Fitzgerald Field History
Every small town has a gathering place. For Benicia, it always has been a ballpark.
Through several decades stretching back even before March 15, 1945 when the City Council agreed to purchase the land for the town's ballpark, this parcel of earth has been the focal point for Benicia's passion - Baseball.
What would become Fitzgerald Field started out as a sandlot that featured semipro and club teams dating back to the early 1900's.
Mike Fitzgerald was a City Councilman who OK'd the purchase for the field. Fitzgerald served on the City Council from 1944-56 and was Mayor from 1948-52. He became Postmaster in 1961 and served with community
organizations like Boy Scouts and Kiwanis. Two weeks after his death Jan 2, 1973, the city voted to name the park in his memory. Today the Fitz has hosted some great games such as High School Championships, State Babe Ruth Championships, Senior League, AAU, Legion, and many other tournaments.
