9 Year Old and 12 Year Old Travel Team Tryouts
BHLL will be holding tryouts for the Beverly Hills 9 year old Little League travel team and the 12 year old Little League travel team on January 30, 2010. The tryouts are tentatively scheduled at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs.
In 2009, the 11 year old tournament teams from Birmingham and Beverly Hills played for the District 4 championship for the first time ever. To reach the championship, each team had to beat formidable opponents from Grand Blanc, Rochester, Commerce and Linden respectively. Adding to the drama was the fact that the Birmingham team won the State Championship the year prior. To be the best, Beverly Hills would have to beat the best.
Beverly Hills jumped out to an early lead, leading 1-0 after the first inning. A questionable call by the field umpire in the second inning gave Birmingham a 3 - 1 lead, and this is where the game stood after three innings. Zachary Paryaski, Beverly Hills top pitcher in the tournament, threw three strong innings, but tired in the fourth inning. With limited pitching arms, it didn't take long for Birmingham to increase their lead by 10 runs, which ended the game after four innings.
Ed Schwartz, Birmingham's coach, admitted after the game that his boys were getting a bit nervous. Coach Schwartz stated, “Anything can happen in these games. You are never certain of victory.”
Regardless, this achievement was noteworthy, as it was the first time that a BHLL team has been in this position. Despite BHLL losing the game to the prior-year State Champion Birmingham team, the kids finished their season with a strong sense of accomplishment and self-respect.
