Our staff has been looking forward to the 2008 football season ever since the final second of the 2007 Turkey Bowl ended with a very hard fought and difficult 19-18 loss to New Canaan. The real foundation for the ‘08 team actually started during the fourth quarter of that Turkey Bowl. With some of the starting seniors sidelined with injuries, the young team drove the length of the field in the final minutes to score the go ahead touchdown, only to lose the lead with less than two minutes to go.
Displaying the poise of a seasoned championship team, the junior-heavy squad once again drove the length of the field and took three strikes in the end zone. The game was over, but the stage was set. Following an energetic winter weight room, a very productive spring practice, several camps and 7/7 tournaments, the Blue Wave is much more experienced and deeper than the ‘07 squad.
This year’s team once again faces what many journalists have called the hardest schedule in the state. The top 8 out of 19 FCIAC schools are all on our schedule. As I have told the team, the strength of their schedule can be a positive. If they can stay focused and beat some of the best teams in the state they will reap the benefits of the power rankings when it comes time to qualify for the state tournament.
Regardless of the wins and losses, this group of young men is a pleasure to work with as they see obstacles as nothing but opportunities to step over and rise above to become a better team.
