2009 Challenger Information
The Billerica Little League Challenger Division
Players ages 6-16, as of April 30, 2009, with physical and emotional disabilities that would otherwise keep them from participating in Little League baseball will have the opportunity to play in the Billerica Little League Challenger Division. The League reaches out to the entire community to identify children who can be served by the Challenger Division. Parents who wish to have their child participate should complete a registration form and mail back to address on form.
“The Challenger Division of Little League Baseball is a program for mentally and physically disabled youth to enjoy the full benefits of Little League participation in an athletic environment structured to their abilities. More than the skills of baseball learned through the experience, the value of the Billerica Little League Challenger Division will provide the therapeutic and socialization benefits of participation in sports, the strengthening of the participants; self-esteem the opportunities to mainstream into other divisions of play, and the disciplines of teamwork, citizenship and fair play which are hallmark of the Little League program.”
WHAT IS CHALLENGER BASEBALL?
Challenger is a division of Little League Baseball for children ages 6-16 who have physical or mental conditions that prevent safe participation in other baseball programs. Play is structured to allow all players to be involved as they are able. Traditional rules are modified and the focus is always on having fun while learning the game of baseball. No score is kept, each player bats every inning, and everyone plays the entire game. Each player is assigned a “Buddy” who works to ensure safety and success. A soft baseball is used for all games and practices.
Children who live in Billerica and surrounding towns are eligible to play in the Billerica Little Leagues Challenger Program. The season begins on Sunday, April 27, 2009 and continues through the second Sunday in June. Games are held each Sunday and last approximately two hours.
