Junior Bears Remain Undefeated!

After 4 rounds of the 2008 season, the Bears juniors remain undefeated. A close and hard fought game against the Gold Coast Stingrays last Saturday saw the top of the table clash for not only bragging rights, but also undisputed ladder leader’s. The game was an outstanding example of junior football in Queensland with neither team giving quarter. Both offenses were explosive and defense on both teams was an exciting mix of big hits and pack hunting. The Stingrays were the first to score with a strong passing game. They were able to move the ball with good patterns and strong running. The much smaller Bears defense took a little time to adjust to their bigger opponents. But, adjust they did. The Bears offense were able to move the ball the entire length of the field towards the end of the opening half, only to fall short, 1 yard shy of a score leveling touchdown just as the halftime whistle sounded. The halftime break was exactly what the Bears needed to regroup. Taking the ball first in the 2nd half, the Bears drove the ball with strong running from #9 Sean Allsop and #8 Dwayne Urquhart. Just as the Stingrays adjusted to the running game, the Bears switched to a short passing game to keep the yards and the game clock ticking over. A 7yard pass to #9 Allsop opened the Bears account. The 2 point conversion was also successful also to #9 Allsop. The Bears took control of the game from this point, forcing the Stingrays to punt on all subsequent possessions. The Bears took control of the game and again marched the length of the field but were denied scoring as the time in the game expired. The game was drawn at 8 all, but is viewed as a win by the Bears as the signs of a strong and promising future for this young team continues. Best players for the Bears were the entire team! “Although we have not been defeated this season, we have not been playing as a complete unit until today” said Head Coach Peter Farrar after the game. This week, the league has a competition bye. Next game is scheduled against the ever improving Rhinos.

Snr Bears v Ravens Round 4

Round 4 and the Bears travelled to Banyo to take on the Ravens for Round 1 of the Fur and Feathers Trophy. Missing half the Offensive line and some key players from the tough D it was shaping up to be another test for the Bears. A shaky opening series allowed the Ravens Offense to move the ball to the Bears red zone. Then two penalties from the defense allowed the Ravens two first downs which they took advantage of and scored the first points of the night. The extra point was blocked by Bears line man #94 Isarra Nuuola. This awoke the Bears D from hibernation and they refused to let the Ravens offense move the ball into our half for the remainder of the game. Defensive Coach Dave Waller was very impressed with the defense, with special mention to rookies #89 Andrew Lindeblad and #68 Matt Houston. The Bears pass defense showed the most improvement, pass break ups, and big tackles led by #47 Shane (Smiley) Crawford and interceptions to #24 Aaron Dati and #51 Chris Mooney. The Bears Offense led by QB #16 Jade Wiki-Arapeta played possesed. On the ground #43 Chris Mc Cormack mixed power with agility to pick up the big yards at will, he also scored his first touchdown of the season. But the strike weapon of the night was the #1 Jai Churchill who caught three touchdowns and an extra point. QB #16 Wiki-Arapeta also threw another touchdown pass to #34 Derek Leask who was concussed after the catch and had to leave the game. Rookie receiver #45 Peter Rainbird was unlucky to have his first TD reception flagged away. Special teams again gained valuable yards on the punt and kick returns with rookie #24 Aaron Dati using his speed and blockers to gain valuable yardage. The chase teams also played well limiting punt and kick return yards from the Ravens. Head Coach Phil Crick was pleased overall with the teams effort but stressed that the team needs to improve its play from the opening whistle. Next week is the league bye with the team able to rest up and be ready to play the ever improving Wildcats team the following week.

The Bears Gridiron Club is thrilled to announce that long time club sponsor, Origin Kebabs, have agreed to continue their support of the club.
Origin Kebabs have been sponsors of the Bears for the last three seasons and this will continue.

Their usual support will continue at all home games in 2008, but with an added bonus.
More news on the bonus sponsorship as the season draws nearer!

"Our club would really find things difficult each year without support and sponsorship from great companies such as Origin Kebabs" said club President Peter Farrar at his announcement of the news. He went on to add "Our club family has prospered due to the support shown by Origin Kebabs over the past few years and with this new deal, we will continue to grow into the future".

All Bears are reminded to support those who support us!
