Pearland, Brook, Lake pace 2005 All-District 24-5A selections, Bucs, Creek place six on team
The District 24-5A race was intense and came down to the wire. The balance and competition of the district in 2005 was so even and every game seemed like a playoff game in the district race. On any given night any team could have been defeated and the result is an All-District selection very balanced and headed by Lake Coach Sean Wood.
Ryan Murphy took first team pitcher nods after guiding the Bucs through many close games on the hill for another year. Murphy closed the door on opponents when the going got tough and provided consistent, outstanding pitching for the Bucs. Murphy was first team last year as well for the Region III Quarterfinalist Bucs and was one of the 2005 senior team leaders. Murphy closes out a highly successful high school career.
Matt "Niner" Vern added the latest in a lengthy line of accolades for the TCU-bound senior garnering unanimous first team nods at catcher and capped out a stellar high school career including a Region III Semifinal appearance and Region III Quarterfinal berth. Vern was like a brick wall at home plate refusing to let any wild pitches get past him. He went on a hitting rampage towards the end of the season hitting home runs in several games and throughout the season. Vern should be fun to watch at TCU.
Dustin "Pop" Damian added more honors as well to go along with a 2004 All-District 24-AAAAA First Team- second base honor. Well in 2005, Damian got first team utility honors and proved to be a master of all trades, proving his mettle on the mound and offensively, getting home runs and key hits in several games. Damian was nothing short of outstanding on the hill, proving consistent and effective leadership throughout several games. Damian was also a letter winner from the Region III Semifinalist and Quarterfinalist teams.
Jake Fedorchak exploded for a monster season and garnered second team nods at outfield. The junior combined great defense with speed and offense and hit some home runs and a grand slam against Galveston Ball. Fedorchak proved to be a consistent producer at the plate and kept opponents on their toes.
Tim Jones added more honors to last year's All-District and All-Brazoria County nods. Jones already displayed skill and versatility last year as an outfielder, and in 2005 enhanced his portfolio even more by stepping up as a pitcher and senior team leader. Jones pitched some great games and pitched an oustanding performance against one of Fort Bend's ranked teams and the #4 Houston ranked team at the time- the Clements Rangers early in the season. Jones also provided consistent offensive leadership at the plate.
All-District 24-5A Honorable Mention- Royce Moore stepped up in 2005 as a team leader and emerged as a consistent, timely clutch hitter, providing outstanding defense in the outfield. Moore also displayed excellent speed on the basepaths. Only a junior, Moore should be interesting to look at in 2006.

2005 Buccaneer Team Preview
Brazoswood quietly looking to continue playoff streak in 2005.
February 10, 2005
By Chris Cortez
The Brazoswood Buccaneers are a program that has quietly and consistently established itself overall as one of the Houston areas top 5A baseball programs and as one of the flagship baseball programs of Brazoria County. There are plenty of reasons that 5A baseball is alive and well along the Gulf Coast, and for the Bucs they include: veteran playoff-tested coaching/ leadership, the addition of a sparkling new field house, stadium and dressing rooms at Wilson Field, and an exciting 2005 baseball schedule against some of the areas perennial playoff powers. The Bucs are looking to make the state playoffs for at least the 17th time in 22 years and have been to the Region III Quarterfinals three years straight.

2005 Team Outlook: The Bucs will be shooting for a fourth appearance in the Region III Quarterfinals and will be looking to key senior leadership for a chance to do so. Returners Matt Vern, Ryan Murphy, Dustin Damian, and Tim Jones are just a part of a group able to provide leadership to the newcomers. Many of the 2004 JV players tasted playoff action by joining the varsity during its playoff run. Vern returns for his final season and has already garnered critical acclaim for his performance over the last few seasons just recently being honored at the Houston Athletic Committee Dinner. Ryan Murphy is a veteran pitcher who led the team through some key games in 2004. Murphy is a tough, strong, patient pitcher who can throw some heat. Murphy is consistent, takes a no-frills attitude to the hill, and generally just steps up and wears down his opponents. Damian is a solid, well-rounded athlete who held down the infield last year. He is strong at the plate and a key defensive player with playoff experience. Tim Jones played on the 2004 National Champion Kyle Chapman Blue Team and will be a key player for 2005. Coach David Bacica stated, The district should be about as even as it can be this year with the addition of Pearland. Any team that gets hot and has good solid pitching could vie for a playoff spot. Key players to watch from our JV unit will be shortstop Ryan Tepera and Kelly Schaefer. Both of these players could step in and be a key starter on the mound as well as in the infield. Cullen Williams and Austin Atkins have the ability to fill some gaps with the bat. Coach Bacica added, it should be a wild and interesting year in 24-5A this season.
While the Bucs graduated great players from another playoff team, expect the team to unite behind some playoff tested seniors and winning coaching to once again surprise people and attempt to make an extended run into the playoffs.
H5aB extends many thanks to Coach Bacica for his assistance in compiling this report.
