Coach Williams reflects on the team's Region III Semifinal run of 2003:
2003 marked the second straight year Coach Williams was named Brazoria County's top coach. Coach Williams claimed his first coach-of-the-year award two seasons ago when his Bucs led area baseball fans on a thrilling ride that won't soon be forgotten.
That year, Brazoswood won its last six contests to claim the final postseason spot. The Bucs went on to advance to the Region III Quarterfinals before falling to District 24-5A rival Clear Creek in three heart-stopping games.
This past season, the Bucs made even bigger strides.
Not only did they win the 24-5A title outright, they then defeated Baytown Lee and Galveston Ball in playoff series to earn the memorable berth against defending champ Elkins.
Knowing how close the Bucs came to knocking down the state champion is a difficult pill for Williams to swallow. But The Bucs' coach still smiles when he reminisces about the team's playoff run.
"We didn't get as far as I think we could have, but that's just the game of baseball," Williams said. "But I'm proud of every kid on the team. The kids played hard. It was a lot of fun."
Williams is quick to downplay any honor that he has received as a result of his team's success.
"When you have these kinds of kids, it makes my job easy," Williams said. "A coach getting an award is just a reflection of the team."
But winning any award for Brazoswood is something the Buc coach takes a large amount of pride in.
Williams graduated from Brazoswood in 1979 and, after attending college, came back to work for BISD and has been here ever since. He just completed his fourth season as the head baseball coach.
With more than 20 years of loyalty to Brazoswood, it's no wonder that Williams takes a little extra pride when he receives an accomplishment while wearing a Buc uniform.
"It takes time to build up real pride and deep feelings for a school," Williams said. "I don't have to build it up here, it's already there. I'm proud to be a Buccaneer and I always will be."
