Bucket's Tip of The Week
WHO IS BUCKET? Bucket is a Softball Legand in Rochester, NH league. His tips are very interesting and helpful. You may want to take some notes!
Lazy fly balls
Recently I was emailed a question about how to cure lazy fly balls. It's simple really, STOP ELEVATING THE DAMN BALL!! Far too often I see inexperienced players try to burn outfielders or hit outfield gaps when in fact they should be trying to hit infield gaps. Know your role and capabilities and you'll be a better player for it. If you're not a power hitter then don't try to hit like one. Is it possible to take a place kicker and make him an offensive lineman? If your name is Janikowski and you have a pierced pecker then maybe but if your name is Gramatica then probably not. Do you see where I'm going with this? I sure don't. Here are some other reasons for hitting lazy fly balls.
1)Get back to the basics. Watch the ball hit the bat and follow through. Watch Manny Ramirez hit and you'll see what I mean. Even after a bomb his head is locked in on where he made contact. If you pull your head off the ball then guess what, your bat comes with it.
2)Use a bat you can handle. Dont try to force a 30 oz bat through the strike zone when you could glide through it with a 27oz. I swing a 26oz and I tip the truck scales at a svelt 320oz (alright, alright lbs). Before dropping to a 26oz I was hitting in the low 600s and since Ive hit 700+ for the last 4-5 years. Once again DO THE MATH!!!
3)Homeruns are overrated. If its really that important to you to hit homeruns then buy an XBOX. Chicks don't dig the long ball, they dig a brother with cash.
4)Practice,practice,practice. You'll never make improvements in your swing by just getting 4 swings a game. It's important to get to the cages on a regular basis and get some quality swings with no interruptions. I bet with all the damn money I've spent at hilltop I built that damn Nascarts track.
