Congratulations to the Rebels on yet another Ontario Cup Championship!

Being part of the player development team at Brams United, I've had the opportunity to be around the Rebels much more than I have in the past. Throughout my travels and interactions, I've come to think that there are some in and around the Rebel camp who are never satisfied. It matters not, how well the girls play or don't play, if they win or don't win. Yes, granted sometimes the road may be rocky, but it's not so much the journey, but the final destination. It is my sincere hope that a certain level of satisfaction was gained from the Rebels convincing 3-0 victory on Sunday over Sudbury, especially considering at the beginning of the year, the situation looked dismal, the team in shambles.

If my math is correct, the Rebels have been in 10 Ontario Cup competitions (Indoor and Outdoor) and you have come away with 7 medals ... 5 gold and 2 silver ... what an amazing accomplishment! So many teams NEVER get the chance to even get the opportunity to make the final with a chance to win at least one. Having come to the end of the road with my past team, while you might take things for granted now, when it comes time to reminisce, you will realize just what a hell of a run you had, and be incredibly thankful that you had the opportunity to play for such a special team and such a special coach.

In closing, I want to congratulate one of the coaches who I respect the most, John Fioze. While John might not have ever made a pass or scored a goal for the Rebels, he is the major reason for the success of the team. I'm currently reading a book, "Coaching the Mental Game" and this is a passage from a chapter on "Criticism" that I found fitting ...

"Criticism will continue to come. It's a kind of tax a coach pays to spectators for his power over their critical opinions. If the coach maintains his perspective, objectivity and courage, he'll have a mental belligerency based on the trust in his convictions, even in the fact of criticism. But learning and change will also be there, if there is validity to what he hears.

As as an oft bed-ridden young boy, I was inspired by reading about Theodore Roosevelt, our 26th President, who was similarly afflicted. In his later years, he had the following to say, an inspiration, I'd think to those who are often criticized:

It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes short again and again because there is no effort without error and shortcomings, and who knows the great devotion, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the high achievement of triumph and who at worst, if he fails while daring greatly, knows his place shall never be with those timid and cold souls who know neither victory nor defeat".

Rebels, you are not only the standard for which all Brams United teams in the future will be measured, but a shining example to aspiring teams of what is actually possible, if you believe in yourselves and have great leadership.
