Maybe now more than ever, concussions are the hottest topic in sports health. As a youth coach, I feel more rsponsible to protect these young men. These youth players are not even in high school yet, and deserve to live out their adolesence, concussion free. Coaches seem to forget sometimes what is most important in the pursuit of winning. At no time is it OK to allow a player who is having concussion-type symptoms, to go back on the field during a game. The NFL has procedures and guidelines, as does the NCAA, in protecting the players from further injuries. The high school and recreational level is where the most awareness needs to take place.
I hope the major Recreation leagues in Metro Atlanta will take the initiative and institute some measures to keep players showing concussion-like symptoms from returning into the game.
If you have a young man playing tackle football, you owe it to you and your son to visit sportsconcussion.org, and digest some useful information to help protect your child.
