Click here for the 2011-12 Regular Season Practice Schedule

Please note: There will be no B4, B5, A6 or A7 practices on the following dates: 2/14 - 2/16, 3/1

Game Schedules have been posted for all leagues under "Schedules" and in pdf form under "Handouts."

Bad Weather Policy

In case of bad weather, please check the Parks and Recreation hotline for gym closings: (617) 559-9020. We will post information on the web site as soon as it becomes available. Please note, if school is closed due to either a holiday or bad weather then all practices or games for that particular day are cancelled.

Players - Also, please do not wear your game sneakers in the snow on the way to the gym for either practices or games. It creates a wet and dangerous surface on the basketball court when the snow melts from the grooves in the sneakers.

Registration Information

Please Note - Registration for C, B4, B5, A6, A7 and Pony is now closed.

Senior League - 10th, 11th and 12th grades

This is a reminder to register (registration link is listed above) for NAA Basketball Senior League this week.

The NAA Senior League is a great chance to play in an organized competitive league where everyone gets a chance to play and contribute to their team and enjoy the game.

NAA Senior League is for players in the 10th, 11th and 12th Grades. The Senior League is not open to Varsity or JV players. The season goes from January to March and consists of 8 to 10 games followed by a playoff tournament for all teams. Teams do not have weekly practices and games are held on Sundays from about 4PM to 8PM at Bigelow Middle School, with occasional weeknight games. We use standard high school rules with 3 point shots.

We often receive requests from players to be on the same team. You may request to be on the same team with up to 4 other players, but only if the groupings do not create unbalanced teams. In order to be considered for placement on the same team, all players involved in a request must be registered and attend one of the two Senior League evaluation sessions (Sunday December 18 from 2:30 to 4PM and Monday December 19 from9:00 PM to 9:45 PM). Both sessions are at Brown Middle School.

Encourage your friends to register this week and come to one of the evaluation sessions. Every year, some players wait to register until after the teams are created when it is difficult to find space for everyone. It is important to register this week because we want to start playing on the first weekend after Winter Vacation.

DON’T FORGET TO REGISTER THIS WEEK and REMIND YOUR FRIENDS!

If you have any questions, please send me an email at dstolper@verizon.net

David Stolper, NAA Senior League

P.S. We always need coaches. Parents, siblings and friends are all welcome to be coaches. Please volunteer.

Gym Safety

To NAA parents, players and coaches,

(The following is a reprise of a message sent out last year during the season when it was evident we had a problem. By sending it before the first game we hope to get off to a better start.)

As we start the basketball season, the NAA board of directors would like to bring several issues to your attention. These involve both safety and etiquette during games at Brown gymnasium.

This season, NAA has over 500 kids participating in the B4 through the Pony League program which corresponds to 51 teams. As a result the Brown gym will be very busy on both Saturdays and Sundays which will be exciting but also hectic and at times overwhelming. To insure a fun and safe environment it is important that all participants act respectful to each other, the refs, coaches and the Brown community. Also, while games are being played it is expected that non-participants will not interfere with the playing of the games. Please do your part by following the rules below:

* At the conclusion of games please clear the playing floor as quick as possible to permit the next team their allotted warm-up/practice time before their scheduled game.

* Please do not congregate in the area between the two courts. The league has requested that all spectators other than players, coaches (who are currently involved in a game) and league administrators watch games from the sides opposite the scoring tables. In the past, we have observed many parents and players ignoring this rule and, frankly, objecting when asked to move elsewhere. Please note that the corridor that runs behind the two gyms is the best way to move from one game to another without interfering with play.

* Please do not allow younger children to run between and behind the courts. Last year, we had a bad collision between a ref and a young child. Thankfully neither was injured.

* Players are responsible for any beverages they bring to the bench areas on the sideline. Spilled bottles are a common occurrence. Players who spill drinks are responsible for cleaning up when the spill occurs. (And, of course, no one ever spills their bottles but loose balls and passing players do knock bottles over.) Parents who escort their children to the gym might consider instructing their children that it is not the responsibility of the league to clean up after players. This is a safety issue as well as a fundamental consideration issue. In the past, after many games, the area behind the benches has been treated as if it were a garbage dump. That is unacceptable behavior. (We also point out that the rule and signage outside the gyms indicate that NO food or drinks are allowed in the gym!)

Hundreds of players, parents and coaches use the Brown gym on Saturdays and Sundays. We recognize that sometimes games run overtime. We have limited space and a lot going on. It is ALL of our responsibility to act appropriately and with consideration of others at all times. Coaches please give your players guidance. Parents, please instruct and supervise your children.

Thanks for your help on these matters.   NAA Board of Directors.

2011-12 Basketball Registration

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the 2011-12 season of the NAA Basketball Program. We look forward to working with you and your children during the coming year.

Our leagues are for players from the third grade through high school. The league is generally considered a boys league but girls are welcome to play. The league is open to all players regardless of ability or experience.

Two years ago we were pleased to announce our partnership with Newton Community Education (NCE).   NCE will continue to manage, administer and promote the program while the basketball operations will be run by the NAA Board and volunteers.

At the top of this letter there is a link to the on-line registration forms On-line registration is managed by Active.com an affiliate of eTeamz.  NAA is in the fifth season of using an online registration process. The goal is to have 100% online participation for accuracy and efficiency so PLEASE try to register online if at all possible.  If you cannot register online please send an email to info@naabasketball.org and we will provide you with a registration instructions.

If any of our leagues are oversubscribed, we will give priority to the date on which registrations are completed. If your child is not assigned to a team, your registration fee will be refunded otherwise no refunds will be issued. The league does provide scholarships. To request a scholarship, please send your request to info@naabasketball.org.  All requests are confidential to the league adminstration.

Fees this year have been lowered from last year.  The registration fee is $120.00 per child ($80.00 per each additional child in the same family if registered at the same time.)  Late registrations are $140 per child.
