Big Walnut High School Football: Welcome

Varsity 2013 Newsletter

Dear Parents and Players

Hopefully everyone enjoyed the holiday season and had a great break. The New Year brings new challenges and opportunities to the Big Walnut Football Program.  I hope that you are as excited about the upcoming season as me and the other coaches are. The 2013 football season will look different as there are some changes to the schedule. The purpose of this letter is to give you an advance TENTATIVE SCHEDULE for the summer and the season as it approaches. The goal is to work together with all players and parents to maximize attendance and participation in our camp days and weight room sessions. Make no mistake that this season will present some tough challenges; however I am confident the toughness of the players in this program will welcome and attack those challenges with relentless effort. We cannot waste a moment to prepare.

PLAYER RESPONSIBILITIES:

WE MUST TAKE ON THIS SEASON TOGETHER! THE ONLY WAY TO COME TOGETHER IS TO BE TOGETHER. IN ORDER TO GET PLAYING TIME, YOU MUST BE TRUSTED BY YOUR TEAMMATES AND BY YOUR COACHES AND DEMONSTRATE HOW IMPORTANT FOOTBALL IS. THE ONLY WAY TO EARN THAT TRUST IS TO WORK, SWEAT, AND TRAIN TOGETHER WITH YOUR TEAMMATES. IT IS NOT OK TO MISS LIFTING. IT IS NOT OK TO MISS WORKOUTS. IT IS NOT OK TO DO THINGS YOUR OWN WAY. THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY, WHICH IS THE BIG WALNUT TEAM WAY. FOOTBALL IS THE ULTIMATE TEAM SPORT. CHAMPIONSHIP CALIBER TEAMS HAVE UNSELFISH PEOPLE THAT COMMIT TO EACH OTHER, WORK TOGETHER AND WIN AS A TEAM.

WEIGHT TRAINING :                     YOU MUST LIFT!!!

Athletes not involved in a winter sport or spring sport sponsored by BWHS are expected to commit to the weight room and value attendance. You must devote your time to your team and the weight room. Pride yourself in attendance. Football weight lifting is from 2:30 until 3:45 on Mondays, Wednesday s, and Fridays. We do have the weight room until 4:00 for those that want more!

WEIGHT TRAINING: (football players playing other sports)  For our brothers that are participating in winter and spring sports, it is IMPERATIVE that you continue to lift your core exercises. You must continue to lift your core exercises.  If you are not lifting, YOU WILL FALL BEHIND. YOU WILL FALL BEHIND YOUR TEAMMATES WHO ARE LIFTING, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY BEHIND OUR OPPONENTS. Lift twice a week.   Core Exercises are: Towel Bench, Box Squat, Power Clean, Full Bench, Full Squat, Dead lift. We follow the BFS system. You must perform the core exercises and keep your book updated. The athletes that are playing winter and spring sports demonstrate their commitment by getting their lifts done no matter the season. THERE IS NO EXCUSE. THERE IS TIME. THERE IS A WAY. I WILL MAKE SURE THAT YOU CAN GET IN THE WEIGHT ROOM WHILE IN ANOTHER SPORT. Please contact Coach Weaver if you need to work out a time to get into the weight room.

PLYOS:                                        YOU MUST WORK!

Speed and Power are developed through plyometric training. Plyo’s are Tuesday and Thursday morning from 6:15 -7:00 AM. That is the only available gym time for us to use. It is early and we do sacrifice sleep, but we are getting better and developing as a team while everyone else is snug in their beds. Players will shower and then report to first period class after plyos. It is encouraged to bring breakfast for after. You may attend morning workouts if you participate in another sport. That must be communicated with your in season coach BEFORE ATTENDING. The exercises we perform are designed to increase speed quickness and power. All of which are essential to ALL SPORTS. Rides can be arranged and coordinated by teammates that live close to you if needed. Parents must be ok with you riding with a teammate. PERSONAL TRAINERS AND OUTSIDE WORKOUT FACILITIES / OVERTRAINING:The use of personal trainers and facilities such as D-1 are not discouraged, HOWEVER THEY SHOULD NOT TAKE PRECEDENT OVER WORKING WITH THE GUYS YOU WILL BE PLAYING WITH ON FRIDAY NIGHTS. Recovery time is as important as work-out time. Do not over train. Over training is worse than not training at all. If you are using outside sources, please discuss you schedule with me. MORE DOES NOT = BETTER!

We must be willing to commit the time, effort, and attitude for us to be successful. We will get out of this season exactly what we put into it. Believe in each other and the program. Let's come together for the common cause and make BIG WALNUT FOOTBALL a force to be reckoned with in the 2013 season. IT STARTS NOW! Wear the Wings with PRIDE                                               GO EAGLES!
