Blaze 10u win Rockaway Tournament
The Branchburg Blaze 10u squad won its first tournament championship of the year in Rockaway over Memorial Day weekend. For the first time in club history, a Blaze team won its first tournament of the year. This Blaze team is mostly comprised of young ladies playing travel softball for the first time. They managed to win four out of six games overall including a perfecta 3-0 record on Sunday to bring home the championship trophy in the B bracket. Sunday play started at 8AM with Alexa Arnold on the mound against Sparta. Alexa pitched three shut out innings with six strikeouts. Amanda Carisone came in and finished it out with two more scoreless innings and four strikeouts. The Blaze offense scored nine runs to secure the victory. The second game on Sunday proved to be a very close and well played game by both squads. The Blaze played the tournament host team, Rockaway Rampage, with one run deciding the outcome. Carisone pitched the game, scattering four hits with thirteen strikeouts and two earned runs for the victory. The dramatics came in the fourth inning when Arnold walked to lead off the inning, followed by a well executed sacrifice bunt by Colleen Murphy. Jenna Swartz hit a line single to tie the game followed by a two run home run from Meghan Kovac to seal the victory. The Blaze defense in this game was outstanding as well with Melissa Weigartner and Rachael Cooley playing the outfield along with Rebecca Cooley who made two key catches in right field. After two victories and the heat index rising, the Blaze had to play one more game in the Blazing heat to bring home the Championship. The Blaze, led by Arnold in the circle, won against a tough NY Panther team. Alexa put in a gutsy performance late in the day giving up only two hits and a walk while stringing out eleven. In the first inning Kelly McCurry and Lauren Davis worked out back to back walk’s to force in the first runs of the game. The Blaze offense managed to post another four runs with base hits from Murphy, Schwartz, Arnold, Kovac and Davis. Carisone had three walks and scored once and Victoria Triozzi also walked with bases loaded to force in a run. Quinn Kelly also gave support with her instinctive base running abilities.
