The University Interscholastic League, or UIL, is the administrative entity for all competing athletics on the high school level in Texas. The UIL divides the state into five student-enrollment categories, four state-specific geographical regions, and in each specific region of the state are eight districts, as each district usually has between five and nine schools. The AAAAA conference (5A), where Brazoswood plays, has an attendance requirement of at least 1910 students, and Brazoswood well meets this with its enrollment of 2600 students. Brazoswood is based in the Brazosport ISD in Southern Brazoria County, yet plays in Region III-District 24 with the Brazoria and Galveston County schools: Alvin, Galveston, and Clear Creek ISD.
First, to make the playoffs, a school has to finish in the top three in district action, with the champion receiving the privilege of a bye in the first round (also called bi-district).   There are five rounds of regional playoffs (bi-district, area, regional quarterfinals, regional semifinals, and the regional finals) that a team must advance through before they reach the UIL state tournament. Through the regionals, the coaches from the respective schools decide whether to play a one or three game series. Any further debate is put to rest with a coin flip. To make it even more challenging, a school could end up playing a grueling 15 game postseason schedule before finally advancing to the state tournament, assuming three games are played in all five rounds.
Some ideas that have been thrown about recently include whether or not to allow four schools in the postseason. As of 2005 it happened! (NOTE- takes effect 2006-2007 school year which is the re-alignment year) The idea is to give more schools a share of the fun, and the debates lies in whether or not the proposed fourth place team even belongs in the playoffs at all.

**Feb. 15, 2005 Courtesy University Interscholastic League update:

"Amendments to current UIL rules passed by the Legislative Council of the University Interscholastic League have been approved by Commissioner of Education Dr. Shirley Neeley. The Commissioner’s approval allows the rule changes to take effect beginning in the 2005-06 and 2006-07 school years.
Among the changes approved by the Commissioner was the issue placed on the referendum ballot by the UIL Legislative Council to allow an additional team from each district to advance to the playoffs in conferences 1A and 5A for all team sports"

Also, as of late, much debate has risen over whether to go to a "AAAAAA" or 6A division but this has been subdued due to travel constraints on schools. There are already schools in West Texas that routinely travel over 100 miles just to play the current 5A district schedule with schools of similar enrollment size. Perhaps as with football, baseball will go to a "dual-division" state champion format. Time will tell here.
In turn, while Brazoswood has been one of the premier teams in the Houston/Gulf Coast region since its opening (3 state appearances, 2 titles, the only team in history to throw back to back no-hitters in a single state tourney year at any classification), there have been additional programs that have achieved Texas high school baseball glory. Brazoswood has a long-celebrated tradition of winning, and has had legendary baseball minds such as: Jimmy Dodd, Jacky Mayfield, Bill Poland, Clayton Hill, Bobby Williams, David Bacica, and Bret Hodges...to name a very few.
Programs that have been historical state powerhouses include: Bellaire, Abilene Cooper, Lubbock Monterey, Duncanville, South San Antonio (primarily in the Cliff Gustaffson era), Robstown, Corpus Christi Foy Moody High, Round Rock, Dulles, Spring ( produced Josh Beckett), Cypress-Falls and Sugar Land Elkins as of late. League City Clear Creek is an annual power and draws from the baseball wisdom of Coach Jim Mallory. Bellaire has the most state titles of any baseball team in Texas history and has a legendary coach in Rocky Manuel. When it comes to Texas and Houston-Area baseball, the Brazosport Community has more than its share of reasons to be proud.
