If you don't know who this man is, then your not a Allegany Football historian. James Refosco came to Allegany in 1977 as the head football coach. Just three years after the state of Maryland started a playoff and football championship series, Refosco took the Campers to three Maryland State Football championships in 1978, 1980 and 1983. The only other coach to have that kind of success is the infamous Jack Gilmore, who also won 3 championships in 1988, 1989 and 1991.

Refosco was a stickler for perfection and a coach who made his players better by his determination for excellence. Refosco left Allegany in 1984 with a record of 76 wins and 11 losses. Third only to yet again, Jack Gilmore's 92 wins and 24 defeats and Ed Schwarz's 79 wins and 45 losses.

Aydelotte Areas 1st two time winner
The 6' 2", 225 pound fullback for the Allegany Campers, who in 1998 ran away with area Offensive Player of the Year honors, has done it again; and if carrying his second straight Morton W. Peskin Sr. Memorial Award out of the Ali Ghan Shrine Club isn't the most physically taxing chore he'll perform, then finding a sport in his trophy room to place the wall size Peskin plaque might well be.

Aydelotte became the first repeat winner of the award. Dave was our bread and butter, said Allegany coach Tim Kane. For the past two season, he's been our workhorse. The player who sets the tempo for our offense and, in turn, the entire game.

Dave rushed for over 1,000 yards for the second straight year with 1200 yards on 193 carries for a 6.2 average. He scored 18 touchdowns for 108 points, including two in the Campers 21-14 victory over Fort Hill in the annual Homecoming Game in which he was named the Offensive Player of the game.

The player that holds the scoring record at Allegany, Michael Fields was one fast individual. Michael broke the long time record for Allegany football season scoring held by none other then Danny Porter in 1984 with 154 points. In 1994, Michael broke the record with 162 point effort which would of also been the city scoring record, however, in the same year, 1995, Fort Hill had a player by the name of Shannon Trimble who has that record of 180 points in one season.

Fields was known for his speed and the ability to out run just about any body else on the field of play. Probably the last great outside threat from Allegany, Michael had a outstanding football and basketball career at Alco.

Dan Shanholtz, 1997 - 1999
It wasn't to long ago when Danny Shanholtz graced the playing field of Allegany. Dan was a varsity player from his Sophomore year and a regular starter for the Campers in both Junior and Seniors seasons. Shanholtz was major threat in every game he played. His natural speed and quickness was a primary reason Allegany came from behind to defeat Keyser 7 - 3 at Greenway Stadium after the Campers were trailing 3-0 with only 2 minutes left to play. His consistent down and out pass catching lead to a last second victory.

However, Mr. Shanholtz will be forever remembered for his outstanding catch with 1:20 left in the 1999 Homecoming game that scored the winning touchdown to break the 8 consecutive game hold that Fort Hill had enjoyed. A perfect pass from Nathan Simpson and a wonderful over the shoulder catch by Dan, put the Blue and White from the West Side into a month long celebration the likes we haven't seen in many years. A special thanks to Dan and Nathan for those wonderful memories.

Coach Gilmore argues in 1993
Gilmore Argues 93 Punt
Gilmore argues FH's 1993 mishandled punt
If you remember this event, then you are a Alco fans.

It was early in the 4th quarter, Allegany had supposedly stopped Fort Hill deep in FH territory and it was fourth down. Fort Hill snapped the ball which went over the punters head. Of course, the Allegany defensive players started to pounce on the now fumble. However, the Fort Hill punter scrambled for the ball as well, picked it up and attempted to punt the ball. Although the FH punter did make contact with the ball if ever so little, the on coming Alco defenders also made contact with the punter.

Even though the ball was snapped over the punters head, the FH punter still attempted to punt the ball and the on coming Alco players were called for roughing the punter and giving the ball back to Fort Hill, first and 10, thus allowing the Sentinels to score the winning touchdown.

If you remember this picture, then you remember this argument stopped the game for some time, but to no avail as the penalty was assessed and Allegany lost the game in a heated contest.

One of Allegany's best Players/Coaches and Teachers
Dave Merrill

Dave Merrill can be summed up as, the epitome of Allegany football. Not only did Dave play for the Campers in the late 60's, he went on to glory at the University of Pittsburgh and then returned to Allegany in 1970 as an assistant coach under then Coach Mel Schwarz. Dave remained an assistant until 1995 through 1996 when he became head coach until he turned over the reigns to now head coach Tim Kane.

Dave still remains at Allegany as a teacher and as always, still loved by many students, teachers and Allegany alumni alike.

IN THE LAST 40 YEARS IT HAS BEEN

WHARTONS' AT ALCO!

For the last decade or so, there has'nt been a year that there wasn't a Wharton boy or girl on an Allegany team.  In football, the name Wharton has been a household name for years and years.

Back in the 70's and 80's, it was Tab and Tim Wharton who made thier mark in local football.  Since then, beginning in the 2000 season, there was Tabrenn, Tyler and Dustin.  All of whom have made their mark on local football and continue on through today.   Just recently, Dustin was noted for winning 2 world records in weightlifting and playing for Georgetown Football.  In this case, we are talking about Tyler, who is a senior fullback at Towson University.

A special thanks to Times News' Mike Burke for this outstanding write-up.

Terps next for Wharton, undefeated Towson U.

Mike Burke Cumberland Times-News The Cumberland Times-News

Upon the speeding bus headed south to College Park that we alluded to last Sunday, will be the 2006 Cumberland Times-News High School Football Player of the Year, Allegany High School’s Tyler Wharton, who is the starting fullback for the Towson University Tigers.

The undefeated Tigers take on the University of Maryland Saturday, 3:30 p.m., at Byrd Stadium for the first time and are coming off a 42-17 Homecoming victory over Colgate before a crowd of 9,919, the third largest crowd in Johnny Unitas Stadium history.

Wharton had a big hand in Towson’s first win over Colgate in 10 meetings, taking in a short pass on the fourth play of the second half and taking it 49 yards for a touchdown to give the Tigers a 21-3 lead.

Wharton now has four receptions this season and three of them have gone for touchdowns. He led Towson to its 42-3 season-opening victory over Morgan State by scoring the first two touchdowns of his career and had a career-high three receptions for 42 yards. He caught a 19-yard TD pass in first quarter to give Tigers a 7-3 lead as well as a 12-yard TD pass in third quarter, putting Tigers ahead by 21-3.

Wharton, 6-1, 220-pound senior, who was converted from linebacker to fullback prior to the 2009 season is better known for his blocking and earned second-team All-Colonial Athletic Association second-team honors in 2010, playing in every game and starting four. He played in all 12 games at fullback in 2009 as well as all 12 games in 2008 as a reserve linebacker. Wharton is also a valuable special teams player.

At Allegany, of course, he was two-time first-team Times-News All-Area and started as a junior on the Campers’ 2005 Maryland 1A state championship team. He also played basketball, ran track and field and was a member of the National Honor Society at Allegany.

The son of Tim and Tracey Wolford, Tyler and his brother Dustin (2009), a sophomore defensive back at Georgetown, are the only brothers to be named Times-News Player of the Year.

Wharton’s number is 44,  and those lucky enough to still be able to watch Comcast    SportsNet Mid-Atlantic can view it there. While the game is being carried by the Raycom Regional Sports Networks, as of now, CSN is the only place in Maryland,       Virginia, D.C. and parts of Delaware, Pennsylvania and West Virginia where it can be seen.

Of course, if you’d like to go to the game at Byrd and see Tyler play in person, based on what we know and based on what we saw last Saturday at the Temple game, plenty of tickets will be available.

(In return for this inside information I will accept, for starters, a calzone of my own, a slice of pepperoni pizza,  — Ledo’s Knox Road, of course — a large soda and three times a week I will require a cannoli.)

Head coach Rob Ambrose is in his third season at Towson, posting a 6-18 record his first two years. Before taking the Towson job, Ambrose spent seven seasons as an assistant coach for Randy Edsall, the current Maryland head coach, at the University of Connecticut.

The Tigers have averaged 460 yards of total offense this season, ranking eighth among Football Championship Subdivision schools, and have surrendered just 30 points in three games, accumulating seven sacks, five fumble recoveries and three interceptions. The Tigers are first in the FCS in scoring defense (10.0 ppg) and 12th in total defense (288.3 ypg).

Everything that is happening with the Tigers is just about the beginning of what the university envisioned happening when Ambrose was hired. They are 3-0 for the first time since 2006, and their 31-10 victory over Villanova, ranked No. 20 in the FCS, two weeks ago was the school’s first win over a ranked team in four years.

Ambrose has already received three Gatorade showers this season and, according to the Baltimore Sun, more students than ever before, over 4,000, attended last week’s game against Colgate. Tailgaters come to Unitas Stadium early and stay late. For the first time in a long time, the Towson community is all in with Tigers football.

Things are very different — very different in a very better way.

“We’re not in the Patriot League anymore, and this is not the same old Towson," Ambrose told the Sun after the win over Colgate.

As for Towson’s rebuilding plan being ahead of schedule, Ambrose told the Sun, “Tonight was just one brick, but it was a hell of a brick.”

It would be interesting to hear what kind of a brick a Towson win this coming Saturday would be.
