2009 Bears Expansion
The Bears Gridiron Club is very please and excited to announce the expansion plans for our clubs growth. In 2009 our Kenmore venue will be our “Base of Operations”. Our Bears senior team will be will again be playing out of this venue with a junior team. All season games will be played at this venue as a part of a two way commitment with our hosts, Kenmore rugby Union, for future stability.
Adding to this, our Browns Plains Juniors will be joined by a Bears Club Expansion Senior Team, “The Bruins” who will be debuting in the 2009 Gridiron Queensland Domestic Season as a seventh senior team. Although they will be a Bears Club Team, they will operate independently from the Bears based at Kenmore.
The Bruins will be under club control and they will be guided by the Management Committee. They will compete and play against the Bears in the domestic season.
The Bruins have been fortunate enough to secure the services of Adam Campbell as Head Coach. Coach Campbell has vast experience at club and National level back in his native New Zealand. He has held the position of Head Coach of the NZ Haka National Team.
The Bears are also in negotiations with another venue for the possible expansion to a third junior team somewhere in the Mt Gravatt area.
As a matter of urgency, the club is also investigating options on creating a new website with a dedicated webmaster. We believe that this will help us with promotion and information distribution as we continue to expand and spread the word of this great sport.
Very exciting times for the Bears as a club in the 2009 season! Stay tuned for updates and more news as it becomes available.

Bruins Logo
The Bruins will be wearing our club colours when they take the field in 2009, but with some subtle differences.
In an attempt to maintain seperate identities for our senior teams, the Bruins will be wearing a white jersey with black numbers. Black pants, helmet and socks will be constant, but the helmet logo will also be different.
Here are samples of the "Bruin Logo" and "Bruin Script" to be used for the team.

2008 Campaign Ends
The Bears campaign for Sun Bowl success in both juniors and seniors has come to an end.The juniors bowed out in the first round of the play-offs with a gutsy, but close loss to the Rhinos 34-30. The seniors overcame great odds in the first round to win against a very determined Ravens team 21-14. Last night, in the longest recorded game in Gridiron Queensland history, the senior Bears were beaten by the Rhinos in an epic, 4 hour and 55 minute game in quadruple overtime. Two lightning stoppages and a severe injury stoppage didn’t help. Both Bears teams can hold their heads up high as they again mounted solid challenges for the Championship (No other team in Logan can claim that!) The Bears club would like to congratulate all players and coaching staff for their efforts for the 2008 season. We would also like to express our gratitude to our loyal supporters who have braved dramatic heat and torrential rain to cheer on our teams this season! To the players, enjoy your break and we will see you in a few months for the start of the 2009 campaign!

Round 11 Bears Seniors v Wildcats
The Bears went into battle on Saturday against their Logan rivals the Wildcats. With both teams part of a three way tie for third place on the ladder it was a must win in order to stay in the hunt for a finals berth. The Bears welcomed back starting QB #16 Jade Wiki-Arapeta, won the coin toss and elected to receive the ball. The opening drive making good yards in the air and on the ground before a wayward pass was intercepted by the Wildcats secondary inside their red zone. The Bears D made their way onto the field and true to form were off again within moments with another crushing three and out series. The Bears offensive were forced to play ironman football with the absence of a few O-linemen, #51 Chris Mooney, #70 Scott Reuter, #94 Isarra Nuuola and #75 Kel Howsan leading by example playing both ways for much of the game. The Defense again led by in form LB #55 Matt Siaosi made life miserable for the Wildcats only allowing a handful of plays to gain yards and forcing several turnovers including three interceptions, two forced fumbles recovered, numerous sacks and a safety. The offense showing they can certainly score points also show casing this seasons rookie talent with #12 Bart Foley scoring on the second drive with a powerful run behind his blockers to go thirty yards for the first TD of the game. WRs #53 Jeremy Lindeblad and #84 Kyle Scoble were also in the mix making strong yards after the reception with Jeremy scoring two TDs and a two point conversion and Kyle catching a perfect pass in full stride to beat the DB down the sideline. #43 Chris McCormack adding to the tally , scoring his own TD on a the back of some good running. #75 Kel Howsan topped it of with a power run for the two point conversion. Check out the more comprehensive game footage at http://www.youtube.com/user/Dingobabyboy with thanks to Nick Day and his camera work. The final score of 36-0 was a well deserved result for the Bears and is the defensive units second consecutive shut-out. Head Coach Phil Crick commented "that his team has turned the corner and with the finals only a couple of weeks away we are positioned well for our run at the Sunbowl". This week the Bears travel back to Ipswich to face the Cougars a win will secure the teams place in the their third consecutive finals apperance.

Round 10 Bears Seniors v Ravens
The Bears faced the Ravens on a hot spring afternoon at Kenmore in a battle for outright third. The Ravens coming off a two game winning streak were keen to notch up their second only ever victory over the Bears, the Bears coming off a weather interrupted draw against the Stingrays were keen to take the win and move into outright third on the GQ ladder. The Bears O still without starting QB Wiki-Arapeta had first possession and managed to move the chains with some good rushing yards before stalling and having to punt away. The Bears D stepped onto the field for another tradmark three and out series. The Ravens defense played out their feathers shutting down the outside run and making things difficult for the WR's most of the game. Fill in QB#7 Vip Amin connected with receivers #53 Jeremy (CP) Lindeblad and #24 Aaron Dati for some great first downs to keep the Ravens guessing while #75 Kel Howsan & #51 Chris Mooney filled in at FB for some strong inside running and big blocking for #43 Chris McCormack. The majority of the game was played between the 30yd lines with neither team being able to break into the redzone. Both teams making big plays at crucial times and forcing turnovers Bear #55 Matt Siaosi forcing a fumble on a punt return and recovering it and grabbing another intercepton to give the Offence good field position. With under 2 minutes in the game the Ravens punter nailed a deep kick which left the field at the Bears 4yd line giving the O one last attempt to drive the length of the field for the game winner. A combination of bruising runs by #75 Kel Howsan and #43 Chris McCormack allowed the WR's to find some open field. #1 Jai Churchill stepped back into the QB role finding #24 Aaron Dati on a corner route for a huge 1st down, a dubious flag going in favour of the Bears added 15 yds to the end of the run. Now with less then one minute to go the Bears were on the Ravens 35 yd line with only two timeouts, a toss to #43 Chris McCormack earned another 1st down and stopped the clock inside the 25 yd two FB dives to #51 Mooney put the Bears on the 10 yd line with no timeouts remaining. The Bears O line determined to cross the endzone drove the Ravens front seven back allowing #51 Chris Mooney to rumble past the pile and into the endzone for the TD. But then it happened, a flag! Holding on the O line denied the TD and with time running out the only option for the Bears was to attempt their first FG of the season which was blocked! The Ravens taking over possession kneeled out the final seconds resulting in a tied game Bears 0 - Ravens 0. Footage of the game can be viewed at http://au.youtube.com/user/Dingobabyboy thanks to Nick Day. This week the Bears look forward to the return of Wiki-Arapeta in the local derby clash against the Wildcats to help resurrect their season and make a solid push for the play offs. The Wildcats took the earlier meeting 14-8 and are coming off a close win over the Cougars so this should be a classic Slug Fest!!

Round 9 Bears Seniors v Stingrays
The Bears travelled to the Gold Coast on Saturday to face the undefeated Stingrays. With the Stingrays form looking a little ordinary of late the Bears were keen to stake their claim as legitimate Sunbowl contenders with an upset win and with dark ominous clouds forming directly above the Runaway Bay complex the scene was set. The Bears took the field without gun RB #43 Chris McCormack which meant another shuffle of positions with #75 Kel Howsan and #51 Chris Mooney chosen to fill in at RB for the game. The Stingrays offense with first possesion of the game drove the ball down the field to open the scoring with a passing TD followed by the extra point to lead 7-0. The Bears now with a chance to even the score combined strong runs by #75 Kel Howsan and passing by rookie QB #7 Vip Amin, only to stall and have to punt away. The Bears D re-focused after allowing a TD in the opening series made life tough for the Stingrays forcing them to punt on the next few series. Some great pass coverage by #47 Shane (Smiley) Crawford, #5 Caleb (Cub) Reed and #12 Bart Foley upset the usually flawless passing attack of the Stingrays. #55 Matt Siaosi led the rush D with another display of brutal tackles and #94 Isarra Nu'uola proving a handful on both sides of the line. Some great pressure by the D-line allowed #89 Andrew Lindeblad to add to his impessive sack tally bringing #5 Kyle low down for a big loss. The second quarter began with the Bears moving the chains behind some strong running by #51 Chris Mooney and #75 Kel Howsan beating the D-line for good yards. Unable to score the Bears punted the ball deep and forced it on the Stingrays four yard line. A strong tackle by #46 Phillip Chongnee put pressure on the Stingrays O before they again found their rythem and combined a series of run and pass plays to drive the length of the field for a rushing TD (only the fourth rushing TD allowed by the Bears this season). The extra point was wide, score 13-0. With time running out in the half the Bears O led by #7 Vip Amin put together a strong drive with #12 Bart Foley making two pass completions amongst safeties for first downs before a late hit by the Stingrays moved the ball to within the ten yard line. With seconds remaining in the half and out of timeouts #75 Kel Howsan crashed into the Stingrays defense only to be pulled down three yards short of scoring. A no huddle Offense attempted to spike the ball for one last attempt to score before half time, however time was ruled to have expired in the process. The score remained 13-0 to the Stingrays. The half time show complete with a spectacular lightening show delayed the resumption of play for a further thirty minutes, at which time the Officals under NCAA rules called the game. The final result being a 0-0 draw as the second half did not commence. This un-expected result has the Bears sitting in third place on the ladder. Our next game is against the Ravens who are tied with the Bears on points so the winner will take outright third position on the table. Highlights of the game can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/user/Dingobabyboy provided by Nick Day.

Round 8 Bears Seniors v Rhinos
The Bears played their first home game for of the season against the Rhinos on Saturday. The game started poorly for the Bears with the opening kickoff returned for a touchdown. This is the first time in the Bears history that this has occurred. The two point conversion was successful and the the Rhinos took a 8-0 lead after only a minute of play. The Bears D stepped onto the field eager to make amends forcing a fast and brutal three and out series returning the ball to the Offense. With starting QB Jade Wiki-Arapeta on the injured list #7 Vip Amin started his first game at the QB position. Unfortunately it was a horror start throwing a pick on third down which was returned 15 yards for a second touchdown, with the two point conversion successful the Bears were behind 16-0 after three minutes of play in the game. The Bears offense was back on the field and keen to make amends for the poor start moved the ball with some crisp passing and power running by #43 Chris McCormack which colminated in a fifty yard. Three play later #7 Vip Amin scored on a QB run, with the two point conversion unsuccessful the Rhinos led 16-6. Bears D returned to the field for another display of power defense with linebacker #55 Matt Siaosi forcing the first of many fumbles. Both teams traded possesion for the rest of the half without further scoring. Other hi-lites of the half include #47 Shane (Smiley) Crawford's interception, #51 Chris Mooneyon punt return where he cleaned up two Rhinos with one thumping hit and a fumble recovery by rookie #89 Andrew Lindeblad. The second half began with #7 Vip Amin finding his receivers, with #53 Jeremy Lindeblad proving a handful for the DBs making valuable yardage after the reception on several occassions. The O-line led by #70 Scott Reuter found a second wind opening running lanes for #43 Chris McCormack. The third quarter ened without either team adding to the score line. The fourth quarter began with #47 Shane (Smiley) Crawford intercepting another deep pass and returning it thirty yards. #43 Chris McCormack showing again why he is one of the best RBs in the league scoring on a twenty yard run untouched, behind a tired but determined Bears O-line. A fumbled two point attempt left the score at 16-12. The Bears D lifted and seemed impenetrable stuffing the Rhinos running game, and busting up pass plays, forcing turnovers. With time running out the Bears Offense were determined to score the winning points but fell short. The Rhinos O returned to the field with a minute to play and twenty yards out from the Bears endzone, paid the ultimate compliment by opting to kneel out the remainder of the game. Head Coach Phil Crick commented that "despite the poor start to the game and allowing two TDs early, our defense stood up to the task and did not allow the Rhinos offense to score". He was also impressed by how thw Offense rallied behind rookie QB Vip Amin moving the ball and scoring twice against the tough Rhinos defense. Highlights from the game can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/user/Dingobabyboy this footage was provided by Bears supporter Nick Day. The Bears will look to carry this effort into next weeks clash against the undefeated GC Stingrays.

Round 7 Bears Seniors v Cougars
The start of Round 2 saw the re-match of the season opener 6-6 draw between the Cougars and Bears. The Bears D led by linebackers #51 Chris Mooney and #55 Matt Siaosi started strongly with a three and out handing possesion to the Offense in good field position. The Offense went to work with the O-line opening running lanes for #43 Chris McCormack who took advantage with good yardage. QB #16 Jade Wiki-Arapeta also completed passes to his receivers to keep the chains moving. The Bears scored in the first quarter after some powerful runs by #43 Chris McCormack and #75 Kelvin Howsan to drive the ball down field. #43 Chris McCormack crossing untouched for the first score of the game. An incomplete extra point attempt made the score 6-0. After the kick off the Bears D again flexed their muscle for another three and out allowing the Offense back onto the field. Again the power running of #43 Chris McCormack and #75 Kelvin Howsan combined with some great catch and run yards by #53 Jeremy Lindeblad took the Bears into the Cougars redzone in the second quarter, however a fumble by #75 Kelvin Howsan handed the ball back to the Cougars on the one yard line. A strong rush by the Bears Defense caused a hurried pass by the Cougars QB which was tipped and then intercepted by #5 Caleb Reed who returned the ball ten yards for another TD. #75 Kelvin Howsan keen to make amends for his fumble stormed in for the two point conversion for a 14-0 lead to Bears going into the long break. The start of the third quarter saw the Bears defense limiting the Cougars attack and contributing to several sacks of the Ipswich QB including three to #75 Kelvin Howsan. However late in the 3rd quarter the Bears front seven seemed to hit the snooze button allowing the Cougars to move the ball with a sustained drive and gave up any chance of a shut out victory. The Cougars scored a converted touchdown to make the score 14-7. The Bears Offense continued to work the field but were unable to add to the score. Bears Defense denied the Cougars any further chance of scoring by confining them to their own half of the field for the remainder of the game. The final score being a 14-7 victory to the Bears. To see the game footage click on .com/user/Dingobabyboy which has been provided by Nick Day. Next week the Bears are at home for the first time this season and take on the Rhinos. This has always been a hard tough clash and next week will be no different.

Round 6 Bears Seniors v Wildcats
An understrength Bears travelled to Banyo to take on the Wildcats. The Wildcats took the ball first and drove it down the field to score and take a 7-0 lead. The Bears offense was stalled with a combination of dropped catches and turnovers meaning missed opportunties in the first quarter. The Bears defense was solid forcing the Wildcats to punt on several occassions. The second quarter started with the Bears moving the ball down the field with some clutch catches by the receivers and hard running from #43 Chris Mc Cormack. The Bears defense was finding its rythem forcing the Wildcats offense to punt on several occasions. A key turnover late in the second quarter gave the Wildcats an opportunity to score which they took giving them a 14-0 lead at the long break. Injuries to key players forced a reshuffle of the offense with #7 Vip Amin starting QB and rookie #12 Bart Foley at TB. The third quarter sparked the Bears into life with the recievers catching passes and gaining valuable yardage. Rookie TB #12 Bart Foley also was running like a man possesed. He was rewarded with a tough 30 yard touchdown run and #1 Jai Churchill caught the extra points making the score 14-8. The Bears tough defense led by #70 Scott Reuter and #55 Matt Siaosi were punishing in stopping the Wildcats from scoring in the third and fourth quarter. Rookie brothers #53Jeremy (CP) Lindeblad, #61 Ben Lindeblad and #89 Andrew Lindeblad each recorded a sack of the Wildcats QB. Defensive coach Dave Waller commented "that in all the years that he has played and coached in the sport he has never witnessed three brothers recording sacks in the one game". The Bears offense was unable to score again leaving the final score at 14-8 in favour of the Wildcats. Head Coach Phil Crick commented that he "was disappointed at the result but not the effort, especially from the players who played out of position and were forced to play both ways due to injuries". Next week the Bears travel to Birkdale to take on the Cougars. A win will consolidate a spot in the top four.
Thursday, August 21
Snr Bears v Ravens Round 4
Round 4 and the Bears travelled to Banyo to take on the Ravens for Round 1 of the Fur and Feathers Trophy. Missing half the Offensive line and some key players from the tough D it was shaping up to be another test for the Bears. A shaky opening series allowed the Ravens Offense to move the ball to the Bears red zone. Then two penalties from the defense allowed the Ravens two first downs which they took advantage of and scored the first points of the night. The extra point was blocked by Bears line man #94 Isarra Nuuola. This awoke the Bears D from hibernation and they refused to let the Ravens offense move the ball into our half for the remainder of the game. Defensive Coach Dave Waller was very impressed with the defense, with special mention to rookies #89 Andrew Lindeblad and #68 Matt Houston. The Bears pass defense showed the most improvement, pass break ups, and big tackles led by #47 Shane (Smiley) Crawford and interceptions to #24 Aaron Dati and #51 Chris Mooney. The Bears Offense led by QB #16 Jade Wiki-Arapeta played possesed. On the ground #43 Chris Mc Cormack mixed power with agility to pick up the big yards at will, he also scored his first touchdown of the season. But the strike weapon of the night was the #1 Jai Churchill who caught three touchdowns and an extra point. QB #16 Wiki-Arapeta also threw another touchdown pass to #34 Derek Leask who was concussed after the catch and had to leave the game. Rookie receiver #45 Peter Rainbird was unlucky to have his first TD reception flagged away. Special teams again gained valuable yards on the punt and kick returns with rookie #24 Aaron Dati using his speed and blockers to gain valuable yardage. The chase teams also played well limiting punt and kick return yards from the Ravens. Head Coach Phil Crick was pleased overall with the teams effort but stressed that the team needs to improve its play from the opening whistle. Next week is the league bye with the team able to rest up and be ready to play the ever improving Wildcats team the following week.
Wednesday, August 13
Round 3 v Stringrays
Sunbowl replay. This week the Bears traveled to the sunny Gold Coast for the round 3 fixture against reigning Sunbowl Champions the Stingrays. Missing Sate rep players DE #75 Kelvin Howsan, RB #43 Chris McCormack and OL #79 Nathan Wilson it was going to be an ironman performance by some of the more experienced Bears players to lift the the rookies. Learning from last weeks mistakes the DBs came out with a point to prove and although letting an early passing TD in the first quarter were up to the task of limiting the scoring opportunities from the potent QB - WR combinations af the Stingrays. The Offence proved they can produce results with several first downs earned on the back of some tuff running by rookie RB's #38 Alexander Foote and #12 Bart Foley, who followed the blocks of the offensive line. The WR's had some key receptions as well with QB #1 Jai Churchill finding the mark to earn first downs against a strong Stingrays secondary. The second quarter saw the Bears O drive the ball from inside their own 20 yard line to threaten the Stingrays endzone only to miss on a 4th and 1 turnover. The Bears front 7 on Defense again made it hard for the opposing teams Offense, all but shutting down the running game. The Stingrays found themselves within the scoring distance late in the second quarter before being forced to attempt a field goal on fourth and goal which went astray. Turning the ball over to the Bears O who marched the ball down the field to inside the Stingrays ten yard line only to have time expire in the half. The third quarter started in a flury with both teams determined to be the next to score. But some tuff defense from both teams resulted in several punts from both teams. Late in the third quarter the Stingrays found themselves first and goal on the Bears five yard line when a determined Bear goal line resulted in a crushing hit by #51 Chris Mooney on fourth down dislodged the ball from the RB handing possession back to the Bears. Defensive Coach Dave Waller commented that " it was the toughest goaline stance he had seen in a long time". Special mention must go the special teams unit, being forced to punt on several occassions they gave up very little yards on returns and also recovered a fumbled punt. The Stingrays QB was constantly under pressure with sacks to #55 Matt Siaosi and #48 Greg Bidgood, Bidgood sack forcing a fumble which was recovered by #36 Jason Whittaker. Siaosi also bagged an interception to give the offense another shot in the fourth quarter only to turn the ball over to Stingrays on a fumble. With the score at 7 - 0 with around 4 min to play in the fourth quarter, the Bears started to show signs of fatigue coupled with injuries to key players forced some positional changes which ultimately lead to two rapid TDs to the Stingrays, the first an off tackle run and the second a quick pass down the side line. Head Coach Phil Crick was full of praise for his teams efforts especially those who were forced to play out of position late in the game. The Bears finished the game with a sense of pride knowing they certainly shook the undefeated Stingrays on their home turf and look forward to their next encounter. Round 4 and the Bears are on the road again, this time back to Banyo to face the Ravens in what is shaping up to be an exciting clash.

G.Q. Season Award Winners
Two Bears were recognised for their season efforts yesterday at the Gridiron Queensland Season Awards.
Kenmore Bears junior Quarterback Jared Stegman proved to all this season that he is the undisputed best quarterback in the State with a double collection of the "Most Valuable Player on the Offense" and the "League Most Valuable Player" awards. Jared was an absolute standout in all games this season, with no other person within the league having close to the same amount of impact on a game! Jared, a first year player, also polled well in the "Rookie of the Year" votes. Jared is very eager to make his debut as a senior in 2008 and so is the club.
Bears senior player, Jason Nolan was awarded the award for "Offensive Back of the Year" for his efforts during the season. A first year senior player from the very successful Bears junior program, Jason tore apart all defenses thrown at him in a spectacular display of power running.

SunBowl XXIII
The Bears finished second in SunBowl XXIII against the Gold Coast Stingrays.
After and explosive start out of the blocks (leading 7-0 after a strong opening drive) the Stingrays experience took over and started to grind the Bears down. With a 14-7 halftime lead, the Stingrays over shaddowed the Bears and made the second half their own. With a lot of skill and a little luck, the Stingrays took the game with a final scoreline of 30-7.
Although beaten on the scoreboard, the Bears were not as easielly beaten on the field. The Stingrays were able to turn 3 turnovers/interceptions into points which the Bears could not recover from.
An exciting game to watch, with the Bears stringing along some promising drives and punnishing defense across the entire game.
Congratulations to Coach Phil Crick and the team for making the "Big Dance"
There is always next year!

The Bears today overcame the Rhinos and have advanced to the Gridiron Queensland SunBowl XXIII.
Not since the mid '90's have a senior team from this club made it to "The Big Dance"
The Bears were able to take an early lead with a strong fullback dive from Chris Mooney to open the account for the home team. The Bears Defense denied all Rhinos attempts to score in the first half. Going into the long break with a handy, but not strong 6-0 lead, the Bears knew the second half is were they need to step up a notch or two to secure the game. This they were able to do with good combinations of passing and running. A touchdown pass to receiver Shaun Hunter was able to give the Bears a 12-0 buffer with only a few minutes remaining. The Rhinos came back strong and with some fierce determination, they crossed the line to threaten the Bears, but not finish them off. With a final scoreline of 12-6, the Bears make their way to the Gold Coast next week to tackle the giant Gold Coast Stingrays on their home turf. With the expected return of a few key players who missed this weeks game through injury, the Bears are confident of fielding a team capable of being this seasons "Giant Killers" and causing an upset over the dominant Stingrays!
All Bears supporters are expected to be on-hand for the game which kicks-off at 3pm.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BEARS!

Two out of Three ain't Bad
The regular season is over and the Bears are well represented in the Gridiron Queensland Play-Off series with Kenmore juniors and the Senior Bears finishing in the top four (No other team in Logan can claim that!!!!!)
The Kenmore Bears tackle the Wildcats in the elimination final. Finding it hard to hit a good form after losing strike QB Jared Stegman (Best QB in the league in passing and running!). A swarming and aggressive Defense have stepped up towards the business end of the season and are helping the Offense find their form. A big ask for this rookie team to defeat the Wildcats, but in football, anything can happen.
The senior Bears tackle our long time rivals, the Bayside Ravens. No Play-Off experience in the Ravens camp, but certainly a team not to be underestinated. The Ravens have made the Play-Offs, so that tells everyone they are doing something right! The Bears have worked through their injury plagued middle of the season and are putting strong numbers back onto the field. A smothering Defense and a hard hitting linebacking crew made every team really earn their yeards. The Offense, led by Chris McCormack's power running are in a fantastic rhythm and keen to progress from the elimination round.
All Play-Off games are being played on Saturday 3rd November at Ipswich. Kenmore Bears kick-off at 12MD and the Senior Bears take on the Ravens at 7PM.
Congratulations to both teams and all Bears fans are urged to attend the games!
On a side note, the Bears would like to congratulate the Ravens on their senior teams maiden Play-Off appearence.
