Marauders Fall in State Semis to Eventual Champs
The previously unbeaten and state-ranked No. 1 New York Mills boys basketball team was upset by Maple Grove 56-50 in today's Class D semifinals of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
The Marauders, who finished 23-1, were trying to win their first state title since 1982. They led only three times today, twice in the second half after trailing by as many as 16 in the first period.
Junior forward Fred Russ scored 12 first-half points and New York Mills outscored Maple Grove 9-0 in the last five minutes of the half as the Marauders rallied from 16 down and trailed only 24-23 at haftlime. Russ led New York Mills with 17 points.
Maple Grove led 21-9 after one period, but New York Mills outscored the Red Dragons 14-3 in the second period and held them scoreless for the last five minutes.
New York Mills shooters got off to a 1-for-8 start and the Marauders had trouble getting the ball inside Maple Grove's collapsing zone defense. But 6-foot-8 sophomore Matt Welch got New York Mills off to a fast second-quarter start with a foul-line jumper and a 3-pointer. The Marauders, whose only lead was 3-2, nearly took the halftime lead when a 3-point try by Ed Schulze rimmed out at the buzzer.
New York Mills led only briefly in the second half, 35-34 late in the third period and 48-46 when Matt Dziekan hit a 3-pointer with 2:40 remaining. Maple Grove star Chris Secky, who finished with 20 points, tied it with an offensive rebound and put-back and then converted a steal into the go-ahead free throw with 1:47 left to play. New York Mills didn't score again until Jeff Albright's layup with 16.4 seconds remaining.
Maple Grove (15-8), the Class C state champ two years ago, went on to defeat Section IX champ John A. Coleman Catholic of Hurley for the Class D state title 43-38. Coleman Catholic's state-ranked No. 2 Statesmen (20-2) defeated No. 5 Germantown 70-50 in Friday's first semifinal. Jake Palmer, Coleman Catholic's first-ever 1,000-point scorer, led the Statesmen with 20 points.
