Good advise in both clips.
The part about walking toward the base is good advise. It gives everyone the perception that the step was directly toward the base.
It's no different than an umpire taking a couple of steps toward the base after making a call. It gives everyone the perception that he was closer to the play than he really was.

Maybe advice wasn't the correct phrase... his demonstration of how he suggests the step towards 3rd should be.
He's still stepping towards home. How could that NOT be a balk? Is he hopping no one will notice that?

He's stepping MORE towards 3rd than towards home (look at the 45-degree line he drew in the dirt). If a LHP can do the same more to 1st then a RHP can do that move to 3rd. You just don't see it that often is all, and stepping on the pitching rubber-side of the 45-degree line is the key.

STL,
Actually, I think he's not. If you look closely at the video, there's a line drawn in the dirt on the mound. I assume that one side of the line is more toward 3B and one side is more toward home. He's being very careful to place his foot on the 3B side of that line.
Again, I think he's teaching the right thing, but when he tries to explain things, it's clear that he doesn't know the rules.

I wouldnt call it perfectly legal according to the intent of the rule, but it is the same motion a lefty pitcher uses to first base. If not called on the Lefty , cant be called on the righty. Don

Mason,
I know coaches always try to get an edge, no matter how small it is. But walking toward third to influence the umpire? Like the umpire only thinks to look at the pitcher when the base coach says "balk?" I don't think so.

Re: More dubious advice Part 2

Of course, the umpires are watching him the whole time. I certainly didn't infer that they weren't. However, "Perception is reality!"
If the pitcher can give the perception that he stepped more toward third than home, he has a better chance of not getting balked. That's the purpose of walking toward the base.
Again, it's no different than when we, as umpires, take a couple of steps closer to the base after making a close call. It gives everyone the perception that we was closer to then base than we really was. Those couple of steps could be the difference between catching grief or not.
