  Detached Equipment
I'm reposting this question again. I replied to a 2001 post about detached equipment, but unless you sort the threads by last reply, you won't see that.

This happened in a game today. FED rules. R1 on third. Batter pops up a bunt attempt. Ball heads to backstop. Catcher takes off mask and holds onto it. He lunges at the ball and tries to swat it with his mask. Ball had 0 chance of going fair. Umpire awards R1 1 base. At bat continues. Is this right? From the 2001 discussion, it seems like the ball has to have a chance of going fair and in that case the award is 3 bases for the batter.

The umpire made a point of saying this happened in a MLB game this year with Posada scooping up a ball in the dirt with his mask. That seems to be a different situation (pitched ball vs batted ball). If the same thing happened in FED, is there a 1 base award?

1) Batted ball: If it's a foul fly, in FED the offense gets the choice of a foul ball or the result of the play (in the case where the ball is caught and runners advance, for example).

2) Pitched ball: 2 bases in FED.

Thanks. Do you happen to know the FED rule numbers for these?
