Bucs picked to finish #7 in 2006

The 2006-2007 Bucs draw the shortest straw according to "Dave Campbell's Texas Football" which lists the Bucs at #7 in district. The Bucs have no place to go but up as the team weakness is cited as returning strength. Pearland won District 24-5A in 2005 and was promptly defeated in bi-district, 52-21 by North Shore. North Shore was 11-1 in 2005 and is once again projected to dominate the early playoff rounds this season. Luckily for 24-5A, due to UIL realignment, District 23-5A as we knew it last season is now 22-5A (North Shore, Deer Park, La Porte, Pasadena ISD). 2006's District 23-5A is now made up of the Sugar Land and Missouri City schools...(including powerhouse Missouri City Marshall). If all goes to schedule, 24-5A should play the revamped 23-5A Fort Bend schools in the playoffs.

2006 Projected Rankings (enrollments) and 2005 results:

1. PEARLAND (Division I- 4,075) Div. I- lost 52-21 to North Shore in bi-district

2. CLEAR LAKE (3,550) Finished last.

3. CLEAR CREEK (3,747) 24-5A Div. II- defeated 23-5A champ Deer Park 22-21 in bi-district; lost in area round to Beaumont West Brook 47-27
4. GALVESTON BALL (2,611) Forfeited season

5. CLEAR BROOK (2,814) Finished in fifth place

6. ALVIN (2,589) Div. II- 24-5A third spot, took Ball's place in playoffs and lost to La Porte 42-19. Alvin lost All-District QB J.B. Brown to Brazosport along with assistant coach James Brown. Alvin will split its student pool with the new Manvel High School. Manvel will play a freshman and sophomore schedule, and add a class each year.

7. BRAZOSWOOD (2,674) Finished sixth place ahead of Lake

Webmaster's Buc Blog for 11-18-06:

PEARLAND,TX- Okay...can you say Friday Night Lights for real!! Friday's Division II Bi-District Championship between Brazoswood and Clements was like a great boxing match, and the Bucs walked away with the Title Belt!
First of all, the atmosphere at Pearland's "The Rig" Stadium was turbo-charged and you could not find a better environment for Texas high school football. Included in this environment were: a cold, clear Friday November night, a sellout B'wood crowd on the home side of the field, an old rivalry between former district schools, great athletes, and an outstanding performance by the Buc Band.
Over the last few years, Pearland's athletic facility has been a relatively friendly location for B'wood athletics. For those who keep track, we can remember big victories there including: the Bi-District baseball championship in 2004, the baseball team's 24-5A #1 seed thrashing of Clear Creek in 2006, the Lady Buc wins over Pearland there in 2005, the football victory over defending champ Clear Lake there in 2005 and now the football's team 2006 Bi-District championship. Let's hope this trend continues.
In attendance at Friday's game were: Buc Football coaching legend L.Z. Bryan, David Carr, numerous former B'wood teachers and students, and scouts from other high schools in the football playoffs. Not to mention David Carr's younger brother- Derek was in action trying to lead his team Clements on a playoff march.
Well, like brother like brother as both took frustrating losses this weekend. The vast blue and silver fan base from Southern Brazoria County had other ideas than to witness the rise of another Carr. Not only did the Bucs hit ten wins in a season for the first time since 1983, but the Bucs joined Pearland as the only surviving teams left in this year's playoffs. B'wood is also the only team left from 24-5A in Division II.

B'wood football alum Bryan Webb new assistant at San Marcos football program

San Marcos fills head coaching spots

San Marcos — San Marcos’ sports fans will see at least two new faces prowling the sidelines and dugout this season.

Shad Scharlach will take over the women’s basketball program and Bryan Webb will head up the baseball team at San Marcos High in the upcoming school year. Both were offered the jobs this week and each signed and sent in their respective contracts.

Scharlach, most recently an assistant at Wimberley, replaces head coach Bob Killam, who guided the Lady Rattlers to a playoff berth and a third place district finish last year. Killam departed for a job closer to his family.

Webb, formerly the athletic director and head football/baseball coach at 1A Baird High School outside of Abeilene, will replace Mike Montgomery, who recently resigned from San Marcos’ baseball job after seven years.

Webb will also fill another post Montgomery held as an assistant football coach. San Marcos football coach and athletic director Steve Van Nest indicated that Webb will coach on the defensive side of the ball, most likely defensive ends.

Both Scharlach and Webb are young and passionate about coaching. Those characteristics clearly fit a mold Van Nest was searching for to fill the two positions.

“We take pride in athletics here at San Marcos and we wanted people who can move these programs forward immediately,” Van Nest, who handled both coaches’ hiring, said.

Scharlach served as an assistant at Wimberley for the past three seasons under Cheree Monden. He got his start in coaching women’s basketball as a student assistant at the University of Texas from 1994 to 1997. He was then a head coach for three seasons, two at S and S Consolidated High in Sadler and one at Round Rock High. Some frustrations with being a head coach led Scharlach away from Round Rock, where he coached in the 2002-03 school year.

“It just wasn’t a perfect situation in a lot of ways,” Scharlach said. “It really wasn’t the place for me.”

It’s clear Scharlach believes he’s found the right opportunity in San Marcos, however.

“I was very impressed with the people I met in San Marcos,” Scharlach said. “I’d have to be, because I was extremely happy with my job in Wimberley.”

Scharlach knew he eventually wanted to get back into a head coaching position, and after weighing several other offers he chose to take over the Lady Rattlers. With players like LaBreca Fennell, a first-team all-district forward that averaged 12.9 rebounds per game, returning from last year’s playoff team, Scharlach should be in position to hit the ground running.

“I think he can take over and take it a little further,” Van Nest said. “We wanted someone who could move things forward immediately.”

Webb will face a tougher task. The Rattlers barely missed out on a playoff spot last season and return several key players including Josh Green, but San Marcos will also enter a much tougher district next season that includes the likes of Westlake and several other top notch South Austin teams.

Webb, like any new hire would be, is undaunted. Though on a lower level, Baird plays in a very tough district, a district where several different teams had qualified for the state tournament in Austin before Webb’s arrival.

“You had to compete or you’d get blown out of the water,” Webb said.

The coach has also faced some difficult competition. Baird’s baseball team didn't face another class 1A team until the district schedule. That seasoning before entering district play may have hurt Webb’s teams’ overall record, but it resulted in five playoff appearances and three district championships over six years.

Webb played his college baseball at Tarleton State and Ranger Junior College and is originally from Lake Jackson. His extensive baseball experience played a major part in getting the job.

“He has a great baseball background, he played in a great program,” Van Nest said. “He also has the proven ability to take over a team.”

Webb, 34, will move to San Marcos with his wife Britney and three sons, Gunner, five, Kannon, three, and a baby, Kutter, who is two weeks old.

    2005 Buc Football Update:

BUCS ARE 4-6, 2-4 DUE TO BALL FORFEIT

Coach Dean DeAtley's Bucs of 2005 finished 4-6 overall and 2-4 in district play but that record may be a bit deceptive as the Bucs finished close in many of 2005's contests.
In a season marked by disruption due to Hurricane Rita, the Bucs vastly improved in many ways over the 2004 team. The Bucs were highly competitive in at least five of the losses and could very easily have finished 8-2, respectively.
Another highlight was defeating the 2004 champ Clear Lake at Pearland.
Strong individual efforts were displayed by several Bucs.
The Bucs were led in rushing by Josh Felder who had 740 yards on 163 attempts and Yobis Walker who had 294 yards on 58 attempts. Max Sencherey and Matt McClure also saw some action in the rushing department averaging 12.3 and 6 yards per carry.
In passing, Matt McClure passed for 687 yards on 123 attempts and Royce Moore passed for 217 yards on only 15 attempts.
Top receivers include: Chris King, Devon Bernal, Josh Felder, Freddie Brown, Royce Moore, Jake Fedorchak, and Dan Nisbett.
Top scorers include: McClure, Felder, King, Walker, Brown, Sencherey, and Benedict.
Mike Terrasa and Leonard Botello led the team in kick scoring.
Expect several Bucs to be named to the All-District and All-County teams.
Despite the finish, the Bucs played hard and fought every game. In addition, as it was in the early days of the program, fan support has always run high for the blue and silver from one generation to the next, whether the team plays at Hopper Field or away.
It is exactly that kind of pride which has the Bucs looking at an exciting future.

Galveston Ball disqualified from playoffs and forfeits all regular season victories....Alvin gets in the playoffs

Ball High forfeited its eight victories and two losses this season and removed itself from the University Interscholastic League playoffs Wednesday after discovering the team had used an ineligible player this season. Based on a school press release, the unnamed player’s residency status was called into question.
According to the rules, the UIL requires students to live in a district with a guardian for one continuous calendar year or more before participating in a UIL-sanctioned activity such as football. Students must be eligible for one year or request a waiver due to special circumstances.
Alvin (5-5), now takes Ball's place in the Division II playoffs and will face La Porte at 7 p.m. Saturday at District Stadium in League City.
Alvin coach Michael Bass found out his team would be in the playoffs Wednesday afternoon and moved quickly to get the team on the field.
"We're excited to be going to the playoffs and represent District 24-5A ... and the Alvin community," Bass said.

Once again the road goes through North Shore:

The Pearland Oilers cruised to the 2005 District 24-5A title unscathed at 10-0 for only the third time in school history and made the playoffs again under a rejuvenated program led by Head Coach Tony Heath.
If the Oilers were the 24-5A favorite then they now must play a role they have been unaccustomed to all season....the role of underdog.
Once again the road to Division I high school football glory rolls north through Galena Park as Pearland must once again face undefeated North Shore in 2005.
In last year's battle between the Oilers and Mustangs, North Shore used a balanced rushing and passing attack to defeat Pearland 35-30 at Pearland.
According to the 2005 Class 5A State Farm/Texas Football Top 10 Poll, Head Coach David Aymond's North Shore Mustangs are ranked #7 in the state. Pearland was not ranked in the same poll.
On an amazing note, North Shore reigned supreme in District 23-5A allowing only 44 points all season long while scoring a whopping 491 points on offense.
In 2002, the Mustangs finished the regular season a perfect 10-0 overall and ranked No. 1 in the state of Texas.
In fact, the Mustangs, dating from 2002 to 2000, had won 29 of their last 30 regular-season games and had been ranked No. 1 in the state for more than 10 weeks. As of 2005, the Mustangs have won 50 straight games during the regular season and have never lost at home since they moved into their new stadium.
"It is nice to be recognized," North Shore head coach David Aymond said, "but we would like to be No. 1 at the end of the season. That is what matters most."

In other news, Deer Park is favored over 4-6 Clear Creek (under new Creek head coach Darrell Warden) and new playoff entry- Alvin takes on a tough La Porte squad led by QB Boogie Anagnostou.
