It's the off-season and you are taking a break from conditioning????
It's the off-season and you are taking a break - Right?  WRONG!!!  Start building your arm and abdominal strength while you have time.  As soon as the snow clears - start your cardiovascular!!  You have to report IN SHAPE in August NOT report to get into shape in August. Reporting out of shape for any sport is not a good idea. Endurance and strength are important in all sports. So read both sides of this letter and start your training today. Training is not about what you can do today, but the journey you take to where you will be in August.    Think you are in shape?

Endurance:
  • Can you do 10 – 10 yard sprints with a 5 second rest between sprints?
  • Can you do 10 – 20 yard sprints with a 10 second rest between sprints?
  • Rest 2 minutes and do it again.
  • Note:  A sprint is an all out run as hard as you can go.  It is not a jog or an easy run.
  Strength:
  • 10 Proper Form Pushups, rest 30 seconds and then do another 10 proper form pushups.
  • 10 Leg Lifts with your legs/knees straight and your feet 6 inches from the ground, rest 30 seconds and do 10 more.

Whether or not you can do the full workout above is not the point.  If you can, great, if you can’t, that is great too.  Training is about the journey from where you are today to where you will be in August when you report.  Start a chart on paper or on your computer.  Each day of training, mark down the date and day and the times of your sprints or repetitions (pushups, leg lifts) you can do.  Watch your improvement over time.  Do not expect immediate improvement.  Training takes weeks, not days.    Even if you can do all the workouts above, see if you can improve on them.  See if you can increase your speed, or improve on your strength.  If you can do the (proper form) pushups, then add weight like a phonebook on your back, or little brother or sister.  Improvement is the key to your success.

Get Ready – Endurance/Quickness!

There are two types of training you can do to build the endurance you are going to need.

  1. Endurance: Long distance running to build lung capacity and endurance into your muscles.
  2. Quickness: Short, quick bursts of speed to train your body to reaction situations.

 Long Distance:

We suggest starting with 2 distances:

  • Quarter Mile (once around the High School Track)
  • Half Mile (twice around the High School Track)

Time yourself for these distances.  It doesn’t matter how long it takes you.  If you have to walk part way, that is fine.  But be honest with your times.  Go to the track and time yourself, mark down the date and day and your times for each distance.

Now comes the training.  You don’t have to go to the track to run.  Run right from your house.  Put on some sweats (during the spring) and some running shoes and plan a route that covers 2 miles that comes back to your house.  To help you with this go to this website (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ ) to plan your route.  Most of you won’t be able to run the entire way.  It doesn’t matter.  Just cover the route 3 times a week.  Run for as long as you can.  Walk for 2 minutes.  Then begin to run again.  When you get too tired to run, walk again for 2 minutes.  Continue this until you cover the 2 miles.  Do this at least 3 times a week.

Once a week go back up to the High School and time yourself in the quarter and half mile and see if you have improved.  Don’t expect improvement the first week.  You might not even see improvement the second week.  But if you try your hardest during your runs during the week, you should start to see some improvement by the third week.  No matter what happens, great improvement or little to no improvement, keep up your running.  It will only help you when you report in August.

Quickness:

Many sports have quick bursts of speed and then short rests.  You must train your body for this type of activity.

Always start quick bursts of speed from a 4 point (Track) starter stance.  This trains you to start your body to stay low and not be standing straight up when you explode into your burst of speed.  On the days you are not doing your distance running you should do:

  • 10 – 10 yard sprints with 5 seconds between sprints, rest 2 minutes and repeat a total of 5 times
  • 10 – 20 yard sprints with 10 seconds between sprints, rest 2 minutes and repeat a total of 5 times

Remember that a sprint is an all out run, like it was the last 10 (or 20 yards) you were running for the rest of your life.

Get Ready – Strength!

The best possible strength exercise for you at your stage of development is a simple pushup.  HOWEVER, you must do a proper form pushup, anything else is useless.  We would rather have you do 2 proper form pushups than 5 lousy form pushups.  You will build better strength doing the 2 proper form pushups than doing 5 or 10 lousy form pushups.

If you Google (proper form pushup) you will find plenty of videos to show you the proper way to do a pushup.  Here is one video you can use: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eh00_rniF8E .  Your goal should be 20 proper form pushups by the time you report in August.  If you can already do 20 proper form pushups, then add some weight to your back, use a telephone book or your little brother or sister.  Training is all about starting where you are at and improving from there.

Building a strong abdomen is important.  Leg lifts is one way of doing that.  Watch this video for the proper leg lift form: http://www.ehow.co.uk/video_2359306_leg-lift-abdominal-exercises.html .  Your goal should be 20 leg lifts.  Remember that the heels of your foot should be 6 inches from the ground.  Hold this position for the count of 3 before lowering your legs (slowly) to the floor.  For added strength raise your legs from 6 inches to 90 degrees so that the soles of your feet are pointed to the sky.  Then bring them down to 6 inches and then finally to the floor.  Also, when your legs are 6 inches from the floor, spread your legs wide on a 45 degree angle while keeping your heels 6 inches from the floor.  Your goal is 20 leg lifts by the time you report in August.

Train hard, your coaches will be expecting you to report on the first day in shape and ready to practice. Notice:  The Brown Deer Youth Football program is open to students who are Brown Deer residents and to other students who meet the AAYFL league residency requirements, but is not a School District Program.

Adults - Other Ways To Be Involved !!!!

There are many other ways to be involved with Youth Football other than coaching!!!!

  • Be a Team Photographer.  Take action pictures during the game from the sideline.  Upload them to this site. You don't have to be a professional.  With today's digital cameras you would be surprised how easy it is to take the pictures and uploading them is a breeze.  Contact your head coach for more details.  Check out the Photo Alblums Link on the navigator on the left hand side of the screen.
  • Team Managers needed at all levels.  Help the coaches and team out by doing all the little things the coaches have to do if you don't help!!  Handouts each week for the upcoming games and collecting administrative paperwork required during the year.  Ask the coaches what you can do for the team!!
  • Game Statisticians are always needed.  Keep game stats so the team knows how they did each week.  The more statisticians for each team, the better the statistics are.  These are a great help to the coaches and the team each week.  The Head Coach will provide the sheets to help organize the statistics.
  • Chain gangs are always needed for home games.
  • Work the concession stand during the games.  Pick your dates and times to work!!!
  • Be an announcer in the booth!!  Responsible past Youth Football players can be announcers.

Moms, Dads, Aunts, Uncles, Friends and Neighbors - Get involved!!!  Contact Bob Haizel  for more information.  (See About BDYF link on the left side of this page for Bob's contact information).
