REBEL HISTORY
INTRODUCTION
In the spring of 1997 an exciting new Rep. Team was established in BRAMS UNITED GIRLS SOCCER CLUB and given the name REBELS by coach John Fioze.
The concept of such a young Rep. Team within this Club was apparently quite new and met with some opposition. Not only was this the first year that BRAMS UNITED fielded an Under 11 Rep. Team, the BULLETS, but they went one step further and made application for the REBELS, an Under 10 team, to compete at the U11 level in the First division of the South Region Soccer League. The Club was made to realize that , not only did we have the necessary number of able young ladies from which to form a team, it was in the best interest of a competitive club and the community to have such a team.
And so, in the face of suggestions that we would "burn out" these 9 and 10 year old girls who were obviously too young to play competitive soccer let alone 1 year up, the REBELS were born.
The determination to bring the REBELS into being and the actual beginnings of the Team can be traced back to June of 1996 when Coach Fioze was asked to form an U9 All-Star team. The teams nucleus was found there and after 2 tournaments the team went indoors two nights a week from October of 1996 to April, 1997.
It is important to keep in mind that there were no grand illusions as to what the REBELS could accomplish during the 1997 Outdoor season. The REBELS were a new team playing up one year. There were absolutely no expectations concerning winning games. Coach Fioze's goal was simple and well communicated to players and parents alike. The REBELS were entering the 97 season with this purpose. To learn, gain experience and improve upon the REBELS skills. This was and remains the Teams focus such that we will be prepared to compete and set much higher goals for the 1998 Outdoor season when the REBELS will finally be playing at their own age level. Hopefully in the most competitive Premier Division.
THE SOUTH REGION LEAGUE 1997 OUTDOOR SCHEDULE
The REBELS league schedule featured 9 games at Home and 7 games Away. Home games were played at Hilldale North. Other teams in our division included Bolton, North Mississauga, Burlington, Kitchener and Waterloo.
As mentioned earlier, there was no concern about the fact that the REBELS did not win a game during league play. However, the REBELS did prove to be competitive !
Of the 15 scheduled league games played, 10 were decided by 3 goals or less including 2 scoreless ties, 3 by 1 goal and 2 by 2 goals. The fact that most of these low scoring games came towards the end of the season indicate that the REBELS were indeed learning and improving. Goals against declined sharply in the second half of the season as the REBELS learned to control the ball, the play and worked to eliminate their fear. To play aggressively and be first to the ball. To play smart.
The REBELS did manage a couple of ties during the season but the highlight of the year came in the form of the tournament win at Erie, PA to take the Flagship Cup.
The REBELS as a team did meet the goals set by the Coach to learn and improve. There remains, however, a lot of work to be done to prepare for the 1998 Outdoor season. This we hope will include participation in an Indoor league over the winter months along with continued indoor practices.
TOURNAMENTS
Over the course of the 1997 Outdoor season, the REBELS entered 3 tournaments.
Generally, the first tournament in Richmond Hill proved to be difficult for the REBELS. Our
league season had yet to begin so this was our first competition as a Team. The REBELS did
lose all 3 games but only by scores of 4-0, 3-0 and 7-0 to Vaughan, Richmond Hill and Pickering
respectively. This was a learning experience.
The second tournament in Erie, PA. proved to be a highlight in the REBELS season. Being in
the USA we were able to compete against teams more our age group, U10. The result was an undefeated tournament and a championship !
The third tournament in Thornhill had the REBELS playing back up at U11. However, at this point in the season we were starting to see the improvement in the Team. Again, the REBELS did not win one of the 3 games that they played, however, the scores were 1-0, 4-0 and 2-0 against Newmarket, Aurora and Woodbridge respectively.
CONCLUSION
In our estimation, the REBELS as a Team met the goals that Coach John Fioze set out for them at the beginning of the season. They learned, improved and gained valuable experience that can only come from competing.
Yes, over the course of the Indoor season, things will happen that will result in some changes. There may be some new faces in the line-up come next spring as we strive to continue to improve as a Team.
Choices will be made by players, parents and coaches alike.
People did take notice of the REBELS. Many times coaches and parents of other teams commented about the next year. They could see that the REBELS were competitive playing 1 year up.One of the goals of the REBELS is to succeed to the point that other young ladies in our Club and beyond want to be a REBEL !
FORWARD TO THE 97 - 98 INDOOR SEASON AT RICHMOND GREEN
The REBELS have gone indoors in order to continue to practice and compete. Indoor practices are 2 hours, 2 nights a week at Cardinal Leger School gym. In addition, the REBELS have been accepted in the Richmond Green Indoor League at Richmond Hill. As a result, the REBELS will continue to practice and compete throughout the Fall, Winter and Spring. We also intend to enter 2 or 3 indoor tournaments.
LEAGUE STANDINGS at RICHMOND GREEN, RICHMOND HILL :
TEAM GP W L T GF GA PTS
REBELS 13 11 0 2 32 0 35
Richmond Hill 13 6 4 3 13 9 21
Aurora 13 2 7 4 7 21 10
Unionville 13 1 9 3 5 25 6
After completing the Indoor schedule, Richmond Green held a playoff where the REBELS had to play the 3rd place Aurora Stingers in a semi-final before advancing to the championship game. REBELS defeated the Stingers 4 - 0 and advanced to the championship game against the Richmond Hill Rippers.
The Rippers were the only team to play the REBELS to 2 scoreless ties during the Indoor season. They accomplished this by playing a defensive game that virtually set up a wall in front of their goal-keeper throughout the game. They played for the scoreless tie. In the mean time the Rippers were not learning how to play the other side of the game. Towards the last half of the season Coach Fioze taught the REBELS a couple of plays that broke down that defensive wall
and when the REBELS scored the Rippers went into a panic because they had not learned how to play any offence against the REBELS.
The result - in the Campionship game REBELS win 1 - 0. The Rippers put up a battle but they never did learn how to play offensively against the REBELS !
1997 INDOOR TOURNAMENTS :
CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT at THE HANGAR, DOWNSVIEW, ONTARIO
BRAMPTON REBELS SCORE OPPONENT(s) : SCORE

3 WEST ROUGE 0
2 GLEN SHIELDS 0
3 PETERBOROUGH 0
4 WEST ROUGE - FINAL

Comments : The REBELS of Brampton swept the opposition at the HANGER Christmas Soccer Tournament, Under 11 Girls Division in Downsview. In the preliminary round the
REBELS shout out East York, West Rouge, Glen Shields and Peterborough by scores of 4, 3, 2
and 3 to 0 respectively. West Rouge earned the right to meet the REBELS again in the final only to be shout out again, 4 to 0. REBELS goalkeeper Sabrina Chirco was elected tournament MVP for the teams 5 game shut out performance.
In an effort to find good competition Coach John Fioze also entered the REBELS in the Under 12 Division tournament at the HANGAR where they came within 1 point of going to the championship game. That tournament was won by Scarborough Azzuri who had to come from a 2 to 0 deficit to tie the REBELS, 2 all, in the last game to earn the right to meet Vaughan in the championship game.
This marks the end of the REBELS 97-'98 Indoor Season. A huge success by anybody's
standards. The REBELS look forward now to a very busy Outdoor season in the South Region
Soccer League where as many as 16 teams have entered the U-11 Division. In addition, the
REBELS intend to enter at least 8 tournaments including Richmond Hill, May 9-10, Mississauga, May 16-18, Newmarket and Waterloo in June, North Mississauga in July, the Brams United and Ottawa tournaments in August and Oakville in September.
