing a Division - As part of the registration process, you will be asked to specify a division preference consistent with the age requirements and rules listed above. The decision of whether to choose a higher or lower division for you child's age group can be a difficult one, so we offer here a few things to consider. Players who "play up" will benefit from facing stronger competition and from practicing with older, more skilled players. However, they may receive less playing time than if they played at their age level. They will also have a different social experience as they will likely be one to two years younger than most of their teammates. Players who play in a lower division may receive more playing time and may have opportunities to play different positions than they would in the higher division, but may find the level of competition less challenging and may receive less instruction in advanced skills.
Requests to "play up", as defined above, will be decided in the competitive divisions (AA, AAA, and Majors) by the tryouts and player draft. Players who are not selected by the draft in their division of preference will be placed in the next lower division. Requests for 6-year-olds to "play up" in Farm will be decided by a player evaluation, to be conducted on try-out day by the Minors Player Agent.
Requests to "play down" will be evaluated by the League's player agents during tryouts. If the player agent believes that, because of the player's size, strength, or skill level, the player would be out of place in the selected division, the agent will contact the parents to discuss moving the player to a higher age-appropriate division.
Ultimately, player placement in competitive divisions (AA, AAA and Majors) will depend on tryouts, the player agents’ assessment of each child’s baseball skills and the number of spaces available in each division. Therefore, your child is not guaranteed placement in the division for which you register.
If you have further questions about player placement, email Minors Player Agent Dan Cobb
dmcobb@sbcglobal.net or Majors Player Agent Walter Smith
was1@moverite.com.
Majors Division - 12-year olds (birthdates from May 1, 1997 to April 30, 1998) must register for Majors. This is a Little League National requirement and can be waived only with the approval of the President of BRSLL and the Little League District 52 administrator. Players of league age 10 or 11 who played in the AAA division in the 2009 season and were selected to the Minors Superbowl All-Star team or the District 52 9/10 year old all-star team must try out for Majors.
Baseball Tryouts - Tryouts
are required for Majors, AAA and AA baseball divisions, even for players who
have already played in them before. If you register for the Majors, AAA or AA divisions, information on tryouts will be sent to you by email later in December. Tryout dates will be January 9 and January 23, 2010 and players must attend at least one session.
Team Assignment
Policy - Teams will be assigned in accordance with our league’s supplemental rules for each division. For Majors, AAA and AA, tryouts and a draft are used to place players. For Farm, players are placed on teams by the Farm division VP and the Minors Player Agent. For T-ball, teams are formed at the T-ball organizational meeting, which is scheduled for February 11, 2010. There are no guarantees of specific teammates or coaches. An exception will be made for children of team managers / head coaches (who will be assigned to their parents' team), and for siblings in the same division (who, if requested by parents, will be assigned to the same team).
3 - Volunteer Requirement
Belmont Redwood Shores Little League is dependent on volunteers to deliver a great experience to the children of the community. The league requires each family to volunteer during the season. Before you can complete the registration process, you will need to select one of the following volunteer opportunities:
Team Manager - The Team Manager has overall responsibility for the team and is the league's point of contact with the team. The manager is responsible for ensuring that the philosophy, goals, Codes of Conduct and rules for our league and the particular division are communicated, monitored and enforced. The manager has responsibility for organizing and managing the conduct of practices and games and working with the team coaches to develop practice and game plans, including rotation of players and minimum play time as required by the rules of the particular division. The manager must be a positive role model, an educator and a motivator. Managers are selected for each team before the season starts and the manager's child is guaranteed a spot on the team. The time commitment is for one or two games and one or two practices per week, depending on division.
Head Coach - The Head Coach is responsible for player development and training. The coach runs practices and pre-game warm-ups and substitutes for the manager whenever the manager is not available. Head coaches are selected for each team before the season starts and the head coach's child is guaranteed a spot on the team. The time commitment is for one or two games and one or two practices per week, depending on division.
If you volunteer for Manager or Head Coach, please register next to your name on the registration page.
Assistant Coach - If you would like to be involved in coaching but are unable to make the time commitment required to be a head coach or team manager, you may volunteer to serve as an assistant coach. Assistant coaches can help at practices and during games, as they are available and as agreed upon by the manager and head coach. Most teams will need from one to three assistant coaches.
Team Parent - The Team Parent organizes team activities such as game snacks, team parties, picture and yearbook distribution, etc. The team parent assists the manager by communicating with team families regarding practice and game schedules, volunteer assignments and other team and league events.
Scorekeeper - Scorekeepers are needed are needed in the AA, AAA and Majors divisions to keep the scorebook for your team. In AAA and Majors, a second scorekeeper is needed to keep pitch counts. For those new to scorekeeping, the league will hold a scorekeeping clinic. Scorekeepers are not needed for Farm and T-Ball divisions.
Field Preparation - Water, drag and line the field before your child's "home" games; clean-up after "away" games.
Umpire - Parent volunteer umpires are welcome in all divisions (other than T-Ball) and do all the umpiring in the Farm and AA divisions. For those new to umpiring, the league provides training.
Team Photographer - Take digital photos of your child's team in action and provide a photo CD for each child at the end of the season. Provide photos for the yearbook.
Team Safety Officer - Ensure that all safety rules are followed during games. Bring a first-aid kit to all games and assist with first aid in the case of injury to participants. This is an ideal volunteer opportunity for trained medical professionals (doctors, nurses, EMTs, etc.). For those without training or professional experience, a first aid class will be offered prior to Opening day.
Volunteers who have direct contact with children (managers, head coaches and assistant coaches) are required to complete a Little League volunteer form. The form can be obtained at Volunteer Form and either mailed to BRSLL PO Box 1 Belmont, CA 94002 or dropped off at one of our two walk-in registration days.
