STEVE SARAUER - HARRIS BANK COACH OF THE MONTH
Coach Steve Sarauer was honored for being named the Harris Bank Coach of the Month. He is pictured with the various Players of the Month at the ceremony between periods of the April 8 Chicago Blackhawks game at the United Center. Only 6 area coaches received this award this year. Steve was selected by the committee for his work in bringing the Barrington Broncos JV team to the Illinois state finals and winning the 2007 and 2009 championships in 2 of his 3 years with the Broncos. He also was named for his great work with the Redwings PeeWee A team, guiding them to a very successful 2008-09 season and into the NIHL and Blackhawk Cup tournaments. Way to go Coach Steve! Enjoy the official writeup below...
HARRIS BANK COACH OF THE MONTH - MARCH 2009 Your Favorite Hockey Experience: My favorite hockey experience has to be coaching the Barrington Broncos high school teams. Not only did we have an amazing season this year winning the JV state championship, but we did the same in 2007 with a thrilling overtime victory. I was also able to Assistant Coach the Varsity team which made the Elite 8 this year in the State Tournament. These kids work hard nearly year-round for a chance to play Broncos hockey and when their hard work and determination is rewarded with a State Championship all the hours of hard work finally pay off. How/Why you got started with coaching hockey: I first started coaching when I turned 18 and was still trying to develop my own hockey career. I started coaching AAA hockey in Wisconsin under Gino Cavallini, former St. Louis Blues player, and was able to learn the game from a different point of view. This made me better, not only as a coach, but also as a player. I stepped into a full time coaching position after I sustained a career-ending knee injury at the Phoenix Coyotes rookie training camp in 2002. I then coached multiple AAA teams in Wisconsin for several years. Then, three years ago I was brought to Barrington where I am now the Assistant Hockey Director for the Barrington Redwings, Redwings Peewee A Head Coach, the Barrington Broncos JV Head Coach and the Varsity Assistant Coach. Favorite Blackhawks Experience: My favorite Blackhawks experience was being able to attend the Winter Classic this year. Even though the Blackhawks took a tough loss, the intensity of the crowd and the atmosphere of the game was something that I will never forget. Other Accomplishments: This season I have had the chance to Coach a one of the greatest group of Peewee A players at the Barrington Redwings. I have never had such a good group of both parents and players, which really helped gel the entire team. We were able to win multiple tournaments in Wisconsin and accomplish something we never thought was possible, a 4th place finish in the A division of State this past Season. GO REDWINGS!
Any other information you want to share: After my coaching experiences over the past 9 years and coaching hundreds of different kids, I never get tired of seeing the smiles on the young kids as they come into the rink. I am truly blessed to be able to coach hockey for a living. Coaching hockey has many ups and downs. Each particular player is different, but the life lessons that hockey teaches us is more than any other sport around. We learn teamwork, responsibility and commitment, and we always want to be at the rink! Hockey is the fastest, most fun and most rewarding game in the world! Friday, April 3

GOLD MITES TEACH US A LESSON ABOUT DETERMINATION
You can't make this stuff up.... The Redwings Gold Mites did not have a single win all season except for their very first practice game in the early fall. That was the case until this past weekend's Chicago Shootout Tournament at the Center Ice of DuPage in Glen Ellyn. The Gold Mites' first game was against the St. Louis Rockets and the score finished 5-2 Rockets. Redwings goals were by Ceci Bresch and Colby Osterhues.Game 2 was against the Glen Ellyn Admirals and the score was 1-0 with Colby Osterhues scoring the only goal, and what a goal it was – top shelf on a wrist shot. Third game was against the Glen Ellyn Admirals – the winner of this game advanced to the championship game. Ceci Bresch scored 2 goals and Daniel Parisi scored 1 goal to lead us to a 3-1 victory! The championship game was another contest against the Rockets. It was a come from behind victory in overtime – 1 minute and 43 seconds into overtime. Colby Osterhues had a goal and also assisted on the winning goal by Ceci Bresch. The Redwings Gold Mites finished as champs! Awesome! All the kids played their hearts out, they really came together and played great as a team. It was a weekend that they will all remember for a very long time! Never quit trying. Never give up. BANTAM A's DID NOT NEED LUCK TO WIN IRISH SPRING FLING TOURNAMENT
Game 1 - Redwings v. Ice Dogs Selects. With the contest tied 2-2 after one period with Tommy Turner scoring both goals (assists by Charlie Hirsch and Danny Widmoyer), and no scoring in the second period, Charlie Hirsch got the winning power play goal. Final result, a 3-2 win for the Redwings.
Game 2 - Redwings v. Irish Selects. Winning from the opening face-off, 4-0 after one period, 5-0 after two periods, with no scoring in third. Goals by Charlie Hirsch (2), Jack McVickers, Brian Warner and Jack O'Sullivan. The game ended in a 5-0 shutout for netminder Marty Rytel.
Game 3 - Redwings v. Youngstown Phantoms. A tight game, tied 0-0 after one period, and still tied 0-0 after two. Alex Rasiarmos put the Bantam A's ahead with a goal, assisted by Carter Bailey, only to have Youngstown tie it up 1.5 minutes later, leaving the teams with a 1-1 tie.
Championship - Rematch between the Redwings and Youngstown Phantoms. Once again tied 0-0 after one period and also after two. Teddy Boldt kick-started the Bantam A's, putting the team up 1 with a beautiful backhand goal. Matt Sawatski scored 19 seconds later with what would be the game winner when his shot went off a defenders skate and into the net. Alex Rasiarmos then wove his way thru the Phantom defenders for a hard earned goal and Charlie Hirsch fired in a screamer topshelf to seal a 4-1 Championship victory.
A total of 10 of 14 Bantam A's were involved in scoring or assists. No hattricks, no playmakers, one shutout. A textbook team victory!

PEEWEE A's HEADS ARE SWIMMING WITH THEIR WATERPARK CLASSIC CHAMPIONSHIP
The Redwings PeeWee A's played in the Wisconsin Dells Waterpark Classic Tournament the weekend of March 13-15. The PeeWee A's won the tournament and here's how they pulled it off! They started by playing their first game in front of their opponents hometown crowd, against the Dells/Delton Blades and lost 2-8. The PeeWee A's then regrouped and won the next game against the Waterloo, Iowa Hawks by a score of 1-0 with the goal scored by Brandan Branthaver and a shut-out by Marcus Kunzmann. Next, the Redwings crossed over to the higher bracket for one game and lost a heartbreaker to the Reedsburg Polars by a score of 1-0. Within our pool (Dells, Waterloo and Redwings), the top two went to the championship game. In the championship game the PeeWee A's played the Dells/Delton Blades again and came from behind to tie the game at 3-3 in regulation. Goals were scored by Brandan Branthaver, Kelly O'Sullivan and Christopher Lolli. The teams then played a 4-minute sudden death overtime period that went scoreless and this took the teams to a shoot-out. In the shoot-out, Marcus Kunzmann stopped all the Dells/Delton Blades shooters, and James Hess and Christopher Lolli were able to score at the other end for the Redwings' win. What an exciting finish to a great season! Friday, February 27

"WHERE'S THE JERSEY?" 4TH SIGHTING- IN THE GREAT WHITE NORTH!
![]()
Our most recent jersey sighting comes from Quebec City, Quebec at the 50th Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament 2009. While our Redwing teams are playing their Blackhawk Cup, NIHL and NWHL end-of-season games; 2,300 PeeWees from 16 countries converge on Quebec to play their games in front of approximately 200,000 spectators.
Future NHL stars like Brad Park, Guy Lafleur, Marcel Dionne, Gilbert Perrault, Mark Howe, Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Sylvain Côté, Eric Lindros, and Mark Messier all played in this tournament early in their careers. Some of them were there this week coaching their children's teams.
Every participating team plays at least one game in the 15,400 seat Colisee Pepsi, home to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Remparts (coached by Patrick Roy) who sell the place out, and this is the former home ice of the Quebec Nordiques of the NHL.
There is some great hockey being played by these PeeWee clubs. The people of Quebec love their hockey and they make sure the visiting players know it! What a thrill it is to be right in the middle of this worldwide hockey gathering.
Remember to wear some Redwing item on Friday's or wherever you travel. Send us a jpg and we'll choose a photo to put on the website. Where will the jersey turn up next? Thursday, August 14
LEARN-TO-SKATE AND SCOOTERS HOCKEY SCHEDULES FOR 2008-09
If you want your children to learn to ice skate, or want to get them started in organized youth hockey, then you want to get them enrolled in the Redwings' Learn to Skate or Scooters hockey programs. We have boys and girls starting as young as 4 years old. What better way to give your kids an outlet for their athletic energy than to learn about skating and ice hockey from experienced Redwing coaches that tailor the instruction to your child's skill level? Our program is structured around fixed days and times that make it easier for the family to plan their schedules. Please check the schedule and send an e-mail to registrar@redwinghockey.com. We’ll advise you about the level and session that best fit your family's needs. Registration takes place the first few days of each session. This is a great first step toward boys or girls youth hockey.
You can also contact Bob Johnson at registrar@redwinghockey.com or pickup info at the Barrington Ice Arena at Highway 14 and Pepper Road (next to Saturn of Lake Barrington) Wednesday, February 25
REDWINGS SQUIRT GOLD CAPTURE 2ND PLACE BANNER
The Barrington Redwings Squirt AA hockey team finished runner-up at the Northern Illinois Hockey League Tournament earlier this month. After splitting its first two round-robin games on January 31st and February 1st, the Squirt AA's faced a win-or-go-home test when they faced the Chicago Blues on February 2nd. The Redwings advanced to the Championship Game after a fine 3-1 victory.
In the Championship contest the Redwings trailed 2-0 to the Joliet Jaguars before cutting the deficit in half. Another Jaguars goal forced Barrington to pull its goaltender and Joliet tallied an empty-netter and captured the title with a 4-1 decision. The Squirt AA coaches and the players are all very proud of their accomplishment, and they all enjoyed the spectacle and the exciting atmosphere of playing in the title game. Tuesday, February 10
ROUGH WEEKEND FOR REDWINGS IN NIHL TOURNAMENT
February 7th, Lady Luck was distracted and not paying attention to the Redwings. Our teams played very hard, but did not come up with the wins they were looking for on Saturday. The PeeWee A's lost a heartbreaker 3-2 in OT to the Winnetka Warriors in PeeWee Bronze quarter-finals. Our Mite AA's lost to the Wildkits 2-1 in OT in the Mite Silver quarter-finals. And the Squirt AA's could not solve the Jaguar goalie, dropping the Squirt Gold Championship Game 4-1. So, the Redwings run in the NIHL Tournament for 2009 is over, but our teams were in it, they were competitive, and they took their opponents to the limit. That's what hockey is all about. Go Redwings! Wednesday, February 4
SQUIRT AA's WILL PLAY FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP FLAG; MITE AA's AND PEEWEE A's ARE LOOKING TO ADVANCE
NIHL Tournament Update Mite AA - Mite Silver Division Redwings Mite AA's kicked off their championship chase with a single-elimination game victory over the Ice Dogs by a 3-2 score. Having made it to the final eight, next on the agenda is the Round 2, Saturday, February 7th contest at 1:50pm at Center Ice of DuPage against the #4 seed Wildkits. This game is for chance to advance to the semi-finals. Mite A - Mite Bronze Division The Mite A's played their #3 seed opponents tough dropping a 3-0 game to the St. Jude Knights in their single-elimination tournament. The team has a lot to be proud of, first battling throughout the regular season to make the tournament field as the #14 seed, and then giving the Knights all they could handle in the tournament. Squirt AA - Squirt Gold Division The Redwing Squirt AA team has made it through their round-robin bracket, dropping a tight game to the Sabres, 1-2 and then beating Winnetka 4-0 and taking a must-win game from the Blues 3-1. The Squirt AA's advance to the Championship Game this Saturday at 3pm in Joliet. The team will prepare this week for their contest with the Jaguars, whom they played twice during the regular season, winning 4-2 and losing 5-3. PeeWee A Our PeeWee A's will start their single-elimination bracket with a game at 2pm on Saturday the 7th, against the #7 seed Winnetka Warriors at Johnnie's Ice House in Chicago. The Warriors beat the Huskies to advance to this Round 2 contest with the #2 seeded Redwings. The PeeWee's are ready to rock n' roll so Winnetka better watch out on Saturday. Bantam Elite In their round-robin bracket, the Bantam AA's went 1-1-1 but did not advance. The team lost to the #2 seed Wilmette 4-2 on Saturday, tied the #7 seed Chargers 1-1 on Sunday and knocked off the #3 seeded Vikings 4-3 on Monday. The tie against the Chargers left the Bantam's just one point short of a three way tie in which they could have advanced to the Consolation or possibly the Championship game this weekend. Terrific performances against the very best Bantam teams all season long. Hats off to the Bantam AA's for a stellar season where they went toe-to-toe with the elite teams from the beginning to the end of their NIHL season. Good luck to all our team's as play in the 2008-09 NIHL Tournament continues!

PEEWEE A's AND PARENTS GETTING THEIR DOSE OF VITAMIN "H"
The PeeWee A squad dialed down the intensity one evening and let their parents skate with them in a Family Skate session. This team has been on a tear in their NIHL PeeWeeBronze division and it was a pleasant change to tangle with their "older and slower" family members on the ice. And, if that wasn't enough fun, the team later partied together until it was time for the parents to go to bed!

BANTAM A FINISHES 2ND AT ICE DOGS THANKSGIVING SHOOTOUT
The Redwings Bantam A team is this year's runner-up in the 2008 Ice Dogs Thanksgiving Shootout!
After a rough start in the first game against the Wolfpack, the boys came back to win 4-2. Two of the goals were scored by Danny Widmoyer with assists from Alex Rasiarmos.
The second game vs. the Ice Dogs Selects went just as well, with the Redwing Bantam A's winning 4-0. Matt Sawatski contributed two of those goals and Marty Rytel had the shutout.
The team tied their third game 2-2 against the Glenview Stars, with Zach Patton putting the tying goal in shortly after the start of the third period. This advanced our Bantams to the championship game, where they met the Winter Club of Lake Forest.
In the Chamionship Game, Matt Sawatski scored the Redwings' only goal on the Winter Club in the third period, and the game ended 5-1. It was a great weekend of hockey for our Bantam A Redwings who are hustling all the time. Way to go boys!

VARSITY BRONCOS HOST REDWING ADMIRERS
Six of our current Redwings wanted to see how the Bronco's practices compare to their own. By winnning the bidding at the recent Redwing Fundraiser, they paid to share the pain the Varsity feels when Coach Rob and Coach Steve work them out. After finishing this practice, all six Redwings were still breathing and had a pulse too! Evan Dardanes, Andrew Lieske and Sammy Maasarani of the Redwing Squirt A's; Kiernan (Kiko) Racicot of the Squirt AA's and Cameron Wasem and Grant Smith of the Mite A's all enjoyed their Varsity practice, and remain interested in becoming a Varsity Bronco once they reach high school. Friday, December 5
REDWINGS GET A TASTE OF WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE A JV BRONCO
One of the auction items at the Redwings Fundraiser this year, was an opportunity to practice with the Barrington High School Junior Varsity Broncos. Seven Redwing players (some from the PeeWee AA and Bantam A teams) got to run drills, break down film and measure themselves against the Metro Central leading JV's on Wednesday, November 26th. Will it help them make the JV team when they reach high school? Only time will tell. Go Redwings. Go Broncos.

REDWING SQUIRT AA's WIN 4 STATE TOURNAMENT CROWN
The Redwing Squirt AA's competed this November1-2 weekend at a tournament in Indianapolis, playing against teams from Grand Rapids Michigan, Columbus Ohio and Indianapolis Indiana. The team led by Head Coaches Craig Perkins and Steve Cromie gave their competitors fits with their forecheck and tenacious defense. Nearly every Redwing player tallied a goal during the tournament, and goalie Brendan Murray was outstanding in net through all four games. Scoring 17 goals and allowing only 6 over the weekend showed the effectiveness of the Squirt AA game strategy. The culmination of this effort was the Championship final against the Grand Rapids Griffins where the game remained tied at 0-0 after regulation. At the 2:50 mark of the overtime period, the Redwings' Lauren Rogers found the back of the net on a play set up by her linemates defensive pressure, and the Redwings jumped for joy, taking the Championship game 1-0.
Coach Perkins said afterward, "This was a great thrill for the kids and the coaches. It helps us all see what we can accomplish when we stick to our game plan, and when we play as a team. I think it shows us that our upcoming NIHL season can be very special if we keep playing this way."

REDWINGS ON THE RADAR IN BARRINGTON
We try to keep our organization visible with people who might like an athletic outlet like youth hockey for their children. So, we are always doing different outreach programs like the one we have just concluded at the Barrington Library. Here is a photo of one on the five display cases we decorated with a hockey and Redwing theme during the month of August. These display cases were all on the stairs leading up to the Kids Section. This is an example of ways you can volunteer time and help the Redwing Hockey Organization grow stronger. If you have ideas you would like to share, send them to info@redwinghockey.com Thursday, August 14
REDWINGS LOOKED SMOOTH AS ICE AT THE BARRINGTON 4TH OF JULY PARADE
We had another great turnout for the Redwings float in the Barrington 4th of July Parade. Even our beloved Zamboni made a special appearance in the July 4th parade! The kids distributed candy, free public skate passes, and asked children to shoot on goal as we made our way down Main Street.
A great way to kick-off the 4th!
Thanks for helping show Barrington our Redwing spirit. Be sure to join us next year. Go Redwings!
WHY ARE THE TEAM SITES BLANK?
They are blank because we need volunteers from each team to input information as it becomes available - rosters, game and practice schedules, etc.. If you like tinkering on the internet, you will enjoy working with our eteamz web site. Decide which parent will handle your team's site on www.redwinghockey.com and contact the Redwings Webmaster for help getting started. Your interest will help improve communications within your team, with the RHO family and with board members.
