Welcome to the Newton Athletic Association (NAA) Home Page
The NAA is a non-profit volunteer-run organization that organizes and administors basketball leagues in Newton for boys who live in Newton or attend school in Newton. Our leagues are for players from the third grade through high school. Weather Alert & School Closing Policy ******Due to the impending storm, the City of Newton has cancelled all evening activities for 2/10/10, so there is no NAA basketball this evening. The games will be rescheduled at a later date.****** In case of bad weather, please check the Parks and Recreation hotline for gym closings: (617) 559-9020. We will post information on the web site as soon as it becomes available. Please note, if school is closed due to either a holiday or bad weather then all practices or games for that particular day are cancelled. Players - Please do not wear your game sneakers in the snow on the way to the gym for either practices or games. It creates a wet and dangerous surface on the basketball court when the snow melts from the grooves in the sneakers. NAA Practices Please note - There will be NO NAA practices for B4, B5, A6, A7 and Pony from February 5th through February 26th due to the weeknight games that are scheduled during this time period. Important Notes: To NAA parents, players and coaches, The NAA board of directors would like to bring several issues to your attention. These involve both safety and etiquette during games at Brown gymnasium. This season, and increasingly during the season, we have seen an increase in behaviors that are disrespectful of the teams, players and the Brown community. Specifically, while games are being played it is expected that non-participants do not interfere with the playing of the games. This is manifested in several behaviors that are inconsiderate: * Not clearing the floor after a game is completed and not permitting the next teams to begin using the courts for their allotted practice time. * Congregating in the area between the two courts. The league has requested that all spectators other than players and coaches watch games from the sides opposite the scoring tables. We have observed many parents and players ignoring this rule and, frankly, objecting when asked to move elsewhere. Please note that the corridor that runs behind the two gyms is the best way to move from one game to another without interfering with play. * Allowing younger childrent to run between and behind the courts. We had a collision between a ref and a young child this past week. Thankfully neither was injured. * Players bringing bottles of water, Gatorade and more to the bench areas on the sideline. Spilled bottles are a common occurence. Players who spill drinks are responsible for cleaning up when the spill occurs. (And, of course, no one ever spills their bottles but loose balls and passing players do knock bottles over.) Parents who escort their children to the gym might consider instructing their children that it is not the responsibility of the league to clean up after players. This is a safety issue as well as a fundamental consideration issue. Generally after a game, the area behind the benches has been treated as if it were a garbage dump. That is unacceptable behavior. (We also point out that the rule and signage outside the gyms indicate that NO food or drinks are allowed in the gym!) Hundreds of players, parents and coaches use the Brown gym on Saturdays and Sundays. We recognize that sometimes games run overtime. We have limited space and a lot going on. It is ALL of our responsibility to act appropriately and with consideration of others at all times. Coaches please give your players guidance. Parents, please instruct and supervise your children. Thanks for you help on these matters. Important Update - Please read the following before registering for C, B4, B5, A6, A7, Pony and Senior Leagues. Effective immediately, registrations for C, B4, B5, A6, A7, Pony and Senior leagues are for the wait list. If you wish to be added to a team on a space available basis, BEFORE registering, please send an email to info@naabasketball.org and provide the player's name and league.
