Where did we come from??
Logan City Gridiron Football Club Inc. That is our name today and has been for the past few years, but you need to go back to the late '88 when the plans for the formation of our club were born to find out our real history.
The "Annerley Tigers" were formed by a gent named Mike Crawley. Primarily a junior team they proved to be successful from the moment of conception.
After a season or two, the club moved to the Logan area, the suburb of Rochdale became their home for many a year.
Through the early to mid 90's, the Tigers/Bengals were the team to beat in both juniors and seniors, the juniors won titles in both the winter and summer State Gridiron Competitions. The seniors were not far behind them and were crowned Sun Bowl Champions in 1991.
Although not able to repeat Championship status, both juniors and seniors were serious contenders when playoff time rolled around for the remainder of the 90's
Season 2000 was a year of rebuilding for the club. Player numbers were good, but we were stale, coaching and leadership on and off the field let everybody down.
In November of 2000 a few people could see that the club had a future, but just needed a few changes.
Early 2001 and a field had been found, an A.G.M. was held and a new executive was formed. An idea was proposed to the club from a few players who wanted to have some fun again and remove some of the unrealistic ideas that were imposed upon them at their old club.
A proposed name change was accepted, "The Barbarians" were born. New colours, new ideals and a totally new direction was taken and proved to be very successful.
Juniors (Buccaneers) and Seniors both made the playoffs but were bundled out.
2002 season saw the rifinement of the club ethos, "Have fun" which removed a lot of the pressure to win at any cost. The Seniors (Barbarians) and juniors (Buccaneers) both made the playoffs again with the juniors making it through to challenge the Ravens for the Junior State Championship title. With the numerically smallest team in the competition against the Ravens numerically largest, the Buccaneers came away worthy winners in a close fought encounter 30 - 20.
2003 and the club fought on again with the same vigour that was becoming legendary throughout Gridiron Queensland. The Barbarians finished second on the ladder at the completion of the domestic season and were victors over every team in the competition.
2004 and a new merger with our host club, Browns Plains Bears Rugby League sees yet another name change to "Bears Gridiron". Helping Gridiron Queensland celebrate 20 years, we are also celebrating 17 years of continued incorporation.
