GB Deaf Football Team Fund Raising
(taken from the Pollok forum)

Dear Fans of Junior Football,

I am a 19 years old student who has a slight high freq hearing loss, and have been a big fan of Junior football for many years supporting my local team, Pollok FC. I have enjoyed many Saturdays traveling the country following my team with all the highs and lows that this brings.

Throughout the years I have continued to play at youth level as a goalkeeper and in 2007 I was selected to represent my country with the Scotland Deaf Football Team. This has led to my inclusion in the 20 man squad of the GB Deaf Football team who as holders will defend their title at the 21st Deaflympics in Taiwan, September 2009.

I am really proud of this achievement but imagine my despair when I learned that Deaf Athletes do not currently get any funding from any source.

Unfortunately, unlike many British Olympic and Paralympic athletes, despite our World Champions status, we footballers and Britain’s deaf athletes receive no form of aid from the Government for training and there is no funding in sight to enable their participation at the Games. Each footballer is faced with a daunting financial hurdle of raising £3,000 to enable the GB Football team their richly deserved opportunity to compete- after all, GB Men are currently World Champions, having won the GOLD at the last Deaflympics, Great Britain beat Iran 2-1 in the final in Melbourne Australia to claim the gold medal

I am writing to you in hope that I can secure any donation from supporters of your Junior club. In return I will take a football top of the club with the most supporters who sponsor me to Taiwan and get it photographed at the Deaflympics, and any other sights I see. (maybe it will be Arthurlie, Tayport, Glenafton,Pollok or………………………?)

I myself have been following Pollok Juniors since I was a kid, and have met some wonderful people throughout the Junior game, and hope that some supporters will be able to spare something to help me reach the required £3,000 to be able to compete. If supporters wish to donate please go to the “Just Giving” site using the link below, could they also put the name of their Junior club next to their own name, so I can keep track of which club is leading the way with donations. Please help me get another mile closer to my dream.

I plan to organise many fundraising events over the next few months to try and raise as close to £3,000 as I can, which I understand is a huge amount to raise. Any donations small or large would help me take a step towards Taiwan 2009 and my dream of representing Great Britain.

Yours Sincerely,

Craig (Young PPCA)
