Traveling Basketball Program Information

TRAVELING BASKETBALL PROGRAM

General Information: The Traveling Basketball program is more intense and competitive and is designed to give the players in our community an opportunity to compare their basketball skills with other communities’ players in 6 - 13 weekend tournaments, and possibly also a weekly league schedule. Players are selected through a tryout procedure. Traveling Basketball requires significant player, parent and financial commitment. Traveling Teams typically practice two nights per week with as many as four games per weekend. Tournaments are located throughout the metro area and may include an out-of-town tournament. Dates, times and locations of tournaments are determined by the Board and coaches. Parents need to be prepared to drive and stay for their players’ games. Practices begin in September and continue through early March. Practice times are assigned by the Scheduling Director in September in cooperation with coaching staffs.

Eligibility: The area of service of the SAVSB will be the same as the residents or enrolled students in the geographic boundaries of the St. Anthony/New Brighton Independent School District 282. Players not residing in or enrolled in schools within the district boundaries may participate in the SAVSB Traveling program only to complete a team roster. No exceptions!

Registration and Fees: Players must either pre-register by mail or in person on or before their first tryout session for their grade level’s Traveling Program. Players must provide a completed registration form, including all signatures, a signed Code of Conduct form, AND the appropriate fee at the time of registration. The registration fee for the Traveling Program is $140.00 for the 2008/2009 season ($280.00 maximum per family). Make checks payable SAVSB. No refunds for players that do not make a traveling team and still play in the in-house league.

In addition to the program registration fee, parents should expect to pay an additional $125-$225 per player for yearly tournament fees. Families of players should also be prepared to incur other miscellaneous expenses at tournaments (admission fees, concessions, etc.) Teams may also attend an out of town tournament, which involves transportation, food and lodging expenses.

Tryouts: Players interested in trying out for the traveling program will do so at their own grade level. Players may not “play up” or “play down”. Players should plan to attend all tryout sessions for their level. Attendance at the first session is mandatory unless prior arrangements have been made with the Traveling Director. Evaluators may request a third try-out session for a grade level to better evaluate a group. Gym shoes must be worn at tryouts. Only Board members, the evaluators, and the players will be allowed in the gymnasium during the tryout sessions. At least three evaluators will be present at each session. Evaluators rate players on basic skills, form, court presence, teamwork and attitude. Scores from the evaluators are averaged and players are ranked by scores. If the evaluators determine that there are enough players that demonstrate quality skills, a second traveling team may be formed. The decisions of the evaluators are final. Players who are not selected for the Traveling Teams will be selected to play on In-House teams. Please be dressed and ready for try outs 15 minutes prior to your scheduled try out session.

Coaches: The Traveling program is dependent on volunteer coaches. Individuals interested coaching traveling should complete and mail in a coaching application AND criminal background check waiver available under the "Handouts" section of this web site. Coaches’ Certification is mandatory and is available on-line. Team rosters and coaching information are handed out at this meeting.

Practice/Game Schedule: Teams can expect to practice one to two times per week for one, to one and one-half hours per session. Practice days are usually run Monday through Sunday. Practices begin in October with tournaments beginning in early November and continuing through mid March.
