Is Peak to Peak peaking?
Coach hopes squad can keep ‘desire to score’ throughout playoffs

The Peak to Peak girls soccer team may have entered the Class 3A state playoffs with a No. 13 seed, but the No. 20 Jefferson Academy Jaguars stepped onto the field Tuesday, May 5, at Peak to Peak Charter School boasting sophomore Maddie Page, the leading goal scorer in the nation.

However, on Tuesday, the Pumas didn’t seem to let Page’s impressive stats intimidate them as they sailed to a 7-0 victory over the Jaguars in the first round of the state playoffs.

“Before we broke off to go play, we made sure our defenders know No. 11 (Page) was a key player,” said Freshman Gavi Roda.

Peak to Peak (8-7) was led by its underclassmen all game, particularly Roda, a freshman, who scored a hat-trick on the night.

Roda started things off a little over five minutes into the first half and it wasn’t long before the onslaught of Puma goals began.

Though it seemed like a walk in the park for the Pumas, Roda said her teammates were putting 100 percent effort into the proceedings.

“We tried not to come off thinking we were automatically going to beat them,” she said. “(The Jaguars are) in playoffs, they deserve to be here, too.”

A lot of young talent is propelling the Pumas at this point. Former J.V. players like Lauren Jones and Emily Gardener are showing what they’re made of — both girls scored a goal against the Jaguars (9-6).

Roda said, considering the fact that the Pumas play in the Metro League, against many of the top 3A teams in the state, the team is usually well prepared when it comes to the postseason.

Coach Peter Chandler said he’s hoping his players can keep the momentum coming offensively.

“Hopefully, they keep the desire to score goals,” Chandler said. “Because, initially, in the first two-thirds of our season, scoring goals wasn’t easy for us.”

Knowing their league well can work in the Pumas’ advantage as they progress through the playoffs. Four of their Metro League opponents are also attempting to make their way through the state bracket.

On Saturday, May 9, the Pumas will take on No. 4 seed St. Mary’s Academy (11-2). The Wildcats are a familiar team for the Pumas. Peak to Peak lost a close contest to St. Mary’s during the regular season.

“They were the No. 1 team in the Metro League and we lost, 2-0, to them,” Chandler said. “They are a good side and deserving of that first place in the league. So, we’re just going to go give it our best.

“Now, in the second round, this is where it gets fun,” he added.
