Bainbridge Island Little League

Challenger Baseball Program

I am excited to tell you about the new Challenger Program with Bainbridge Island Little League. This is brand new this year to Bainbridge, and my hope is that it will continue to grow year after year. We had our first practice on Sunday, April 5th, and the kids were so excited to be playing baseball. Many of the kids have grown up going to the baseball field to watch siblings and friends play softball or baseball every spring. Now it is their turn!

We have a wonderful volunteer, Marc Strachan, the father of Mathew Strachan who has organized these families and is coaching the team along with the help of the parents.

Taken from the National Little League website: http://www.littleleague.org/Little_League_Online.htm

The Challenger Division was established in 1989 as a separate division of Little League Baseball to enable boys and girls with physical and mental challenges, ages 5-18 or the completion of high school, to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide.

One of the benefits of having a Challenger Division is that it encourages the use of "buddies" for the Challenger players. The buddies assist the Challenger players on the field but whenever possible, encourage the players to bat and make plays themselves. However, the buddy is always nearby to help when needed.

Cost is $70. This includes a jersey & hat, photo day with a team picture for each player insurance coverage for the league. No one will be turned down, if you cannot afford the registration fee. The league has scholarships available to pick up the cost for those in need.
