Beith Juniors FC: My Site News: Scottish Cup Rankings over Past 3 Seasons
Scottish Cup Rankings over Past 3 Seasons
| Having a look at the latest betting odds and where we were placed made me start to think about our recent record in the cup and how it compared to the teams above us. I've had a look at the last 3 years in the competition and compared what round each of the teams got to and who it was that knocked them out. First of all, we must look at how Beith have fared in this period before looking at other teams. | ||||||||||
| In 2002- 2003, we started off well with a 6-1 away victory over Islavale and continued our travels up north in the next round with a 3-0 victory over Lewis Utd. The 3rd round proceeded with a walkover over old Scottish Junior Cup foes Glasgow Perthshire. In the 4th round we then had our only home tie of the competition, albeit at Winton Park against division rivals Hurlford Utd and won a hard fought game 3-0. We then played Shettleston away in the 5th round with John Craig scoring from the rebound after his penalty was saved in a 1-0 victory. Beith had exceeded expectations by reaching the quarter final stage and were drawn away to the holders Linlithgow Rose, where despite a brief comeback were beaten 6-1 following 2 sending offs early in the second half. | ||||||||||
| In 2003-04, expectations were certainly higher after the previous season, however the first half of the season did not go too smoothly with Beith struggling to find a settled team and indeed it wasn't until our Scottish Cup exit that the season really got going for the club. The Scottish Cup campaign began with the relief of a 1st round bye, followed by a 3-1 home victory over Lanark Utd and the same scoreline against Vale of Clyde in round 3. Round 4 followed with away to Whitburn's conquerors in the 3rd round, Rutherglen Glencairn, with former Beith favourite Jimmy Gentles in their backline, they defeated us 2-1 at their own Southcroft Park. | ||||||||||
| In 2004-05, we again received a 1st round bye and were drawn against 1995 Cup winners Camelon in round 2. After a score-less draw at Bellsdale, Beith travelled East very much the underdogs and a penalty shoot out win following a 2-2 draw saw Beith progress to round 3. A home draw was the reward and Beith entertained Lochore Welfare and showed some good Beith hospitality with a 6-0 victory over our guests. With this result giving the team confidence after their stuttering form in the league, Beith then got the hardest draw possible with a tie against Tayport awaiting them. Beith certainly relished this tie and lost 2-0 with 2 goals in as many minutes after playing so well for the rest of the game, left many neutrals commenting on Beith's lack of luck on the day. Now Beith are fresh from that challenge and indeed have ambitions of playing against teams of this calibre on a more regular basis to continue their progression. | ||||||||||
| Now looking at other teams, it was important not to try and cherry pick any information so if you look at the table overleaf you will see a summarised breakdown of how each of the teams ranked with the same or better, betting odds have fared in the last three years with the important information of who it was that eliminated them from the competition. It makes quite interesting reading and makes some of the odds look a bit of place with some of the teams' performance in the Scottish Cup. Now of course, we must not forget that the level of league and amount of money already bet on each team will have an influence but even given that it is hard not to look at it and think Beith are being under-valued. This is of course a common complaint from Beith fans and I'm sure of other teams not quite recognised as being in the top echelons of the junior game but looking at the table it is hard not to agree with it. | ||||||||||
| You will notice that I have ordered the table according to ranking points. The basis for these are as follows, with every round progressed a point is gained, from a 1st round exit earning zero points to the eventual trophy win earning 8 points. It is therefore no surprise to see Tayport top the table after 2 trophy wins (8 points each) and 1 runners up place (7 points) in the past 3 years making up 23 points. Beith's own points are made up of 1 quarter final appearance (5 points) and two 4th round exits (3 points each) making up a respectable top 8 score of 11 points. This leaves Beith out performing teams as high as 8/1 Arthurlie, 12/1 Bathgate & Whitburn, 14/1 Glenafton and all teams from 16/1 to 33/1, a total of 24 teams ranked by the bookmakers with the same or better odds than us. It must be said Clydebank are at a slight advantage in that they were not involved in the 2002-03 competition. | ||||||||||
