DH Rule
|
Under FED rules, pitcher is being DH'd for. Later in the game, pitcher is replaced by substitute pitcher coming off the bench and starting pitcher goes to the bench.
Now, coach wants to re-enter starting pitcher in a non-pitching defensive position say F3. How does one make this reentry? Are there more than one way to do it?
Thanks.

The starting pitcher must re-enter in the same spot in the line-up. So, the substitute F1 will have to come out of the game. The DH can still hit.

Re: DH Rule

I'm not understanding your answer. The starting pitcher was not in the lineup...he was being DH'd for. So when you say he needs to reenter in the same spot...same as who?
My understanding is that the starting pitcher is tied to the DH. So, in order to reenter the starting pitcher, he would have to bat for the DH. In other words the DH and the starting pitcher (or anyone else that he DH's for, in this case the sub pitcher as well) are all tied to one spot in the lineup under FED but not OBR. I'm asking about FED here.
Perhaps there is another option here that I'm missing but you say the DH can still hit. How does that happen?
Thanks.

Re: DH Rule
|
I hope I can explain this - here goes:
The DH is not batting "for the pitcher" under FED rules. He is the DH for that position in the batting order. The player being DH-ed for and any sub are tied to the same spot in the order as the DH even if they are not batting. If the DH is batting in the #4 spot, the player he is hitting for is also tied to the #4 spot. If the player who is being DH-ed for bats, he must bat in the #4 spot in place of the DH. The DH and the player he is DH-ing for cannot both be in the batting order at the same time.
Adam - starting pitcher
Baker - DH
Charles - Sub for Adam
Adam leaves the game and Charles enters. Baker continues as DH.
Coach now wants to re-enter Adam defensively. To do so, Charles must leave the game. Adam and Charles cannot be in the game at the same time.
Baker can continue in the game as the DH for Adam. If Adam were to bat, he would do so in the DH's spot and the position of DH would be done for the day.

Thanks Delawareblue. The light has gone on and I understand exactly what you are saying. I hope my comments didn't confuse the issue. My state (CT) doesn't play the DH rule in high school so just trying to learn it well for summer ball.

Re: DH Rule

Just a follow up on this substituting...
So, in this given scenario, when the original pitcher re-enters in the F3 position with the DH still in effect, the sub F1 leaves the game and a new F1 comes in and now bats in the removed F3's batting spot?
