Mustangs Drop Hard Fought Quarterfinal Match to Gonzaga

Joey Gorirossi netted the Mustangs goal with a finely placed shot off of a crisp pass from Dan Artin. Keeper John Leimbach played a great game between the pipes despite the swirling winds, supported by excellent defensive efforts from Matt Cullen, Mayowa Alli, Matt Michael, Jorden Howard, and Keith Payne. Leading the Mustangs attack with strong offensive runs were Max Allegro, Matt Malecki, Greg Carbott, and Gorirossi, while Jeff Meekins, Ryan Leslie, Andrew DeGennaro, Chris Martinette, C.J. Mustangs Win Playoff Game vs Ireton!
The Mustangs defeated Bishop Ireton 4-2 in the first round of the WCAC playoffs. The first half ended in a 0-0 tie, but the second half proved to be very exciting! The Mustangs scored first when Max Allegro netted a good cross from Matt Malecki. Ireton answered with a goal of their own to tie up the score. The Mustangs continued to press hard on the attack, and midway through the half Greg Carbott tallied a goal off of a pass from Allegro. Ireton answered right back on the kick off to knot the score at 2-2. A corner kick from Joey Gorirossi set up the go-ahead goal scored by Allegro, his second on the day that would give the Mustangs the lead for good. Gorirossi widened the lead when he buried the ball into the net following up a great shot by Andrew DeGennaro that hit the crossbar. Ryan Leslie, Dan Artin, and Jeff Meekins also were superb on the attack and in the midfield, while Chris Martinette came in late in the game to shore up the midfield in the final minutes. Keeper John Leimbach and defenders Matt Michael, Mayowa Alli, and Matt Cullen again played tremendous defense throughout the match to help earn the win for the Mustangs! Congratulations also to the Lady Mustangs who defeated Ireton 2-1 (PKs) in an exciting match-up that followed the men's game! Mustangs Defeat Ryken in Senior/Homecoming Game!
The Mustangs earned a 3-2 victory in their homecoming/senior day match vs St. Mary's Ryken. Ryken struck first in the 21st minute of play to take the lead. The Mustangs answered back to tie the score at 1-1 just before halftime when Ryan Leslie crossed a perfect ball to Matt Malecki in front of the goal, who buried his shot. The Mustangs came out on fire in the 2nd half, scoring two quick goals. Malecki scored the go ahead goal off of a beautiful through ball from Joey Gorirossi. Minutes later, a cross from Leslie found Gorirossi, who made a well-timed run to head the ball into the back of the net for what would prove to be the game winner. Ryken answered back with a late game goal to make the score 3-2, but the Mustangs' superb defense of Keeper John Leimbach and defenders Mayowa Alli, Matt Michael, and Matt Cullen proved too tough for the Knights to come back. Jorden Howard also lent good defensive play in key points of the match, while C.J. Dorsey, Max Allegro, Dan Artin, Greg Carbott, Jeff Meekins, Andrew Degennaro, and Chris Martinette were strong on the attack and in the midfield to contribute to the victory. Our seniors -- C.J. Dorsey, Joey Gorirossi, and John Leimbach -- were honored in a halftime ceremony and post-game celebration. Mustangs fans were also treated to a halftime tug-of-war between the classes and alumni, ultimately won by the senior class! Thanks to all who came out to support the team for homecoming and senior day! Thursday, October 9

In a soaking rain, the Mustangs played to a 2-2 first half tie against St. John's. The Mustangs struck first when a perfect pass from Ryan Leslie found Max Allegro in front of the net, who slotted a good shot past the SJC keeper. SJC answered back with two quick goals of their own. But in the final minute of the first half, Leslie sent a corner kick into the box that the SJC keeper mishandled; Allegro was there to grab the loose ball and tally his second goal of the match. Joey Gorirossi, Matt Michael, Greg Carbott, Chris Martinette, and Dan Artin controlled the match in the midfield with great ball handling and passing. Strikers Andrew DeGennaro and Matt Malecki were also strong on the attack. In the second half, both defenses played tough to keep the tie from being broken. The Mustangs dropped their first match to St. Edward's High School (ranked #1 in the state of Ohio), but the team quickly regrouped and came back to defeat Holy Trinity High School from Chicago, Illinois. In the win, Greg Carbott drilled a shot from the top of the box to give the Mustangs a 1-0 first half lead. In the second half, an exceptional passing combination led to Ryan Leslie hitting a superb left-footed shot into the back of the next off of a well-timed pass from Matt Michael to put the Mustangs up 2-0. Joey Gorirossi, Dan Artin, Andrew DeGennaro, Max Allegro, Chris Martinette, and Kyle Martin were also tough on the attack.
