Buckhorn tops Grissom in 3OTs
Tigers' missed PAT helps Bucks escape with 21-20 victory

NEW MARKET - Earning a regional victory Friday night was equally important to both Buckhorn and Grissom. It took the Bucks three overtimes to prevail in a 21-20 win over the Tigers. "These were two teams that played their hearts out," Buckhorn coach Michael Jackson said. "They battled. I'm so proud of my guys, especially for our seniors for all they've overcome." The game was tied at 7-all at the end of regulation. In the first overtime period, Terrion Stewart scored on a 1-yard plunge for Grissom (2-3, 2-3 in Class 6A, Region 8). Buckhorn (3-2, 3-2) answered with a 2-yard run from Marquis Smith to make it 14-14. Grissom had a chance to put it away in the second overtime. After intercepting a Buckhorn pass in the end zone, the Tigers missed a field goal that would have given them the win. The Tigers scored first in the third overtime period, but James Taylor's PAT was wide left, giving Grissom a 20-14 lead. On the alternate possession, Smith plunged in from the 1-yard line and Nick Luna converted the PAT to give the Bucks the win. The victory was especially emotional for Buckhorn assistant Ron Massey, who was head coach at Grissom for the previous 10 years. "This was hard for me, but I'm happy we got the win," Massey said. "I knew Grissom's personnel better than ours. Grissom didn't quit and I know they won't now." After a scoreless first quarter, the Bucks struck first with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. Quarterback Matt Broady tossed a swing pass to Smith, who raced 47 yards for a touchdown. Luna converted the PAT to give Buckhorn a 7-0 lead, which stood at the half. Grissom scored on the first play of the fourth quarter on a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Stephen Hill to Colton Albert. Taylor tied it at 7-7 with the PAT. In regional action next week, Buckhorn travels to Florence, while Grissom hosts Hazel Green. Saturday, September 26, 2009, By Carlton Rice, Special to The Times.
