Why we like him?
Not only is Pele one of the all-time greatest players of the world's most popular sport, but he's also an author, actor, composer, businessman, and ambassador of peace and goodwill.
Why is he famous?
Pele became famous around the globe at the age of 17, following his spectacular World Cup debut in 1958. He led the Brazilian national team to three World Cup titles ('58,'62,'70), and is the only three-time world champion in soccer. When he joined the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League in 1975, he single-handedly helped make the sport more popular among American sports fans.
