The Facts

Published May 15, 2008 CLUTE,TX-- After 30 years of service in the dugout, Brazoswood Buccaneer baseball assistant David Bacica has decided to hang up his cleats.

With more than 400 victories as a head coach at several high school programs, Bacica has roamed the Bucs dugout as an assistant since 1996 under head coaches Bobby Williams and Bill Polan.

“He’s been my right-hand man, keeps me organized and has gone above and beyond the call of duty for the kids,” Williams said. “From tutoring them, he has just been unbelievable. These kids are going to miss him real bad.”

Bacica and the Bucs are 24-12 this season and still alive in the postseason. Brazoswood faces District 24-5A rival Alvin in a three-game set beginning at home at 7 p.m. today.

“I primarily have other things of interest that I’d like to do and since both of my boys (Nick and Joey) are out of high school,” Bacica said. “Also, if we’d like to visit them for an extended weekend I won’t have to worry about missing a game. I haven’t missed one in over 30 years and didn’t want to start now.”

Bacica started the baseball program at Waller High School in 1978 and won more than 42 games and two co-District 22-2A titles.

After his stint there Bacica came to the Brazoria County area where he took over the Brazosport Exporter baseball program the next 12 years.

The Ships were district champs in 1983 and reached the region final the next year.

Bacica headed to Pearland in 1994 for a season where he was an assistant baseball coach and varsity football coach. After that year came his calling to Brazoswood country where he spent 12 years as assistant to Williams and Poland.

“I am definitely going to miss his steadiness and calmness in pressure situations,” Williams said. “He brought us the finer points of coaching in pitching, hitting and fielding. I just found out last week, and it is going to be tough to replace him. The kids’ jaws dropped when he announced to us he was stepping down.

“He’s been at it for a long time and is still a young guy who moves and acts like a young guy. He hasn’t slowed down a step in his approach and enthusiasm.”

Bacica has more than enjoyed his time as a Buc assistant, getting the opportunity to coach both of his sons along the way.

“When I first came back to Brazoswood my boys were just starting to play and one thing Bill told me was that we had enough assistant coaches so that I could go see mine play,” Bacica said. “He gave me that opportunity.”

Though he will be leaving the dugout area, Bacica will still roam the halls of Brazoswood High School and remain as the AP geometry instructor. Asked what the game has meant to him, Bacica summed it all up: “It’s been an outlet and not a job,” Bacica said. “It has been just a different way to touch the lives of a kid that I can teach. It is a game that is meant to be played with fun and intensity. The game gave me that outlet opposed to being in the classroom. It is the highs and lows of what the game gives.”

2008- Overachieving young Bucs take one of Alvin's best teams ever to the limit, barely falling in Region III Quarterfinals at Manvel High School

MANVEL, TX -- Alvin earned new life on Friday with a walk-off home run to win Game 2 of its best-of-three Region III-5A quarterfinal series with Brazoswood and the Yellow Jackets took full advantage of their new life on Saturday.

With a solid pitching effort by Josh Land combined with Alvin's ability to scratch out a few runs in the middle innings, the Yellow Jackets knocked off their District 24-5A rivals 4-3 on Saturday at Manvel High School to win the series 2-1.

The Yellow Jackets (32-5) advance to the Region III-5A semifinals where they'll face Bellaire next week. (Alvin would eventually lose the series to Bellaire...still no state championship for Alvin).

It was the Buccaneers who struck first in the third, when Ben Coram hit an RBI single to left to score Ricky Ramos for a 1-0 lead. But the Yellow Jackets struck back in the bottom of the third with a pair. Catcher Travis Snider singled home J.D. Izard and first baseman Moe Guisto followed with an RBI single to score Kevin Martin to give Alvin a 2-1 lead.

"Every little bit helps," said Land, who went all seven innings allowing just three hits and striking out nine in the win. "Those runs took some of the pressure off of me."

Alvin tacked on two more in the fourth thanks in part to three Brazoswood walks to put runners on the bases. Sebastian Mata scored on a wild pitch and Josh Taylor scored on a well-executed squeeze bunt by Michael Guerra for a 4-1 lead.

Brazoswood (25-14) rallied late, scoring a run on a wild pitch by Land and on a groundout but the junior pitcher finished the game with a strikeout of Harrison Faickney.

Land, who pitched on varsity during tournament season and spent some time on the junior varsity, has given Alvin a solid third option to go to in the postseason.

"It's huge (to have that kind of depth," Alvin coach Mike Rogers said. "He kept working hard all season and we told him 'We're going to need you' He came up with a big Game 3 win against Dulles (in bi-district) and we knew he was capable of doing it for us again today."

B'wood wins 7-4 over Creek

By Butch McReynolds

CLUTE, TX -- Tyler Camp overcame eight walks, two hit batters and 140 pitches as the Brazoswood Buccaneers came from behind Tuesday to defeat visiting Clear Creek, 7-4, in a District 24-5A matchup at Wilson Field.

The gutsy Camp and his battling Buc teammates overcame a dismal start which produced a 3-0 Creek lead in the first inning.

“It was not a good start,” Bucs coach Bobby Williams said. “But I thought our kids battled the entire night, especially Tyler. He just wouldn’t give up, and somehow he finished strong. I guess he needs 100 pitches to warm up.”

Camp got into trouble in the first inning after getting the leadoff hitter. He then hit the next two hitters and gave up run-scoring singles to James Wooster and Jared Cosart. The Wildcats, who dropped to 3-3 in loop play, scored the final run of the inning on an infield grounder.

Brazoswood came roaring back in its half of the inning with four straight hits. Jake Gonzales singled to left, followed by a single up the middle by Joseph Reyes and then a sharp single to center by Nick Bacica to load the bases full of Bucs.

Epo Albarado then came up with the first of his two big hits on the night, a double down the rightfield line that plated two runs to cut the margin to 3-2.

Albarado’s shot came off pitcher Cosart, who took over for starter Jack Pollard after he gave up the first three hits of the inning.

With Bucs on second and third, it appeared Cosart had the runner on third picked off. But his throw went well over the third baseman’s head and to the fence, allowing both runners to score and give Brazoswood a 4-3 lead.

Both pitchers settled in until Clear Creek knotted the score with a single run in the sixth inning. Speedster Jeremy Brooks led off the inning with a bad-hop single over Coram’s outstretched glove and then raced around to third moments later on a sacrifice bunt.

Brooks then scored the tying run on a sharp single by Cosart up the middle. Like they had all night, the Bucs got right back off the turf swinging. In the bottom of the sixth, the Bucs got their first hitter on via an error by the Creek shortstop, who made a nice play deep in the hole going to his left, but then threw wildly to first allowing Reyes to reach.

Bacica then layed down a sacrifice bunt and Albarado came through by smashing a run-scoring single up the middle to give the Bucs a 5-4 lead.

Albarado went to second on the play at the plate and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on an infield single by Coram to make it 6-4. Coram later came around to score the final run of the game on a wild pitch.

Camp, who finished with five strike outs, set the Wildcats down in order in the seventh to pick up the win.

Clear Creek had left runners on base the previous six innings, and finished by stranding 10 on the night.

After starting the contest with four straight hits, the Bucs had only one more baserunner until the big rally in the sixth. In that frame, the Bucs had hits by Albarado and Coram, along with two crucial errors by the visitors. Creek finished with four errors, while the Bucs had none.

Brazoswood (13-11, 2-4) travels to Alvin on Thursday for a 7 p.m. start.

"THE OIL FIELD" PEARLAND, TX.- The way the rowdy district 24-AAAAA race has been going in recent memory only guaranteed that a photo finish would be in store for the 2006 season, and that is exactly what happened.

We even got a bonus this year...some play-in games.

The Bucs and Creek played to determine who would represent 24-5A as the champ and runner-up, since both were deemed "Co-Champions"

But you and I know better than that...and so does anybody else involved in the epic "24-5A Shootout". In all actuality, and for purposes of pride and bragging rights, this game determined the "Champion", because a tie is like kissing your sister...and the Bucs DID NOT want to kiss that sister.

So the Bucs decided to beat Creek 11-8 in front of a standing-room only crowd.

Clearly, the Bucs have been seeing "clear" non-stop since April 25. Not only have the Bucs been seeing "clear" but they have been seeing through clear all the way through to the state playoffs. All this baseball would "clear"ly be enough to drive anybody crazy but not these Bucs.

As they did at Clear Lake with a big seven-run fourth inning, the Bucs stormed the Wildcats for nine runs in the top of the sixth and Joey Bacica capped off a stellar debut to help the Bucs beat Creek two out of three this year and gain the right to represent District 24-5A as Champion and a bye in bi-district. The Bucs are guaranteed of a spot in the Area round and are the latest edition of "Buc Baseball Pride".

"Buc Baseball Pride" is the term associated with the Buc teams of the past that have been to the state baseball playoffs at least twenty times over the last three decades. These teams have won state championships and have come close to winning more state championships in various years.

Well, against Creek Saturday night, The Bucs were the visitor and scored in the top of the fourth, fifth, and fateful sixth innings. Creek's big inning came in the bottom of the fifth inning where the Wildcats put up four runs.

Creek jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a Pablo Salinas RBI double and a Doug Stowers balk which brought home Norman Wittkamp.

The Bucs got on the board in the fourth, when Cameren Sigh scored on Kelly Schaefer's fielder's choice.

In the top of the fifth, Ryan Tepera and Doug Stowers singled, and Austin Atkins nailed an RBI single tying the game.

Creek put up its four in the fifth on a Wittkamp double, Josh Darnell RBI-double, a Salinas single and some bases-loaded walks and passed balls.

Just when it started looking suspect for the Bucs, a rally began and Creek went on to make most of its errors in this frame. Creek put Matt Rouse and Trey Thomas in during the sixth but could not stop stem the tide. Schaefer, Dan Nisbett, Cody Murray, Jake Fedorchak, Royce Moore, Tepera, Atkins, Sigh...and virtually the whole batting order had key hits/plays in the rally.

In the end of the rally, the score stood... Bwood- 11 Creek- 6.

In the bottom of the sixth, Creek would add a run and Joey Bacica would inherit a tough situation to pitch in. Bacica would do just fine as he coaxed Bryce Sanders into an out at center, Kevin Morales into an out at first, and struck out Christian Woolridge looking. Score remained 11-7 Bucs.

Creek had the last chance in the bottom of the seventh, and Jereme Brooks led off with a bullet right into the glove of Doug Stowers. Wittkamp did his best Albert Pujols impression with a solo home run shot which appeared headed for Dallas.

Not to worry, Darnell would fly out to right, Salinas would walk, and in a twist of irony, Royce Moore would catch Joey Latulippe's fly ball for the last out (erasing last year's final out at Creek) as the Brazoswood players and crowd erupted in celebration.

The #12 Houston area-ranked Buccaneers will play Elkins at Elkins Friday May 5th at 4:30PM in a tune-up game and will await the winner of #10 Houston area-ranked Bellaire vs. #8 Houston area-ranked Kingwood. (Chris Cortez)

HOUSTON, TX.- Just when you thought the District 24-5A race couldn't get any closer, the Bucs were forced to go falcon hunting, and they did just that, running away with an 8-0 blowout at Clear Lake.
The game was mercifully ended for Lake due to lightning and rain, but not until after a full five innings were played.
The Bucs scored one run in the top of the second inning. Austin Atkins drew a walk off Lake starter Jeff Smith and Scott Morris would courtesy run for Atkins. Cam Sigh would then nail an RBI single which scored Morris.
The Bucs laid down the law in the top of the fourth starting with a Ryan Tepera single to right field. Doug Stowers would be hit by a wild Smith pitch, and Atkins would again nail a chopper to center field and would gain second bases on an attempted Lake throwout at home. Lake catcher Cameron Johnson couldn't make the grab and Tepera scored. Nick Bacica drew a walk and Sigh nailed a single with the out made at home on fielder's choice.
Next, Dan "The Hammer" Nisbett came to play and became one of the game's heroes as he nailed a solid 3-RBI blast scoring Atkins, Bacica, and Sigh. Nisbett gained a double on the play.
Kelly Schaefer would then be hit by another wild Jeff Smith pitch and Jake Fedorchak would make Smith pay with an RBI single scoring Nisbett. That would be all for Jeff Smith as he was forced to hit the showers. Smith's reliever would be rocked by a 2-RBI triple courtesy of Tepera, scoring Fedorchak and Schaefer.
Lake didn't have a chance offensively as Stowers kept the Falcons off balance. Stowers threw a two-hitter with Cameron Johnson and Eric Givens the only players to gain hits for Lake.
The game was swift and the Bucs were fired up with a drive to the playoffs in the back of their minds. The Buc fans packed the stands and it seemed kinda like a Wilson Field game.
It all comes down to Friday, April 28th folks. The Bucs must win to possibly force a district championship game with the Creek-Lake winner and cannot afford to give Clear Brook new life. If there are too many 7-5 teams then a tedious elimination tournament could take place, but we want to avoid that with a win against Brook.
Once again, all Buc fans must do whatever it takes to support the Bucs...home field advantage must be utilized 100%. Last year in the 2005 Brazoswood season finale at Creek at League City (when Creek won 5-4), many of the Clear Brook players were cheering on Clear Creek so Brook could back into the playoffs (which they did). They were hoping for a Clear Creek ISD trifecta (which they barely pulled off). That simply cannot happen again. (Chris Cortez)

CLUTE, TX.- Alvin came into Wilson Field Saturday night with the swagger of a team that just pounded district front-runner Pearland 8-0. The jackets were trying to keep their playoff hopes alive....but Cameren Sigh and Kelly Schaefer weren't trying to hear all that.
Thus, strange things happen when you venture into the home field of a team that has the history that Brazoswood has. The consistent thing was "Buc Pride" at work...and as they have many a time before... Alvin left Wilson Field with a 5-3 loss.
Cam Sigh nailed a solid 2-RBI double, (scoring Ryan Tepera and Doug Stowers) in the bottom of the fifth inning that gave the Bucs a 5-3 lead, and possibly ended Alvin's hopes of a playoff spot.
The fireworks began with Joseph Reyes hitting a solid shot which narrowly became a fly out. Jake Fedorchak then nailed a solid shot and stole second on an Alvin overthrow at first base. "RoMo" Royce Moore and Ryan Tepera drew walks and Alvin put in a new pitcher (Nathan Eovaldi) who would get his world rocked. Dougie Stowers put down a perfect suicide squeeze and the jackets were thrown off as Fedorchak scored. DH Austin Atkins nailed a fly shot to right center which enabled RoMo to score on a tag up. Nick Bacica drew a walk and big Cam Sigh came up to bat. After Sigh took some Babe Ruth style cuts which led to two strikes, Alvin's worst nightmare came true as Sigh connected and launched the monster 2 RBI shot.
The Bucs had scored earlier in the third inning on a Royce Moore RBI single which scored big Dan Nisbett.
Alvin put up two in the third and one in the second on Travis Snider and Callen Kincaide RBIs.
Cody Murray started the game on the hill for the Bucs and Schaefer entered in the top of the third. Schaefer kept the Jackets guessing all night and shut down All-District hitter JB Brown twice. Schaefer pitched an excellent game and showed plenty of leadership in the process.
With Clear Lake's victory over Pearland Saturday, a showdown with playoff implications looms ahead. The game would be Clear Lake this Tuesday at 7PM. This is a HUGE game for the Bucs and must be treated like a playoff game. Everybody tell your buddies, husbands and wives, grandmas and grandpas, girlfriends and boyfriends, homeboys and homegirls to load up the car/truck and make the trek to Clear Lake to cheer on the Bucs so they can get back to the playoffs!!     CLUTE, TX- The last time we met folks we talked about how good the chili spuds were in League City and how well the variety of food around Wildcat Field makes your taste buds water. We also talked about how close the Bucs were to winning game one and about the monster night that Ryan Tepera had in League City.
We also talked about all the rambunctiousness that happened in a game that was poorly controlled. There were all sorts of forgettable things in that match.
Well in a book called Dangerous Liasons there is a famous quote that goes something like: "revenge is a dish best served cold". The Bucs served out some of that dish Friday night at Wilson Field on its way to a 7-3 victory over the Cats.
The Bucs got payback and more in the latest round of the "24-5A shootout".
The best change was a welcome one for the Buc faithful who endured a difficult time the last time these two teams met. The main difference would be the friendly confines of Wilson Field...where the lights are bright, the burgers are always on the grill and the whole family can come out and enjoy some top notch baseball at first-class facilities....and that is exactly what happened.
If Creek were Superman, then Wilson Field must be kryptonite because the Clear Creek varsity hasn't won a game at Wilson Field in over two years...dating back to March 9, 2004.
Perhaps Superman would be a more fitting title for Ryan Tepera, who still had Creek's number striking out 7 more Wildcats to add to his 15Ks the last game against Creek. That equals 22 strikeouts against Creek. Not too shabby at all folks.
The Buc bats weren't exactly chopped liver either. Most of Brazoswood's damage was done in the home side of the first two innings. The Bucs racked up six points and the damage could have been much worse for Creek as the Bucs reloaded the bases and had multiple scoring opportunities early on.
Dougie Stowers and Nick Bacica each had RBI singles in the first and in the second, Dan Nisbett led off with a single to right. Kelly Schaefer walked and Jake Fedorchak nailed a single to right. At this point Trey Thomas was removed from the game and Lee Dolan was placed in as pitcher for Creek. It didn't get much easier for Dolan at this point as "RoMo" Royce Moore nailed an RBI single scoring Nisbett. Ryan Tepera once again helped his cause at the plate nailing a key 2 RBI double. Stowers would single and Austin Atkins would nail an RBI scoring Hunter Ward.
Seven of B'wood's nine starters had at least a base hit, while Kelly Schaefer and Cameron Sigh teamed up for five walks.
Bacica, Fedorchak, and Stowers each had two hits, while Atkins, RoMo, Nisbett, and Tepera ended with one hit apiece.
Creek would add two points in the top of the fourth off a meaningless Pablo Salinas home run shot over left center also scoring Wittkamp. Ross Apffel would add a solo yard shot in the top of the seventh.
Doug Stowers closed out the game for the Bucs being assisted with stellar Buc defense including a double play in the top of the sixth inning. Earlier in the top of the fifth, Jake Fedorchak would make the "catch of the day" robbing Jereme Brooks of extra bases in right with a dramatic reaching grab for the out.
Since Alvin beat Pearland 8-0 Friday night, the 24-5A race is anybody's guess right about now. Bring a can of raid to Saturday's game and lets send Alvin back with a loss. (Chris Cortez)

FRIENDSWOOD, TX- With the help of the visiting Brazoswoood Buccaneers, Clear Brook did its best Baytown Lee impression Tuesday night by laying a "goose egg" on its home scoreboard.
Pardon the pun folks...didn't mean to confuse you. After all, Baytown Lee's mascot is the Ganders and geese lay goose eggs don't they? Well the goose egg we are talking about is the 0 that Clear Brook laid next to Brazoswood's 6.
All kidding aside, the Bucs got two birds with one stone: first, they got a measure of revenge for last season's squeaker 4-3 and 3-1 losses at the hands of a Brook team led by ex-Wolverine James Ferguson.
Secondly, the Bucs turned the 24-5A race on its head by beating a team that also beat Pearland and Clear Lake.
Winning pitcher Doug "Dougie" Stowers was unstoppable, throwing a complete game on the hill for the Bucs. Brook used three pitchers: ace- Jeff Sciba, and relievers: Keith Englishbey and Jason Davis.
Clear Brook hardly looked like the team that scored 13 runs in the fifth inning against Pearland to win 14-9 after getting down 9-1.
That speaks volumes about Stowers and about the Bucs...that on any given night, the Bucs can hang and shut down any offense in Region III.
The Bucs scored in the top of the fourth, fifth, and seventh, displaying speed on the basepaths and exploiting the Brook defense. Austin Atkins led off the fourth with a solid blast up the middle for a single. Tyler Kennedy would courtesy run for Atkins. In a botched double play attempt, David Prahm would overthrow first enabling Nick Bacica to single. Cam Sigh laid down a sacrifice bunt advancing Kennedy. Next, Kelly Schaefer laid down a perfect squeeze bunt scoring Kennedy. Dan Nisbett followed with an RBI single, scoring Bacica. The fun ended on a Scott Morris pop out but not before B'wood put two on the board.
In the top of the fifth, Royce Moore led off getting hit by pitch. Ryan Tepera then hit into another attempted double play by Brook but Prahm sailed the ball over the Brook dugout giving Tepera second base. Tepera stole third and while darting for home, Stowers laid down a perfect suicide bunt with nobody covering first for Brook. Tepera made the score 3-0 Bucs.
In the top of the seventh, Tepera would be hit by a pitch. Stowers would then hit into a double play. Not to worry, Atkins drew a walk, and Bacica nailed a shot to right center. Atkins would score on a Brook overthrow to third and Bacica would take second base. Cam Sigh then nailed a solid shot up the middle for an RBI single scoring Bacica (Sigh would steal second and third base). Schaefer nailed a single after that plating Sigh. Nisbett would ground out and the Bucs led 6-0.
After that it was all defense. Stowers threw 6 strikeouts on the night and a three-hitter. Several great catches were made by the Buc outfield and the good guys walked away with zero errors to Brook's one. Not too shabby...looks like the #22 ranked Bucs are peaking at a good time. Let's all turn out and back the team to some more district victories. (Chris Cortez)

    By Independent Reporter- Chris Cortez

LEAGUE CITY, TX- The bad news is that Brazoswood traveled to Clear Creek territory Friday in the latest edition of the Brazoswood-Clear Creek shootout and left town with a recorded 4-3 loss.
The good news is that the #22 ranked Bucs fought the highly-touted #11 ranked Wildcats into extra innings and came within two outs of winning a highly controversial game.
Better news includes: Ryan Tepera putting 15 strikeouts on a high powered offense, the Bucs getting many solid hits off of Creek pitching, a long district schedule remaining, and a highly anticipated rematch with Creek at Wilson Field on Friday April 21st.
It's funny how things always seem to happen when one travels to League City, Texas. It is actually a very nice place with tree-lined streets, a great B-B-Q restaurant (Red River BBQ and Grill- where the Chili spud is a great deal for six bucks), a Whataburger and a Sonic right near the baseball field, a nice boardwalk with lots of expensive places to eat (the Kemah Boardwalk), and the humid chill that bites to the bone (probably from being so close to Galveston Bay). The schools are great and the people are nice and folksy. They even have a pretty good baseball team there......
    Yes.....a nice place.
So goes the setting for the first game in the 2006 series of the Brazoswood-Clear Creek Shootout.
The negative events of the night should not take away from an awesome performance by senior Buc hurler- Ryan Tepera. Tepera may as well have been pitching among the best of them in the Houston area, striking out fifteen batters (batters belonging to the #11 ranked team in the Houston Area) and Tepera was also hot at the plate, helping his own cause by hitting two doubles (RBI) and was so hot at one point that the Creek staff intentionally walked him in the bottom of the seventh. A performance like this should make Tepera a Houston 5A player of the week.
To his credit- starting pitcher Matt Birkenseher had a great night for Creek, putting in a full eight innings of work.
Aside from the blues from "old blue", the concern expressed most on that night was the unfortunate difficulty of officiating staff in controlling the overall order of the game.
Game wise, The Bucs jumped all over the fastball of Creek starter Matt Birkenseher early and often, jumping out to a 2-0 lead. Jake Fedorchak led off with a solid single, and Ryan Tepera nailed a double to left center scoring Fedorchak. Fedorchak would steal second and third on Creek errors and by his aggressiveness on the basepaths. Doug Stowers got a single on a Creek overthrow to Josh Darnell (scoring Fedorchak) and Austin Atkins drew a walk.
The Bucs finished their run tally in the top of the eighth. Tyler Kennedy led off with a walk. Royce Moore put down a sacrifice bunt. After a Dan Nisbett out at first, Cameren Sigh nailed an RBI double toward left field (Sigh almost nailed a home run in the bottom of the second). The Bucs led 3-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth.
Creek got an unearned run in the bottom of the third from Jereme Brooks. Brooks stole third on some overthrows and made it home on a passed ball. Later in the bottom of the fifth, Kevin Morales led off with a double. Brooks singled and then all heck broke loose. James Wooster hit into an out at first. Brooks got caught in a rundown between first and second and clearly was tagged out but was allowed to run to home after Morales scored.
Realistically folks, on the field, this game could have gone either way, and the game mercifully wound down in the bottom of the eighth. Leadoff Jereme Brooks popped out at shortstop for the first Creek out. Again, a controversial call centered around an out clearly being made at first but the Creek player (Wooster) was called safe....this would have given the Bucs their second out of the bottom of the eighth. Pablo Salinas doubled and to make a long story short, Creek barely survived the Bucs for the second straight time, crawling away with the 4-3 decision.
Well, this game had every ingredient included, and then some, in the series which dates back many years. The series is usually filled with one run wins by both sides including: the 5-4 squeaker win by the Cats at League City in 2005 (Bucs also hammered Creek 5-0 at Wilson Field in 2005).
In fact, it's important to remember that the Clear Creek varsity hasn't won a game at Wilson Field since all the way back to March 9, 2004, defeating the Bucs 4-1 in that match behind the arm of Aaron Brown. 2004 also saw the Bucs sweeping the series, winning 1-0 (at League City) and 10-6 at Wilson Field.
Nevertheless, Wildcat Stadium remains a unique place to watch a game. Clear Creek ISD is spending millions rebuilding Clear Creek High School and building the new League City High School on Palomino Lane. Perhaps a new baseball field could be a great thing also. The current lighting is an ongoing issue. Wildcat Stadium could do well with updated lighting perhaps enabling calls to be seen better. The current lighting appears antiquated and had several individual bulbs missing.
Aside from all the shenanigans folks, League City is still a fun place to visit...and when you save up a little cash go see the latest treats and eats at Kemah. I know I will.
See ya'll at Wilson Field for the rematch....Friday April 21st at 7:00 PM sharp. Pack the house and show 'em how to put on a game. -C. Cortez

    FRANKIE FIELD- Sugar Land, TX

In 2005, the Brazoswood Buccaneers fell to Clements at Wilson Field by a narrow margin of 4-3. Thus, it seemed only fitting that the Bucs returned the favor by winning 10-8 on Clements' home turf.
The Bucs were led by outstanding offensive production late in the top of the 7th inning just as Clements looked to pull off a win. With the bases loaded, Cameren Sigh nailed an Eric Adler pitch scoring 3 runs as the Bucs instantly tied the game. Hunter Ward then got a single on a Ranger dropped ball scoring Sigh. Kelly Schaefer would add insurance with a hard RBI single to left scoring Ward.
Ryan Tepera gained the starting nod on the hill for the Bucs.
Clements took an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning. Justin Bass would lead off with a single and Greg Hamre and Chris Braunsdorf would gain bases.
Ryan Hruska would be out on a fielder's choice at first, scoring Bass. Then, a Grant Friddell double to right would score Hamre and Braunsdorf. Clements would score their 4th run of the home inning on a passed ball scoring Chase Garcia.
The Bucs added a run in the top of the 2nd after Ryan Tepera (who was walked) scored on a Cody Murray double which was shot to right center. The score was 4-1 at this point.
Joseph Reyes was the catcher for the Bucs and did an outstanding job of blocking many potential passed balls.
Royce Moore would shut down Clements in the bottom of the 3rd starting with an outstanding Fedorchak catch of a Braunsdorf hit. Hruska would ground out, Friddell drew a walk, and Moore proceeded to strike out Jason Applewhite.
Both Clements and the Bucs would score two runs in the 4th inning. In the top of the 4th, Murray would be hit by a pitch, then Murray would take advantage of a Ranger balk, advancing to 2nd. Sigh would single, advancing Murray. Ward would be hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Jake Fedorchak. A Fedorchak RBI single would score Murray. With the bases loaded again, a run would be added on a balk.
Clements would add two more in the bottom of the 5th starting with a Matt Heitzer home run over left. Kevin Adams drew a BB. A Justin Bass liner which barely stayed inside the right field line would turn into a triple, scoring Adams. Clements seemed headed for victory with an 8-3 lead.
The Bucs would chip away at the lead in the top of the 6th. With Joe Reagan pitching, Dan Nisbett and Sigh would draw walks. Fedorchak singled with a solid shot past shortstop, loading up the bases. With Schaefer batting, a passed ball would score Nisbett. Schaefer would nail a shot and be thrown out at 1st, but Sigh would score from 3rd. Austin Atkins was the next batter, sending a shot to center which appeared on its way out of the ballpark but would be caught in center. In the bottom of the 6th, Dan Nisbett steadily shut down the Ranger bats striking out Hruska and Trey Cox and throwing out J-Dub Neely at 1st. Score: CHS- 8 B'wood- 5.
Now came the fateful 7th inning for the Bucs. Greg Hamre was the Ranger pitcher as Stowers led off with a single to right center. Tepera and Murray drew walks and Hamre would hit the showers as Eric Adler took the hill. After a Nisbett out, Cameren Sigh would step up and seal the deal with the base clearing triple much to the delight of the Buc faithful and quieting the "Clements heckler" in the process. Score: CHS- 8 B'wood- 10.
Doug Stowers would preserve the win, striking out Dylan Thorwaldson. Next, Heitzer (who was the Ranger power hitter) would only manage a groundout. Chip Ammons drew a walk giving the Rangers one last chance. Bass would hit his way into a rundown past second where he was tagged out and the game ended.
The Bucs performed flawlessly on defense committing zero errors to Clements' two errors.

Former 2004 Buc pitcher Kyle Watson moves on to play with a select group of talented young athletes as SFA restores baseball tradition.

    www.bucbaseball.org
    May 26, 2005

2004 Brazoswood grad Kyle Watson (a.k.a. "K-Dub") was recently recruited to play at Nacogdoches for the Stephen F. Austin State University Lumberjack baseball team of the Southland Athletic Conference for the upcoming season. Watson was a southpaw pitcher for the Region III Quarterfinalist Bucs and is the latest in a long line of former Brazoswood baseball alumni to sign with big name schools.
On July 9, 2004, SFA announced the return of baseball as an NCAA Division I sport. On Sept. 24, 2004, SFA Athletics Director Steve McCarty announced Donnie Watson as its new head baseball coach. Kyle will join a select group of young men recruited by Coach Watson who will be making history at SFA. Kyle is from Lake Jackson and is the son of Clay and Cindy Watson. Kyle is also a first cousin with 2005 Buc standouts: Matt Vern and '04 Buc- Kevin Croft.
When speaking about his experiences at Navarro, Kyle stated, "It was alright...it is a good baseball school and I was able to take many of my basic college courses there." Kyle had spoken to Coach Donnie Watson when Watson was still an assistant Coach at TCU. "Coach Watson is a great guy and spoke to me very directly and he was very friendly...he is also the NPA (National Pitching Association) person for Texas and that is a good thing."
The National Pitching Association was started 20 years ago to try and put baseball theory, baseball mechanics, fundamentals, sports science, nutritional science as well as psychological science together to build a better baseball player. NPA is dedicated to the education of baseball pitchers, their parents, and their coaches, so that they can pitch more effectively, stay healthier, develop a positive mental attitude, and a greater love of the game.
Also, Kyle was reminded that if Coach Watson had remained at TCU then perhaps Kyle may have played at TCU and joined his cousin Matt Vern, stating, "Yeah that would have been real cool."
Nevertheless, Kyle also attended pre-draft select camps for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Texas Rangers. "The camps were really good and they allowed me to meet some important people. I met some guys from the Yankees and met Randy Taylor the pitching scout for the Texas Rangers. All in all, I was able to get some very great and useful information."
In turn, when asked about his upcoming days at SFA it was noted that Kyle will be playing with an All-Star list of players selected from all over Texas which include some big name high schools and junior colleges. Kyle and the other recruits will be a part of history in the making as baseball returns to SFA. "It should be very exciting...SFA has a very good program with great facilities;" Kyle said, adding, "It's a great school."
At SFA, Kyle plans to major in kinesiology/sports science and he was also recruited by other colleges including SFA's Piney Woods rival- Sam Houston State University.
Kyle was asked to play in the highly competitive Cape Cod League this summer for the Brewster Whitecaps and will be heading north on June 11th.   Published by Chris Cortez

Lumberjack Baseball Adds 14 Players- signing class consists of 5 pitchers, 4 infielders, 3 outfielders and 2 catchers

    Dated- May 10, 2005

NACOGDOCHES,TX- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team continues to fill out its roster for the upcoming season as 14 players have announced their intentions of playing for the purple and white announced SFA head coach Donnie Watson Tuesday morning. This incoming crop of talent fills a need at every position for the Lumberjacks as it consists of four infielders, three outfielders, three right-handed pitchers and two left-handed pitchers and two catchers. The class also consists of eight incoming freshman and six junior college transfers.

"We had multiple holes to fill and had to make multiple commitments to fill those needs," said Watson. "Every player that we wanted we were fortunate to sign. SFA baseball added 14 players this spring to the 11 players signed during the early period, and I am pleased to announce the class of 2005-2006. It is an All-Star class made up of exceptional talent in the classroom and on the field. We added more pitching, speed, some of the best hitters in Texas and skilled defensive players behind the plate, on the infield and in the outfield."

Watson's group of young guns is a highly touted group that consists of some very impressive numbers. Longview's Sammy Hardwick has a career 24-4 (.857) record to date, while striking out 103 batters and holding opponents to a .237 batting average. Lake Jackson's Kyle Watson transfers to SFA from Navarro Junior College and was listed as one of the state's top 100 recruits coming out of high school after earning Baseball Factory All-American honors in 2003. Sugar Land's Eric Gregerson and Zach Gardner guided Clements High School to consecutive district titles. The two pitchers combined to go 18-5 (.783) in their final two seasons at Clements. Jared Schrom has compiled a 7-2 record on the hill this season, while hitting over .300 as a shortstop for Gregory-Portland High School.

The Jacks have also added four infielders in this class, two are a brother combination from Weatherford, Texas, by way of junior college. Buck Britton is a transfer who comes to Nacogdoches, from Lon Morris where he batted .350 with 10 doubles and 14 RBIs. Clay Britton was selected by the Detroit Tigers in 2003 and 2004 and was listed by ESPN as one of the top 10 College Outfield Prospects in the state of California. He currently leads Weatherford Junior College with a .389 batting average. Hardy Elkins is a 6-0, 185-pound Longview native that helped guide the Lobos to a second-place district finish as he set a school record .480 batting average with 19 RBIs. Gabriel Garcia is from Greenville, Texas and is being groomed to be an NCAA Division I shortstop with exceptional skills. Garcia could be a the sleeper of the class.

Watson also added two catchers in this class to help with the development of his pitching staff. Weatherford's Chase Cundiff is listed at 6-4, 210 and comes to Nacogdoches from Lon Morris Junior College. Cundiff is a unique catching prospect who throws right but bats left handed. Ryan Sinclair is one of three signees in this class from Longview, Texas. Just like Cundiff, Sinclair is a great athlete that will bring added size and strength to the `Jacks lineup at 6-1, 200. Sinclair is currently hitting over .400 and leads his team with more than 30 RBIs.

The three outfielders in this class are Kyle Freeman, David Jeans and Shane Smith. Smith will bring a lot of speed to the top of the `Jacks lineup. He earned all-district honors as a junior after hitting over .400 at the plate and going 18-of-18 on stolen base attempts. Smith has led L.D. Bell High School to a district title each of the past two seasons. In his two seasons at Texarkana College, Jeans is hitting over .300 with 45 stolen bases. Freeman was a two-time all-district player in high school who led Navarro Junior College to the Texas-New Mexico Region XIV East Zone Title after hitting .342 as a freshman. He earned first-team all-conference honors this past season after batting .469, with four homeruns and 26 RBIs from the leadoff spot.

"I am extremely proud of this group. It is a group that is committed to making history at SFA," said Watson. "It is a group committed to bringing the kind of baseball to our student body, faculty, alumni and community they will enjoy watching and deserve to see! Baseball in Texas is full of great baseball talent and thanks to Stephen F. Austin State University and its' great history and reputation it was easy to attract some of Texas' great talent to Nacogdoches, Texas."

The Lumberjacks' 14 signees now brings their total signing class to 25 players, joining Josh Bone, Richard Folmer, Angel Hernandez, Stephen Hill, Erich Lehmann, Jake Leonhardt, Zack Love, Lance Luetge, David Miller, Brian Steinocher and Vincent Wade who signed with SFA in November.

Former Buc- Brad Lincoln and UH Cougars Win Silver Glove Series Finale; Lincoln named to 2005 Sterling Bank Silver Glove All-Series Team

    May 17, 2005

(Courtesy UH Cougars.com) HOUSTON, TX- Freshman Kori Williams' pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Dustin Kingsbury from second base and lifted the University of Houston baseball team to a 3-2 win over No. 11 Rice on Tuesday night in the finale of the Sterling Bank Silver Glove Series at Cougar Field.

Kingsbury drew a walk to lead off the final frame and moved into scoring position following Brian Temko's sacrifice bunt. After an intentional pass to Matt Farrington, Williams fought off a 1-2 pitch from Rice reliever Lance Pendleton for a looping fly ball into shallow left field to score Kingsbury and hand the Cougars the win.

The Owls appeared to grab the momentum in the top of the eighth inning and after tying the game with back-to-back doubles from Joe Savery and Adam Rodgers to lead off the frame. Rice continued to threaten with the go-ahead run on third base with two outs, but junior reliever Justin Vaclavik forced Danny Lehmann to fly out to left field to end the threat.

With the win, the Cougars avoided the Series sweep at the hands of the Owls and moved to the .500 mark at 26-26 for the first time all season. Rice dropped to 36-16 overall with the loss.

Junior outfielder Travis Tully and freshman infielder Bryan Tully, no relation, each went 2-for-4 to pace the Cougar offense, which outhit Rice 7-4.

Savery went 2-for-4 with two runs and a pair of doubles to lead the Owls.

Vaclavik collected the win and improved to 4-2 after pitching 1.1 innings of perfect relief. Pendleton dropped to 4-3 after giving up one run off two hits with a strikeout and two walks in 1.1 innings of work.

UH freshman starter (former Clear Creek Wildcat '04) Aaron Brown did not pick up the decision but was impressive in the no decision. The League City, Texas, native scattered two runs off three hits with four strikeouts in a career-best seven innings during his fifth straight midweek start.

The Cougars placed five players on the All-Series team with pitcher Kevin Roberts, first baseman Brad Lincoln, second baseman Bryan Pounds, third baseman Stephen Whalen and Travis Tully being named to the squad. Tully was named to the All-Series Team for the second time after being honored in 2003.

Rice infielder Greg Buchanan was honored as the Series' Most Outstanding Player.

The Cougars wrap up their regular season when they play host to Southern Miss in a Conference USA series starting Thursday at Cougar Field. That series begins with 7 p.m. games on Thursday and Friday before wrapping up at 1 p.m., Saturday.

Thursday's and Friday's games can be heard live on KLVL 1480 AM while Saturday's game will be broadcast on KGBC 1540 AM. All three games can be heard live on the Internet at www.UHCougars.com with former UH letterwinners Nick Torina and Pat Cauley calling all the action. In addition, fans can follow all the play-by-play action by clicking on the Gametracker link at www.UHCougars.com.

With this being the final weekend of Conference USA play, fans and media should note that the series was moved up a day earlier than the regular schedule to accommodate team travel to the 2005 C-USA Tournament.

The Cougars grabbed the lead in the fourth inning with a pair of runs. After Roberts was hit by a pitch, Lincoln blasted an 0-1 offering from Rice starter Bobby Bell over the left-field wall.

The score stayed that way until the sixth inning when Rice cut the lead in half, thanks to an RBI-single to right field from Adam Hale.

The Bucs controlled the tempo of the game against Alvin and wounded up getting themselves into a tie for the 24-5A lead with Clear Lake. Clear Lake defeated the Bucs on March 18, 2005 at Clute behind a late seventh inning rally and some key hits by Chris Dinges and Jordan Pennington. The Falcons also pitched freshman- Jared Cosart and Mike Cueto to defeat the Bucs. Lake is coming off a 9-2 decisive victory over Pearland and has seen the return of Dinges who was injured two weeks ago in an accident where he was hit in the eye by a baseball thrown by a team mate as the team was running off the field.
Well, the Bucs beat Alvin with Murphy's complete game effort and with offensive production in the bottom of the fourth inning. Alvin drew first blood in the top of the third. Travis Snider got an RBI double scoring Leo Delgado giving the Jackets the 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, after Matt Vern grounded out, Dustin Damian launched a solo home run off Delgado (pitching in relief of Travis Jenkins) which cleared the left field fence at Wilson Field with room to spare. Tim Jones nailed a high fly out at right, and then Ryan Tepera singled. Tepera stole second and Royce Moore came up to bat. Moore quickly powered the game-winning RBI double to right, scoring Tepera. Kelly Schaefer singled and Caleb Villareal ended the side with a strikeout.
The Bucs didn't go on a hitting spree but got what they needed to seal a victory. Other key hits in the game included: a Jake Fedorchak single in the first inning, a solid Vern double along the third base line in the fifth, and Murphy helping his cause on offense with a single in the sixth inning (Josh Rambo was the courtesy runner for Murphy and made a key steal).
Come out to Cobb Field at Clear Lake Tuesday April 12th to watch a battle for the 24-5A lead. Come out and support the Bucs.

Matt Vern nailed a key double in the bottom of the third inning and Dustin Damian notched 9 K's to assist a total team effort to defeat the feisty Clear Creek Wildcats 5-0. Creek falls to 3-3 in D 24-5A while the Bucs climb to 13-7 overall, and 4-2 in district. The Bucs have now won three out of the last four meetings against Creek in the annual 24-5A Gulf Coast shootout.
The Bucs used spread out offense, scoring in the bottom of the third, fourth, and sixth innings for the key win.
In the bottom of the third, Matt Vern quickly announced his prescence to Trey Garcia by launching an RBI double to center scoring Kent Benedict who had walked....Bucs-1 Creek- 0. Kelly Schaefer then hit a sac bunt, and a passed ball later, Vern scored making it Bucs-2 Creek- 0. Royce Moore stepped up and plated Schaefer making the score Bucs- 3 Creek- 0.
The Bucs scored again in the fourth making it 4-0 and by the bottom of the sixth continued the fireworks before many stunned Creek fans.
In the bottom of the sixth, Fedorchak drove a towering shot which appeared to have a hot date with the Clute Pool. Luckily for Creek, the ball dropped into an F-8 out. Damian notched a key double to right center and Josh Rambo was the courtesy runner for Damian. Rambo stole third base and a Benedict bunt and a Creek throwing error later, score Bucs- 5 Cats- 0. Logan Corbin was the lone bright spot for Clear Creek and he had two doubles and was the only Creek player to hit. The Bucs march on with a date with the Jackets of Alvin Friday at 7:30 P.M. at Wilson Field.

The Bucs took their show on the road and continued their winning ways against Brazoria County rival Pearland, winning 6-4 Tuesday night. Royce Moore came up with a key double in the top of the sixth inning off of Oiler starter Chad Buckmaster clearing out the bases and scoring Kent Benedict, Matt Vern, and Tim Jones.
The Moore shot gave the Bucs the insurance they needed to fend off a big Pearland threat in the bottom of the seventh inning and to take a key district win.
In turn, the Dustin "Pop" Damian show rambled on as Damian notched 7 strikeouts in 6 1/3 solid innings of work. Murphy relieved Damian and preserved the victory.
The Bucs defeated the Oilers in two games in 2004's Region III bi-district series. The last time the Bucs visited Pearland, the score was 15-2, Bucs. Well as expected, the score was much closer this time around with the Bucs getting clutch hits and a clutch pitching performance by Damian.
Pearland drew first blood in the bottom of the first inning, scoring a run. The Bucs came back in the top of the third. Cullen Williams and Ryan Tepera were both hit by pitches and both were advanced on a balk. Jake Fedorchak grounded out to second scoring Williams.
In the top of the fifth, Tim Jones got things started with a solid double, and was advanced on a passed ball. Moore got to first on an Aaron Bradley throwing error scoring Jones. Moore made it to second base and Williams hit into a ground out. Tepera then singled scoring Moore. Fedorchak grounded out to third, and Tepera got out heading to third ending the side.
Next, in the top of the sixth, Benedict singled, then Vern walked. Damian hit into an F-8, but not in vain, as Benedict advanced. Jones then got hit by a pitch advancing Vern. With Daniel Lopez now in for Buckmaster, Moore took control with his key double putting the Bucs up 6-1 heading into the game's final frame.
Not going gently into the good night, Pearland mounted a final rally in the bottom of the seventh. Mike Speciale singled and Andy Berry popped out. Matt Murphy then got hit by a pitch, concluding another dominant performance by Damian. Ryan Murphy was now pitching for the Bucs. Justin Cockrell drew a walk, loading the bases for the Oilers. on a Taylor Lobb single, Speciale scored. Matt Murphy advanced to third scoring on a Benedict miscue. Cockrell ended up at third and Lobb at second. Nick Long would single in Cockrell drawing the Oilers to within an upset victory. Aaron Varnum flied out to right, advancing Lobb to third. With the potential tying run at the plate in Aaron Bradley, Murphy calmy and cooly struck out Bradley sealing victory for the Bucs.

The Brazoswood Bucs defeated the Galveston Ball Tors 8-0 Thursday night behind a big second inning and behind the solid leadership of senior Ryan Murphy.
The Bucs improve to 11-6 overall and 2-2 in D 24-5A action and effectively stopped a 2-game district skid where the Bucs have been falling in close games. It was also the first shutout for the Bucs since defeating Alvin 9-0 at Alvin on March 15th.
First, in the bottom of the second, Tim Jones walked and Kelly Schaefer was hit by a pitch. Royce Moore then hit into a fielder's choice (getting a hit) where the play was made at third. Caleb Villareal drew a walk, loading the bases. With Ryan Tepera now at bat and on his last strike, the Ball catcher passed a Whidden pitch, enabling Schaefer to score, and allowing Tepera to reach first. Bases loaded again, and Jake Fedorchak steps up to the plate.
Fedorchak has been "the man with the plan" for the Bucs and has been on a hot streak as of late...(getting a triple off James Ferguson at Clear Brook and homering at the Brazoswood Tournament against NB Canyon). True to form, Fedorchak nailed a 4-RBI blast over Wilson Field's left center wall, making the score 5-0 Bucs.
Brazoswood scored its other runs in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Kent Benedict singled to third, scoring Fedorchak who had been hit by a pitch and stole second base.
The last two runs were scored in a lucrative sixth for the Bucs. With Tyson Arnold now pitching for Ball, Damian drew a walk. Matt Benavides came in to courtesy run for Damian. Benedict was struck out bringing up Matt Vern. "Niner" Vern proceeded to smash a 1-RBI double into left field, scoring Benavides. Next, Tim Jones nailed a shot to Montalbano in left where the ball deflected off his glove. Jones took two bases and scored a run. Ivan Martinez drew a walk, and, after a Moore K, the side ended when Villareal hit into an out at second.
The game ended on some great defensive play by Brazoswood. The Bucs turned their third double play of the night getting two outs in the top of the seventh. On the last play, Kent Benedict got the last Ball runner out in a rundown between third and second base.
To their credit, the young Tors displayed some positive things, such as: hitting and team speed. The Tors continued to connect at the plate even though many potential hits were turned into outs. Ball also displayed some speed on the basepaths, steadily trying to gain extra bases on routine hits.
Brazoswood now takes on Pearland in a key 24-5A battle Tuesday March 29 at 7:30 pm at Pearland. If we all remember, the last time the Bucs played the Oilers at their house (2004 B-district) things were pretty difficult in a 15-2 Buc win....and one can bet the Oilers want some payback. That is why when you go to Pearland...wear your favorite blue or Buc T-shirt and let everybody know who you are! Go Bucs!!

James Ferguson pitched a complete game and the Clear Brook Wolverines capitalized in the third inning to take the first meeting between themselves and the Bucs by a score of 3-1 Tuesday night at Clear Brook Field.
Clear Brook improves to 9-8 overall and 2-1 in district 24-5A action while the Bucs slip a notch to 10-6 overall and 1-2 in 24-5A action.
Brazoswood's Tim Jones and Dustin Damian pitched excellent games but Brook took advantage of some Buc defensive miscues in the bottom of the third inning. Brook also displayed timely defense to preserve their win.
The first and second innings saw B'wood and Clear Brook both exchange double plays with the score 0-0 heading into the third.
Then, in the top of the third, Brazoswood's Jake Fedorchak led off with a standup triple off the left center field wall. Fedorchak was a hero for the Bucs in the Gulf Coast Invitational, hitting a 3-run homerun against Canyon...and has been on a hot streak. Next, Ryan Tepera grounded out at first, scoring Fedorchak.
Kent Benedict was hit by a Ferguson pitch, and Matt Vern singled. After a Dustin Damian strikeout, Kent Benedict got caught in a rundown off second base for the ensuing out.
Brook led off the bottom of the third with an Efrain Gonzales walk. Benito Gonzalez was the first Brook out, hitting to pitcher Jones who threw to Damian at first. Dane Yelovich got to first base on a bloop single.
Next, David Prahm nailed a single into right field making the score 1-1. Steven Buchanan then hit to Brazoswood second baseman Kelly Schaefer who misjudged the catch allowing Yelovich and Prahm to score. Brook ended the inning on consecutive groundouts by Will O' Sullivan and Jeff Sciba. Brook lead, 3-1.
The Bucs had one last chance to come back in the top of the seventh. Fedorchak drew a walk, bringing up Tepera, who went down on strikes. Fedorchak then attempted a steal and was thrown out at second base. Last, Benedict nailed a shot to center which was caught for the game ending out.
Let's remember that as of the Galveston Ball game last year at this time on March 19, 2004, that the Bucs were 10-5 overall and 1-2 in district. Well in 2005, aside from tough matches with Flower Mound Marcus and Lufkin, the Bucs have only lost by slim margins of 4-3 (Santa Fe), 4-3 (Clements), 5-2 (Clear Lake), and 3-1 (Clear Brook). Three of those losses were VERY late in the game (including the 4-3 loss to #9 state-ranked Clements), and were it not for a few lucky bunts, some defensive bad luck, and some lucky breaks for the opponent, the Bucs could easily be 14-2 right now. Well you can bet that just like Rocky Balboa, the Bucs will get motivated and turn up the heat after taking some punches.
On a positive note for the Bucs, the Clear Creek Wildcats took their first district loss of the season Tuesday night, getting pounded 11-3 by the Clear Lake Falcons at League City. Lake is now 2-0 in district play while Creek falls to 1-1. (Creek recently beat Alvin 6-5 last week). Also on March 22nd, Pearland got by Galveston Ball 9-6.
The Bucs take on Ball next at Wilson Field this Thursday March 24th, and Brook travels to rival Clear Creek on the same night in key 24-5A battles. Lets make some noise!!

Ryan Murphy pitched a brilliant game and the Bucs made several fine defensive efforts but alas, were unable to wake up the bats en-route to a 5-2 loss to Clear Lake on a cool breezy Friday night before a jam-packed home crowd at Clute's Wilson Field.
The win was Lake's first district win of the season, and the first district loss for the Bucs in a still very young season. It is like they say..."you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs" and if making the playoffs is the omelette, then Clear Lake was a broken egg for the Bucs on Friday night.
Lake improves to 8-7 overall, and 1-1 in district 24-5A action. The Bucs slip a bit to 10-5 overall, and 1-1 in district play.
Lake's Chris Dinges blew open a neck and neck game in the top of the seventh inning by nailing a 2 RBI triple off Brazoswood's Ryan Tepera, scoring Kyle Flynn and Adam Wolfe to seal the 5-2 win for the Falcons.
Lake was up 1-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning. Cameron Johnson doubled to left center and Flynn laid down a sacrifice bunt helping Johnson to advance to third. Dinges singled up second base scoring Johnson. In the bottom of the third, Brazoswood countered with two runs. Tepera, Kent Benedict, and Matt Vern drew walks loading the bases. Dustin Damian hit a chopper up the middle where the force play was attempted at home. On a passed ball, two Buc runs plated making the score: 2-1 Brazoswood.
Top of the sixth, Lake's Richard Porfirio singles off Murphy and Jordan Pennington then nailed a double to right field, scoring Porfirio. Lake tied it 2-2.
In the top of the seventh, Lake pulled ahead starting with a Cameron Johnson single from a Tepera error. Flynn laid down a wirey bunt, making it to first and advancing Johnson. Wolfe sent a shot to left, scoring Johnson. Score was now 3-2, Lake.
At this time, Murphy was sent to the showers after a fine pitching performance and was razor-thin close to pitching a complete game.
With Tepera now pitching for the Bucs, Dinges hit a triple scoring Flynn and Wolfe, making it 5-2, Lake. The Bucs went down on back to back pop outs and a K to end the game. Lake next takes on cross-town rival Clear Creek March 22. Creek beat Alvin 6-5 at League City on Friday night in a close battle. Your Buccaneers travel to play the Clear Brook Wolverines in Friendswood on March 22nd. Be there or be square.

Dustin Damian and Ryan Tepera among Bucs who enjoyed big nights in D24-5A opener

Brazoswood's Dustin Damian just came off a great series after being named the Gulf Coast Invitational MVP this past weekend (where the Bucs won their home tournament for the third year in a row).
In turn, fellow Buccaneer Ryan Murphy had already no-hit Santa Fe last week, as Damian made a bid to duplicate the feat keeping a no-hitter going against the formidable Alvin YellowJackets through 6 innings Tuesday March 15, 2005 at Alvin's Nolan Ryan Field.
Alvin's Daniel Fernandez broke up the no-hitter in the bottom of the 6th with a lead-off double to center which would be the only Jacket hit of the night.
On an offensive note for the Bucs, it was a huge night as several Bucs got in on the action and Ryan Tepera had a wild night at the plate getting a hit in every one of his at bats and generating some RBIs for the team.
The Bucs' big innings were the 4th and 5th. Top of the 4th, Kelly Schaefer gets the leadoff single. Josh Rambo and Jake Fedorchak K'd and Ryan Tepera got a single. Kent Benedict singled scoring Schaefer. With Tepera on lead, Matt Vern and Dustin Damian get walked scoring Tepera. At this time Daniel Deleon was put in for the Jackets as Cullen Williams hit into an F-8.
With a 3-0 lead, the Bucs blew open the 5th inning with a Tim Jones single, a Schaefer single, and a Matt Benavides double...pushing the score to 5-0. Ryan Tepera reached first on a Jacket error, scoring Benavides and Benedict drew a walk. Matt "Niner" Vern nailed a single to left field scoring Tepera and Benedict making the score 8-0 B'wood.
TCU recruit Matt Vern continued his heroics in the top of the 7th... smashing a standup triple to center. The Bucs loaded the bases after Damian AND Schaefer got hit by pitches, and Matt Benavides got to first on an Alvin error. On a passed ball, Vern stole home making it 9-0.
The Bucs improved to 10-4 overall and 1-0 in district 24-5A action.
The Bucs take on Clear Lake in another key 24-5A match March 18, 2005 at Wilson Field in Clute, TX.

Jake Fedorchak put this game out of reach and pitcher Ryan Tepera controlled much of the game tempo enabling the Bucs to win the Gulf Coast Invitational at their own house, defeating the New Braunfels Canyon Cougars, 10-3.
The Bucs are now 9-4 on the year as district play begins. The Gulf Coast Invitational grew this year and has also been known as the Brazosport ISD Classic and as the Brazoswood Tournament. The Bucs also won its 2003 home tournament. The Bucs won last year's Brazosport ISD Tournament by defeating Corpus Christi Carroll 9-0.
Fedorchak had a monster game for the Bucs, expressing a three-RBI home run delivery over the blue monster's left field wall to the delight of the home crowd. The key shot came in the huge third inning where the Bucs put Canyon away.
"TP" Ryan Tepera was the winning pitcher for the Bucs tossing 5 1/3 innings allowing 6 hits and getting 6 K's. Dustin Damian followed Tepera and Murphy closed out the game in the 7th. Losing pitcher was Cameron Henk.
Canyon is a new high school in the New Braunfels area and is in the Comal ISD. The Cougars compete in district 27-4A.

Brazoswood fell to a steady-hitting Lufkin Panther team 5-2 on a cold Friday night at the Beaumont West Brook Classic late game.
The emotion-charged game was #28 area- ranked Lufkin's first win of the tourney and Brazoswood's first loss of the tourney.
The Bucs slipped to 4-3 overall on the young season.
Despite the loss, Brazoswood's Matt Vern nailed a monster two-run homerun blast over West Brook's left field fence in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Lufkin jumped out to a 5-0 lead behind a key hit from senior Lufkin pitcher- Drew Ormsby. With the score already 2-0, Ormsby hit a chopper to Ryan Tepera who overthrew Cullen Williams at first base. Panthers: Blake Williams and Rafeal Thomas scored making it 4-0. Later in the top of the fourth Chris McClendon nailed a standup triple to center and Thomas got a single up the third base line scoring McClendon. Lufkin went up 5-0.
To his credit, Ormsby had his stuff on target...using a 2/3 turn (almost side-armming it) breaking pitch which was very effective despite some questionable calls and close calls at hitting Buc batters. Ormsby actually had a no-hitter going through 5 innings until Cullen Williams effectively put an end to that with a solid double to center field in the bottom of the sixth.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Bucs made the most of their last at bat. Kent Benedict led off with a single. Next, Matt Vern stepped up and nailed the monster shot off Ormsby also bringing in Benedict. Dustin Damian hit to right field for the first out. Next, Tim Jones grounded out for the second out. Designated-hitter Kelly Schaefer kept the Bucs hopes alive with a key single down the third base line. Cullen Williams nailed a shot to center which was caught for the final out.
Buc pitcher Kelly Schaefer looked outstanding in 3 2/3 innings of work allowing no runs and striking out 7 Panthers. Schaefer came on in relief of Ryan Murphy- who shut down Port Neches-Groves in the early game.

The Bucs defeated the #13 state ranked (Class 4A) Port Neches-Groves Indians 5-3 Friday March 4, 2005 at the Beaumont West Brook Classic. The win was Brazoswood's second of the tournament as the Bucs improve to 4-2 overall on the young season.
The Indians were 36-5 in 2004 and advanced all the way to the State 4A Semifinals in Round Rock, losing 4-0 to State Champ Boerne. In 2004, the Bucs defeated PN-G 1-0 at the Santa Fe Tournament. Dustin Damian was the hero in that game knocking in the winning run.
Well, 2005 was a different story and the Bucs quickly worked to get ahead of the Indians. The Bucs jumped on losing pitcher- Zack Harwood and PN-G early, building a 4-0 lead by the bottom of the first inning. First, Ryan Tepera got a single. Next, Kent Benedict hit into a fielder's choice for the first Buc out. Matt Vern was hit by the pitch, and Dustin Damian nailed a standup double scoring Tepera and Vern. Tim Jones then got a single down the third base line. Kelly Schaefer also got a single up second. After an Austin Atkins strikeout, Jacob Fedorchak nailed a standup double. The Bucs went up 4-0.
PN-G wouldn't go down idle and got three runs back quickly by the top of the second. Cole Johnson and Chris Hearn singled. Next, Darrell Bass walked, loading the bases. Bryce Burnett then hit a two-out double scoring the runners and bringing the Indians to within 4-3.
In the fifth, a Jacob Fedorchak single to center field scored Royce Moore making it Bucs- 5, PN-G- 3. By the top of the sixth, Jones faced Aaron Deluna who singled. On the next play, Taylor McInnis hit into a key double play by Kelly Schaefer...followed by a Cole Johnson out to center. Murphy shut the Indians down in the seventh. Bass popped out to right, Deluna K'd, and Blake Buchanan grounded out. Key hits for the game included the Damian double, key hits by Fedorchak, including the stand up double and center field single.

Brazoswood ace Dustin Damian handcuffed Marshall in a brilliant display of systematic fundamental pitching to dismantle the Mavs en-route to an 8-0 Buc victory. Damian just about went the distance putting in 5 innings of work for the win. Ryan Tepera came in for the sixth inning as the #24 ranked Bucs (3-2) won their first game of the 2005 West Brook Classic.
The first 3 innings of the game were pretty much a duel between Damian and Scott Adair.
Slugger- Matt Vern ignited the Bucs in the fourth, getting a standup triple which was followed by a Damian single. Austin Atkins popped out to catcher, Tim Jones got a single, and Ryan Tepera got a solid double. In the fourth, the Bucs scored 2 runs, and scored 1 in the 5th.
Brazoswood exploded for 5 unanswered runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. First, Tim Jones hit into a 4-3 groundout. Tepera then hit into an out at first. Next, Caleb Villareal was hit hard by Adair (Adair's third) and took first. Ivan Martinez got a solid double and Kent Benedict nailed a two RBI single to right field. Amazingly, Jacob Fedorchak stole home plate as the Mav catcher was caught off guard. By this time the score was 8-0 in the Bucs' favor as the game was called on run-rule.

Yogi Berra once stated, "It ain't over till it's over" and the Buccaneers were reminded of the old cliche after the #9 state-ranked Clements Rangers came back from a 3-1 deficit after five innings of play to knot the score 3-3 heading into the decisive seventh inning. There in the seventh, the Rangers grabbed the victory winning 4-3 over the Bucs.
Not to offend Yogi, but the Bucs certainly did put a scare into the 2004 Region III Semifinalist Rangers in the bottom of the sixth.
First, Matt Benavides was hit by a Ryan Ferguson pitch. Then, Caleb Villareal bunted over Ferguson, making it to first base and advancing Benavides. Ryan Tepera hit to second base where the fielder's choice was made leaving Bucs on the corners. After a Jacob Fedorchak strikeout, Kent Benedict also got hit by a pitch loading the bases. At this time slugger Matt Vern came up to bat amid a rowdy home crowd and tension so thick you could cut it with a butter knife. Well, luckily for the Rangers, Vern nailed a laser shot right to Clements' second baseman...ending the inning.
Dustin Damian pitched the seventh in relief of Tim Jones. Clements got the go ahead run after a series of walks. Riley Curry lead off and walked. Justin Bass made it to 1B on a bobble, and Dane Nielsen got out. Chris Braunsdorf then struck out. With the score 3-3 and two outs, Ryan Ferguson walked after a close count scoring Curry and putting Clements ahead 4-3. Wayo DeLaChica nailed a towering shot to Tim Jones who made a spectacular catch to close out the order.
In the end, Damian, Jones, and Cullen Williams were retired on K's ending the game. Ryan Murphy started the first three innings for the Bucs.

Bucs "sun-burned" by Santa Fe, 4-3

The Brazoswood Buccaneers are accustomed to good things at the Santa Fe Tournament which usually features some of the better 4A and 5A teams around.
Thus, it is hard to play when Mother Nature decides not to cooperate with you, as much of the 2005 Santa Fe Tournament was called off due to rain. The Bucs were rained out Thursday and on Friday fell to the Santa Fe Indians 4-3. Indian, Jordy Faust, popped a ball to center which got affected by the sun resulting in Faust reaching second. Brent Schoppe advanced to third. Garrett Teegarden hit a line drive to left center getting two runs and the 4-3 win over the Bucs (0-1).
Kelly Schaefer pitched the first four innings for the Bucs and Ryan Tepera pitched the last three, taking the loss.
Santa Fe has not won their own tournament since 1999 and have been unlucky until now against the Bucs.
The Bucs and Bay City played at Wilson Field 7P. Friday and the Bucs won that matchup, 6-1, winning their first game of the year (Bucs went to 1-1). Santa Fe defeated Kinkaid 6-5 in the late game and lost to Bay City 8-5 on Saturday. Early Saturday, the Bucs caged the Cougars of La Marque, 10-2, with Royce Moore going the distance in a complete game for the Bucs (B'wood improves to 2-1). The Bucs were scheduled to play Bay City Saturday at 2:30P. La Marque, Kinkaid, and the Bucs left for home after the tournament was cancelled due to weather.

Kelly Schaefer battles the Knights
Saturday, February 19
Brazoswood "wins" scrimmage vs. Elkins 8-3

The Buccaneer bats lit up the "Knights" at the Wilson Field scrimmage Friday February 19th, 2005 ending the scrimmage with an 8-3 run tally over Elkins. The Bucs played Elkins last year at Elkins Field and in that battle it was the Knights who put up the offense. That Knight team had the likes of Spencer Jackson and Matt Carpenter who are now at Texas Christian.
Pitcher- Dustin "Pop" Damian started on the hill for the Bucs, garnering 6 k's through about three Elkins batting cycles.
Elkins got the first run on their first batting cycle. Damian struck out the first Knight, then gave up a single to Logan Miller. Next, Carlos Hereaud singled up the 3B line scoring Miller. Damian struck out the next batter, and got out of the order with the last out at 2B.
The Bucs first batting series saw Tim Jones deliver a solid shot into Knights' third baseman Logan Miller for the first out. Ryan Tepera and Matt Vern drew walks placing runners on first and second. Damian and Schaefer went down on strikes ending the order.
Elkins next at bat saw David Mickley single up the middle with the next three batters quickly going down on two k's and a pop out at center.
On the next Buc batting order things got started offensively after Austin Atkins and Royce Moore hit into groundouts. Cullen Williams walked (Jonathan Spoon was the pinch runner), and Ivan Martinez hit a powerful double up the 1B line. Jake Fedorchak drew a walk and Matt Benavides hit a bloop shot to the pitcher scoring Spoon.
The Knights pushed the run tally to 2-2 midway towards the scrimmage and Kelly Schaefer was the next Buc pitcher after Damian.
The Bucs generated a rally with Schafer drawing a walk. Austin Atkins popped out to 3B, and Royce Moore singled up the middle, scoring Schaefer. Schaefer had about 5 k's.
Elkins countered with pitcher Alex Prusinski later in the scrimmage.
The Bucs rallied again starting with a Matt Benavides out at 1B. Tim Jones powered his way toward a triple followed by a Tepera single up 3B (Jones scored). Matt Vern, Damian, and Schaefer walked scoring Tepera.
With Elkins up, Tepera made a great catch in shallow left field. The next Knight hit to Michael Pace who made a great catch at 1B. Kyle Bates singled to right followed by a Knight strikeout.
Through the course of the scrimmage the Bucs were able to control the Knights defensively with several great catches made by the infield and some great grabs by centerfielder Tim Jones.
Later, Buc pitchers included Ryan Murphy and Ryan Tepera. Murphy easily got the Bucs through a Knight batting order with 3 k's and 1 walk. By that time the run tally was 8-3.
To Elkins credit, the young 2005 Knights team displayed great individual skill and athleticism and have a bright future ahead. Carlos Hereaud is a Houston Cougar recruit and demonstrated his talent.

The scrimmage matched the #13 (Bellaire) and #22 (B'wood) area ranked programs. The Bucs looked solid especially early on with Ryan Murphy and Tim Jones starting on the hill for the Bucs. Both teams tried out many different looks and played with roster changes through the course of the game. The scrimmage lasted from 4 to 9 p.m. and at last glance the run total had Bellaire ahead something like 7-2.
Nevertheless, the game was much closer than indicated by the "score" with some Bellaire runs created by Buc errors. These errors are common in early season matchups. The Buc returners looked solid overall and some of the newcomers displayed flashes of promise throughout the scrimmage.
Murphy, Jones, Dustin Damian, and Matt Vern looked solid on the mound. Murphy led off followed by Jones, Damian and Vern. Jones had at least 5 k's and 3 walks, Damian had at least 2 k's and 2 walks. Defensively, Vern and Austin Atkins performed well at catcher, blocking some errant pitches that could have caused trouble for the team. Ryan Tepera made a sportsreel-worthy snag at shortstop ending an inning. Cullen Williams displayed some power (although popping out), the shots were delivered well into the outfield.
All in all, it was a good scrimmage against an old rival for the Bucs. Brazoswood-Belllaire have a history that goes back many years including classic matchups shared between Coach Manuel and Buc Coach Bill Poland.
On a miscellaneous note, the spanking new athletic/concession facility got baptized getting hit with foul balls. Fan turnout was great for the Bucs, with well over fifty people in attendance inspite of the chill that crept up on a sunny afternoon.   Next game is Friday February 18th's scrimmage with Elkins at 4:30 at Wilson Field.
