8th Girls Capture 2006 CGBL Post-Season Championship
The Berlin 8th Grade Girls Travel Basketball Team won the Connecticul Girls Basketball League post-season tournament at Rocky Hill High School, by defeating the #1 seeded team, Madison, by a score of 62-47 in the championship game. Berlin qualified for the league's version of the "Final Four", having entered tournament as the #3 seed (secured with a 14-3 league regular season record) and by defeating #6 seed Southington by a score of 53-35. To reach the finals, Berlin defeated rival, #2 seed Avon in a closely fought game, 50-46 on Saturday afternoon. With the score tied at 31-31 after the third quarter, Berlin's balanced offense took control, with six players scoring during the final surge. Berlin's point guard, Alexyz Vazquez, suffered a broken finger early in the game, but still managed to lead the team with 12 points, including a decisive three point basket to seal Avon's fate. Kaitlyn Bovee also scored 12 points to go along with her 8 rebounds. Kim Rasmussen and Lindsay Erickson each added 8 points, while Jillian Young scored all four of her points in final quarter. Katelyn Zarotney was huge under the boards, with 10 rebounds and 7 blocked shots. Alex Boyd (13 points) and Chelsea Ryan (9 points) were the leading Avon scorers.
Against Madison, Berlin faced the propect of playing without Vazquez, and facing a team that defeated them by 2 points, on a last second hoop during the regular season. Berlin held the a narrow 28-25 point lead at half time, as both teams battled to gain the early advantage. Madison's Kerry Wallack hit for 16 of her game high 27 points in the half, but Berlin's fastbreak offense offset all of Wallack's efforts. Berlin broke the game open midway into the third quarter, as Alysse Madey took advantage of openings in Madison' s perimetere defense, by knocking down three, 3 pointers to extend the lead to 48-40 to open the final quarter. Berlin showed it composure, as they slowed the game tempo and demostrated excellent ball handling skills, forcing Madison to switch defenses in the closing minutes, as their potent offense sputtered. 6th and 8th Grade Girls Teams Capture CT Spirit Holiday Tournament Titles
One week before Christmas, and the BBA's 6th and 8th Grade Girls Travel Teams each celebrated the holiday early by winning their individual division championships of the Connecticut Spirit's Holiday Tournament.
The 6th Grader's overcame a tough one point lose in their final pool play game to West Hartford, only to find themselves earning the spot into the tournament final, in a rematch with the same West Hartford team. In their two earlier pool play games, Berlin took a one point win over rival Madison, and easily defeated Newington. In the title game, Berlin countered West Hartford's vast height advantage with a pressing defense, and fast tempo offense, winning the championship trophy going away.
The Berlin 8th Graders were clearly the class of the 10 team, 8th grade field, going 4-0 to win their own trophy. The final pitted Berlin against CGBL foe, Torrington. The 8th Graders came out running, but could shake their pesky opponents, opening up a 31-21 lead at half time. Berlin started to building the lead, eventually moving up by 17 points midway in the second half, before Torrington fought back to close the lead to 4 points. Berlin however settled the game in the final two minutes, reestablishing control of the game, and getting the win, and championship, 55-47. The 8th Grades had defeated Plainville, Cromwell, and the Manchester Rough Riders in their three pool play games.

6th & 7th Grade Girls Take Farmington Tournament Titles
The post-Christmas holiday weekend saw all four BBA Girls teams travel to Farmington for their Santa Shootout Tournament. Two of the teams took home tournament division titles, and a third team lost in their division finals. The Powerhouse Gym 6th Grade Team sweep all four of its games to take the first championship. The finals saw Berlin defeat a tough Avon squad for the second time in the tournament. The Wicklund Builders 7th Grade team also won their division, defeating Cheshire. The two teams had played the evening before, with Cheshire getting the win, and earning a spot in the finals against Berlin. The 7th Graders finished the tournament with an overall 3-1 record.
The Cap's Corner 8th Grade Team also made it to their division finals with a 2-0 tournament record, with wins over Avon-2 and Simbury. They faced the also tough Framington 8th Graders in the final, keeping the game close until the last couple minutes.
