OBR.

There are at least 9 rule paragraphs, sub-paragraphs, notes, or interpretations where a Strike can be added to a batter's count.

Can any of your rookie umps names them?

Does my <300 posts vs your 7K qualify me as a rookie? If yes, I've got all 9 waiting in the wings.

I believe Mike thinks a significant number of MLU's are "rookies", so you should be fine

Still, I don't want to take a swing at it just yet since I think it is an easy question. But regardless, there would be some that may pick nits with my answers. I will wait.

And I guess anyone that answers would be branded a "rookie", right? I've only been blue for 8 years, still a newbie compared to Beowulf. I hear he is older than time itself. (C'mon Frank! and OHB, Leave this one alone)

BB:

The question was directed at (rookie) umpires. I'm not an umpire....rookie or otherwise. [Not to say I don't know the answer]

Mike has given you the invite to answer; recognizing you as a "rookie" umpire.

Frank!

Re: Quiz for the rookies out there!
I'm wondering that the question was lame to begin with, hence no interest in answering it. But since I had an accident with my motorcycle the other day, and since I "came up lame", I will attempt my answer (That and the fact that no one else seems interested before me):

1.        Swings at a pitched ball and fails to hit it.
2.        Fails to swing at a pitched ball which is called a strike. (called strike, strike looking)
3.        Hits a pitched ball into foul territory when there are fewer than two strikes in the at-bat.
4.        Bunts a pitched ball into foul territory. These count as a foul strike regardless of the number of strikes already charged to the batter.
5.        Attempts to bunt a pitched ball and fails to hit it. This counts as a swing and miss.
6.        Touches a pitched ball while striking at it with the bat.
7.        Touches a pitched ball while it is in the strike zone. (Intentional touching of a pitched ball is not allowed.)
8.        Hits a foul tip; which goes directly to the catcher's glove and is caught.
9.        Refuses to enter the batter's box when ordered to do so by the umpire, and a directed pitch is thrown by the pitcher.

Re: Quiz for the rookies out there!
Swing and a miss & a bunt offer missed would pretty much be the same thing (as mentioned).

Add 2 more:
Checked swing that is reversed for a strike...

Delay of game - I've observed umpires calling a strike on a batter who is still in the dugout, taking too long to get to the plate, especially at the beginning of an inning (a strike was called without a pitch)...

Also, I have no qualms about letting you know I've got only 4 years under my belt (I'm not sure that qualifies as a rookie though; maybe, still "new"...

Re: Quiz for the rookies out there!
Just finished jogging with more thoughts running through my head, and I remembered this one...

Also, a strike (without a pitch) can be called on a batter who steps with both feet outside the box without Time being called if F1 is in contact with the rubber. If F1 pitches the ball and it's a strike, then that's two strikes on the batter...

This is the rule in Fed; I think it's the rule in NCAA; I'm not sure about OBR, but I think so...

Beak:

Pretty good, but 1 and 5 are judged under the same rule.

There is still one more!

Same as #1

Not sure what rule set that the question was directed (Mike_CVUA?), but delay of game is not applicable IMO, to call a strike witout a pitch.

MCVUA: There is still one more!

I thought you said there was AT LEAST 9, and not only limited to 9?

Beak:

Actually, your listing of a strike because a batter "refuses to take his position in the batters box after being directed to do so" is one that people usually forget. Good on ya!

It is NOT a "Delay of Game". It is a "Directed Strike" because the batter is not cooperating. A subtle semantic difference, but the penalty for "delay of game" is ejection of the manager and then forfeit. And certainly it is not a strike! :-) It used to be that the umpire would instruct the pitcher: "Pitcher, pitch the ball!" A strike would then be added to the count; but if the batter got into the box before the pitch, the umpire would rule on the merits of the pitch. But now, you just ring one up. (I think that rule changed in the last 2 or 3 years.)

OK, here is answer #9:

Sitch: R3 tries to steal home and is hit by the pitch that was judged in the strike zone. A strike is awarded to the batter, and the run scores. BUT, if it was strike 3 with 2 outs, the run does not score because the batter was retired for the 3rd out.

Those are the 9. Clearly, in LL 60' there are only 8.

Cheers!

Mike CVUA
