Tommy the Pundit Update - 07/04/08

Tommy The Pundit

Here is an update at how the Championship/Promotion spots are looking up and down the leagues.

Premier Division Champions – Meadow are still top of the league with 39 pts from 20 games and remaining games away to Pollok and Glenafton their title contenders. Pollok and Glenafton look to be favourites but they still have it all to do, and in a short space of time, if they can win their games in hand with 26 pts and 24 pts from 14 and 13 games respectively, but they would go 8 and 9 points respectively ahead of Meadow IF they win their games in hand including the games against Meadow. Talbot have 14 points from 11 games, and with their dip in form after exiting the Scottish the league is now surely beyond them.

Tommy’s Tip - Pollok

Premier Division Relegation – Kilsyth are only not relegated now due to Cumnock and Talbot not having played many games or picked up points recently but it is now inevitable.  Shotts now look certain to be in the bottom two barring a complete collapse from Cumnock and Talbot.Shotts – Remaining games: Home- Arthurlie and Glenafton Away- Auchinleck. Max – 28, Min 19.Kilsyth – Max – 19, Min 7.

Tommy’s Tips – Kilsyth and Shotts

Premier Division Play Off Technically right now you can avoid the play off with 33 points or 32 and a better goal difference than Bellshill. It may well end up that 28 points is enough, but this says volumes for how competitive the league has been this year. Lesser teams than Arthurlie and Bellshill wouldn’t have been able to turn around their seasons the way they have after their starts and it is a huge credit to their management teams that they have. Looking at it now and expecting Talbot to come good I think the play off is between Bellshill and Cumnock with the game between them now being huge.

Beith – Surely out of the woods now, it would take a strange turn of events for us to finish 3rd bottom now. Remaining games to take the points from – Home v Cumnock (home & away). Max – 36, Min 30.

Arthurlie – Arthurlie are pretty much out of it now as well I would think. Their remaning games –  Home v Pollok, Away – Shotts. Points diff to Beith -2, games in hand 0. Max – 34, Min – 28.

Bellshill – Take a win from last two games at home to Talbot and Cumnock and they will surely be safe as well. Points diff to Beith -4, games in hand 0. Max – 32, Min - 26

Neilston – The Farmers Boys should also be ok if they take some points from their remaining games. Games are Pollok (H),Talbot (H) and Glenafton (A), they have arguably the hardest run in). Points diff to Beith – -2, games in hand 1. Max – 37, Min – 28.

Cumnock – with 16 points from 13 games, they could arguably be in the title race and the relegation/play off battle. But with so many games to get the required points, it is looking too much for the title and they will be keen to get plenty of points on board to ease any play off worries. Even if they did end up their I’d fancy their chances against the First Division team.

Tommy’s Tip –Bellshill or Cumnock – the winner of that game should be safe..

1st Division Champions – Rob Roy have stuttered in recent weeks and must be thankful for the earlier lead they built up.

Tommy’s Tip – Rob Roy

1st Division 2nd Place – 2nd place is tighter than it was before due to dropped points by Vale of Clyde, with Kilbirnie, Kilwinning, Clydebank and Largs all still in the hunt.

Tommy’s Tip – Vale of Clyde- due to points on the board, but if anybody will catch them it is Kilbirnie.

1st Division Play Off – Looking at the names mentioned above.

Tommy’s Tip - Kilbirnie

1st Division Relegation – Burgh will need to perform to title winning form in the 2nd half of their league campaign if they want to avoid relegation and even then I think  it is too late. Next up looking likely is Troon in 2nd bottom place with 11 points after 17 games. 2nd bottom Maryhill with 13 points after 15 had a brief resurgence but this has slowed up and I think they are doomed. 4th bottom is Lesmahagow but they still have a few games on hand against other teams down there and should overtake Annbank. Renfrew have been getting some points under their belt and although teams have games on hand on them I think momentum is on their side.

Tommy’s tips –Burgh, Troon, Maryhil, Annbank

Ayrshire District League – This looks like a battle between Whitletts (35 from 16 -who came so close last year),Girvan (33 from 15),Hurlford (32 from 14) and Dalry (32 from 16).

Tommy’s Tip for 1st place – Hurlford, 2nd place – Girvan or Whitletts

Central District League Div 1 –Lanark top the division with 34 points from 14 games. Port Glasgow have 25 points from 13 and Cumbernauld and Ashfield have 26 points from 16.

Tommy’s Tip for 1st place – Lanark, 2nd place – Port Glasgow

Central District League Div 2 – Forth top the division with 29 points from 16 games closely followed by Vale of Leven with 28 points from 15, Cambuslang with 24 from 14.

Tommy’s Tip for 1st place – Vale of Leven, 2nd place – Forth.
