Brazosport Exporters: Oakes and Tracy Scholarships
The Billy Oakes Scholarship
The Exporter Baseball Program would like to recognize the Salt Grass Chapter of Officials. In 2009, the Salt Grass Chapter put on the first Annual Billy Oakes Scholarship Baseball Tournament. Over the three days of play, the officials of the chapter work 10 – 15 games, all for free. Through their efforts, and the contributions of generous individuals, businesses, and fans, the group raises money to offer scholarships to student athletes from Brazosport, Brazoswood, Brazosport Christian, Boling, Danbury, Sweeny, Columbia, and Needeville. On behalf of Exporter Baseball and Brazosport High School, we would like to thank these men for their time and efforts as they work to support our young people and better the community at large.

The John Tracy Memorial Scholarship
The John Tracy Scholarship was established in 2005 as a tribute to one of our community’s most outstanding citizens. John lived in Brazoria County all his life and graduated from Brazosport High in 1959. He coached summer baseball for 18 years beginning with Pee Wee and Babe Ruth, and then started an American Legion team which included boys from the Greater Brazosport Area. John was also an avid salt water fisherman. In 2006, the John Tracy Scholarship began being awarded to one senior baseball player from Brazosport High School, as well as one from Brazoswood High School. Currently, funds for the scholarships come from the sales of raffle tickets, shirts, caps, koozies and donations each year during the John Tracy Memorial Fishing Tournament. The first scholarship was issued in the amount of $500. Due to the success of the fishing tournament, the scholarship amount was increased to $1,000 in 2007. Beginning in 2010, the Tracy Family began offering four scholarships, one each to a baseball player from Brazoswood and Brazosport, as well as one each to a softball player from the Bucs and Lady Ships.
