Running a V Cut
A V cut is a simple way to move without the ball to get open. It may be a small V cut such as one step or it may be a large V cut 5 steps one way then cutting in another direction. The big thing is to get the defense going one way and you go the other. When running a larger V cut make sure the player plants his foot and cuts quickly in the other direction. Young players tend to turn the V cut into a C cut. If you don't make a sharp corner when you cut the defense will be able to follow you.

Make it Fun!
When setting up your practice you have to do drills that will teach the players the basketball skills they will need and make it fun for the players. Of course the players will not find every drill exciting to do. I try to follow up any difficult drill with a drill they enjoy. Such as a shooting drill. Also keep your drills short. Don't spend half your practice on one drill. Remember the attention span of your players is not going to be to long. When explaining a new drill or offence keep it short. The best way to introduce a new offense is to break it up into small parts. Show them a part of the offense and then have them run it. Then keep adding until they have the whole offense. I've seen coaches go into their Bobby Knight routine. They will talk for twenty minutes about a new offense. Well five minutes into their talk they have lost the attention of the players.
The main thing is to be positive with the kids. Try to say 3 good thing about a player for every bad thing you correct. It's easier than you think. When they are working a shooting drill just reaching out and giving them five after their turn is sending the signal you think they are doing well. Remember a negative comment from you that you will forget about in five minutes, may stay in that kids mind for a long time. You ARE A ROLE MODEL!. The players look up to you. It's not how many game you win or lose that counts. It's how many of your players had fun, learned something and will return next year.

Check List
It is surprising how many coaches will just work on offense and skip over working on the basic skills needed to play the game. If a player cannot dribble a ball with his head up he cannot run an offense. A practice is for practicing basketball skills. A game is an award for practicing. You can run a good practice and still make it fun for the players. Below is a list of skills, rules and terms your players should know by the end of the season. Even players 7 and and 8 years of age can and will learn this. Remember be positive with the kids. Be organized! Know what you are going to do before you start practice. And be a good sport. Lead by example.   

Dribble with their left and right hand, with their head up.
Bounce pass
Chest pass
Tipple threat position
How to shoot the ball with a proper form.
How to box out
How to rebound
How to run a V cut
How to run a back door
How to run a give N go
How to set a pick
How to pick & roll
What is a good defensive stance.

What is week side and what is strong side.
What are the blocks
What is the lane and how long can you be in it.
What is the base line
How long do you have to get across the half court line
How long do you have to get the ball in bounds

Players who have had me for a coach will tell you we hardly ever scrimmage at practice. To me a practice is for practicing and a game is an award for practicing. To work on the offense I will put our player into position and start the offense. We stop play and correct what was wrong and also point out the good things. By running the practice this way we can make sure the players are in the proper positions to start and it it is much easier to point out mistakes. Try to make the corrections in a positive tone. Don't make your players afraid to make mistakes. I often tell the players to go out and give it a 100 percent. If you are going to make a mistake, make it a good one. Often the fastest way for a player to learn something is for him to do it wrong and learn from his mistake. Anyway back to scrimmaging. I only scrimmage 2 or 3 times a year. And only the last part of a practice. This I may do for an award to the team for practicing hard. And at that it will be a controlled practice. Stopping to get the players back into the proper positions.

Whats Your Record?
Your win / loss record is not important. It's how many of your players learned something, had fun and will return next year.

Practice #1
Here is an outline you can use at your first basketball practice. It will keep you organized and help your practice run smoothly.

1. Have a quick talk with the players, introduce yourself and any assistant coaches. Go over any ground rules such as no talking when a coach is talking. Keep it short no more than 5 minutes

2. DRIBBLE PRACTICE. 3 Lines on the base line. Have them dribble the length of the court right handed and back left handed. Stand on the court, have the players call out how many fingers you hold up as the dribble down the court.

Have them dibble to the end of the court and sit down on the ground & get back up without loosing their dribble. (butt must hit the ground ) Still right hand down left hand back.

Have them switch hands every two dribbles there and back. Dribble practice 10 minutes

3. Hands get all the players in a half circle so they can see you. Show the player the HANDS POSITION. Feet shoulder length apart, shooting foot slightly forward. Shooting hands behind the ball, elbow in, and balance hand on the side of the ball. Knees are slightly bent. Eyes on the hands at all times! Have each player pretend to have a basketball and bounce it catching it in the hands position.
Have each player bounce a basketball and catch it in the hands position. 10 minutes

BOUNCE / CHEST PASS. Pair up the player facing each other about 10 feet apart. Show the proper way to bounce pass. Make sure they step with the pass and use both hands. have them push the ball out not down. After the pass their arms should be extended and thumbs down. The ball should bounce up to the teammates chest.

Chest pass is the same except the ball is passes without it hitting the floor. Step with the pass, arms extended and thumbs down   Passing drills ten minutes.

POWER POSITION Have the players get into the hands position. Show them the power position from there. Bring the ball up to the cheek area. Shooting hand under the ball and balance hand on the side of the ball. Eyes still on the ball! ( Make sure they do not get the balance hand behind the ball). As they bring the ball up they should bend the knees to a 120 degree angle. Make sure they keep their weight above their feet.   5 minutes


SHOT POSITION From the power positions the player straightens his arms pushing the ball up, at the same time he straitens his legs. He should end up on his toe's with his arms extended toward the basket. Keep the head level , look up with the eyes. 5 minutes

Set up two lines, one at each corner of the foul shot line. Have each player step up and as you call out hands, power , shot they go thought the positions and shoot the ball. Keep the shot short. Be more concerned about the form and not making the basket at this time. 10 minutes

DEFENSE have the players spread out facing you. Go over the defensive stance. Feet shoulder length apart, knees bent. butt down weight on the front of your feet and hands up. go over sliding ( feet never hit together ). How to charge and retreat. Teach the players if coach says BANG they drop into their stance. ( There have been times in a game that all I said was BANG and all 5 player went into their stance). This also come into play for the next drill. 5 minutes

COACHES SAYS Keep the player spread out and facing you. This is just like Simon says only it's coaches says and we work on defense. You say Coach says BANG and all the kids go into their stance. Coach says slide this way and point and they should side in their stance until you stop them. ( Make sure they are not hopping when they slide). You can have them slide each direction, charge , retreat, and jump. After a while I also put in jump, triple threat position, hands, power, shot and any thing else I come up with. This is a favorite drill of the kids. 10 minutes

Finish up with some free time for shooting. All shots must be 15 feet or less. Walk around watching the players shot. It's a good time to correct problems.

Triple Threat - Give & Go
An easy way to show you players the triple threat position is to have them get into the Hands Position. Now just have them pull their shooting arm's elbow back until the ball is in the pocket. Have the players take turns catching a ball squaring to the basket in the triple threat position.
Have the player get into two lines. One on top like a guard and one at a forward position. Have the guard pass to the forward. The forward catches the ball squares to the basket in the triple threat position. Then have the guard break to the basket and receive a pass for a lay up. Now you have them working on passing, triple threat position, lay-ups and the give & go.

Basic Basketball Practice Outline
Here is a copy of a basic basketball practice outline. Practice works much more smoothly if you know what you are going to do before you start practice.                                                                                          

Hands, Power, Shot   10 min
•        Proper footing.
•        Knees slightly bent
•        Look at your hands.
•        Shooting hand behind the ball
•        Balance hand on the SIDE of the ball

3 Dribble Step Step Shot 10 min
•        Break into groups
•        2 lines
•        left line dribbles 3 times with left hand
•        steps with left foot first
•        feet in proper shooting stance
•        hands, power, shot.

Dribbling Practice Confusion layups 10 min (see drills page for more info)
•        line up 3 lines so the cross
•        dribble down court right handed
•        dribble back left-handed.
•        Not a race
•        Head up, ball no higher than the waist.

Break 5 min

Stationary Dribble 10 min
•        Players spread out facing coach , each with a ball
•        Have them in the ready position for dribbling
•        Seats down, back straight, Heads up
•        Strong hand protecting the ball
•        Yell Change, They should switch hands

Triple Threat   Give & Go 15 MIN
Go over triple threat position.
•        HANDS
•        Break into groups
•        Pass ball to player have them square to basket, triple threat position
•        2 lines give & go       ( bounce pass )

Break 5 min

3 Dribble Step Step Shot 10 min
•        Break into groups
•        2 lines
•        left line dribbles 3 times with left hand
•        steps with left foot first
•        feet in proper shooting stance
•        hands, power, shot.

Coaches Says 10 min
•        Go over defensive stance
•        How to slide, back peddle, charge
•        Slap floor
•        Bang
