BYF 14th Annual Awards Ceremony

Our annual event was a great success!  The event was dedicated to the late Coach Paul Silverman, who passed on in December.  Coach Paul was awarded the BYF President's Award, posthumously, for exceptional dedication and commitment to BYF.

Carlos Maldonado was awarded the Coach Cipp Award, for pride, spirit and heart despite adversity.

Held at Bellport Middle School for the first time in 4 years- we have been holding it at Villa Lombardi- many folks commented that it was comfortable, welcoming and fun!

We will post team photos and get you the complete story next week, so come back and visit again.

THANK YOU PATCHOGUE KIWANIS!

Bellport Youth Football is extremely grateful to the Patchogue Kiwanis for their recent donation of $5000.00 to our league!!!

Fundraising Committee Chairperson Chris Picini (Coach- 8s) advocated on our behalf to obtain this huge grant, which will go a long way to help us maintain our league.  Expenses are going up constantly, while revenue is down (and scholarships- kids playing for free or reduced rates- are in demand).  Please see Chris if you would like to help out onthis committee or have a "lead" for other grants.

Again, it is the commitment to community that make the Kiwanis such a wonderful organization, as we are proud to be considered for a grant by this group.

A few words about COMMITMENT- worth re-reading...
Many parents have asked questions about Bellport Youth Football- how much it costs, what they must buy, when are the practices, etc. These are all important and necessary questions, and we will be glad to answer them at registration.

One question that does not come up, usually not until later in the season, is the question of COMMITMENT- what YOU, the parent, and the ATHLETE, your son or daughter, have to do in order to make this experience meaningful and fun for all?

What we can say is that it is a time-intensive program; there are 2 or 3 practices a week in the summer, 2 a week in the fall, and a game every Friday, Saturday or Sunday from September through November. Practices are vitally important, and the more your child misses, the less they will learn and the less often they may get a chance to play come game-time. BYF athletes who do not practice become a danger to themselves and other team-mates. Coming to practice on time and in proper equipment is equally important; a child who is not properly equipped will NOT be able to practice or play- we need you to make sure the equipment is well cared for and able to be located on practice/game days. Lost or misplaced equipment is expensive to give out in duplicates, and we will not repeatedly replace what is lost. We also travel for half of the games (other half are at home), so you need to be at games- sometimes early in the morning!- on time and ready to play.

The last thing to mention is PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT! While we enjoy your children and they certainly do bond with their coach and team-mates, most children are happiest and play their best when a parent is watching from the sidelines! They want YOU to see that block, that tackle, that catch! They want to hear YOU cheer with the other parents or call their name out during the action. They play for you as much, if not more than, for their team. Yes, sometimes we all cannot make it to a game and it's perfectly o.k. for your child to go with Coach or another family- we do it alot, it's part of the "family". But it's not a good idea for the child to be "on their own" for a majority of the season; these children usually lose interest, find it too difficult to keep up with the demands (equipment, uniforms, schedules) and end up quitting the team. We have lost some terrific kids and fine athletes this way, and it's a shame. So plan to be involved as often as possible- it's good for your child, good for your family, and besides, it can be alot of FUN for YOU, too!

Anyone in the Bellport Youth Football "family"- board members, coaches, team parents-can and will assist you with being and staying involved in the many activities of the season, so do not hesitate to ask for help if you need it! See you at registration!

Frequently Asked questions- FAQs

ARE THERE OTHER COSTS after the registration fee?

Yes- your child will need practice pants (any color), a 7 piece pad set for the pants, and cleats (football or soccer- NOT baseball).  Shop well and these items should cost about $50, and will be used for the whole season (and maybe next season- especially the pads set). Any other equipment (speciality pads, under-armor, etc.) is optional and not required by league.

You must also purchase a nameplate for the jersey- cost $8 and will be kept for as long as your child plays with BYF.

Some teams collect money for pizza parties and other events, usually about $20 in the beginning of the season.

We sell t-shirts, sweatshirts, jewelry, etc and can be purchased if you wish, again optional.

You may also purchase a league jacket, but that is also optional ($60).

There are also team photos, which cost between $10 and $40 depending on which package you choose.  Many people get the football photos instead of the school photos, so you can save there!

DO I HAVE TO DO THE FUNDRAISER?

The answer is both yes and no.  No, because we do not have the right to MAKE you do it.  But YES, because this is the only way we can keep having a youth league and keep registration affordable for all.  Without a fundraiser, we would need to charge close to $250 for registration.

The fundraiser is a football raffle ticket that is easy to sell, requires no delivery of product, and very popular with purchasers (especially winners!)  If you have religious or personal reasons why you cannot do this fundraiser, please see Jacqui for another option.

WHEN DOES THE SEASON BEGIN?

It begins during the summer, second week of July, with 2-3 day weekly practices.  We practice at night, 6 to 8 p.m. when it is cooler and our coaches are done with work! For the most part, we do not do weekends (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) so families can go enjoy themselves.  It continues throughout the summer, and into the fall.  Practices continue during school, one night during week and Friday.  Games begin 2nd weekend in September, and continue on Sundays for 8 to 10 weeks.  Season ends in mid November.

DOES MY CHILD NEED TO ATTEND PRACTICES TO PLAY?

Don't even THINK about signing up for football if you cannot commit to most of the practices. There is alot to learn, and more fun if the child knows what they are doing! Also, a child that does not practice does not BOND with the team, is a danger to himself and others when he does not know plays and assignments, and it is not fair to children- and parents- who attend practice regularly.

WHAT IS A TRAVEL LEAGUE?

Bellport Youth Football is a Travel League, which means we play about 10 games (sometimes 8 sometimes 11) and half are at HOME (Martha Avenue Park in North Bellport) and half are AWAY at our competitor's fields.  Most of the games will be in and around Brookhaven Town, some in Islip Town, and a few out east, in the Hamptons and Riverhead area. The teams we play are also all Travel teams.

Parents will need to drive to away games, and if unable to attend, can hook up with another family or the coaches who will be happy to bring your child (and you).

WHAT IS INCLUDED WITH MY REGISTRATION FEE?

All practices, all games, special scrimmages and inter-league events.  Also, your child will receive a uniform (pants and game jersey), helmet and shoulder pads.  For cheerleaders, all games and practices, as well as uniform (vest and skirt).  You must purchase "personal itmes" such as cleats, sneakers, undergarments (lollipops for cheer and practice pants/pads for boys).

WEIGHT LIMITS for BYF/PAL teams- by age
These weights will be for your son, in full uniform and shoulder pads, minus helmet(uniform and shoulder pads weigh between 6 and 10 lbs. total)

5/6- not PAL, no weight limits/restrictions
7/8- up to 106 lbs. REGULAR; 111 lbs. HEAVY
9's- up to 116 lbs. REGULAR; 121 lbs. HEAVY (5 only); 126 lbs. SUPER HEAVY (one only)
10's- up to 126 lbs. REGULAR; 131 lbs. HEAVY (5 only); 136 lbs. SUPER HEAVY (one)
11's- up to 136 lbs. REGULAR; 141 lbs. HEAVY (5 only); 146 lbs. SUPER HEAVY (one)

Players may play "up" one age group (more than this, NOT recommended); there are no "light-weights" (playing "down" from your age). 90% of our players are "regular" weight players.

Please take this into consideration before registering and committing to youth football. Many children have lost weight to play in their age group without starvation diets; some lost 10 lbs. or more just cutting soda, juice boxes and restricting fast food from their diets (not a bad idea anyway!) Some are just big for their age and cannot fit in these categories. If you have any questions or concerns, please call any BYF Board member to discuss.
