ASK COACH BOB - TIPS ON THE NEW SPORTS CONDITIONS

Q. What do you think is the most important thing you need in your arsenal for bowling on the new sports conditions?

A. I am assuming you mean what kinds of bowling balls; you need very predictable and mostly mellow types of weight layouts. More than that, however, you need a completely different mental game that the one you use on a wide-open shot. When bowling on the sports shot you have to rearrange your thinking to making good shots, making spares and knowing that 200 games are big games. You can’t go in looking for the big game...if you get one great, but you have to realize the big game will be the exception not the rule.

Another big key to scoring on the sports shot is learning to relax your swing on the tougher shot. The tendency is to tighten up and try to place the ball. This will only lead to more frustration. When you are tight you can’t repeat shots and your carry goes to pot. Your best bet is to accept the challenge and have fun with it. Relax your arm swing and roll the ball with all the confidence you can muster up. Shake off the bad shots and learn from them. You will soon get better at it and your whole game will improve.
